Guest ronthai Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 First timer, be sure what you are getting in to. After the first time you will want to come back over and over again. As some posters here already mentioned, forget the whole Bangkok thing, especially since you are on a budget. Pattaya is so much nicer (my opinion) and CHEAPER then Bangkok and has a nice large gay beach. Plenty of bars mostly located in 3 area's. BoysTown also called Pattayaland, mostly for tourists and a bit pricy (like Bangkok), then you have Sunee Plaza - an area with different kind of bars with prices for a beer ranging from 60-120 baht where the 120 is in the GoGoBars and the cheaper are in the "normal" bars, then there is the Jomtien Complex (beach area, not on the beach and more a daytime place to drink) with several nice bars, but not as lively as Sunee Plaza at night time. In Pattaya there a many, many places where you can stay for about 400-600 Baht a day, but since you are new a recommend View Talay 1 on Thappraya Road. Go to the entrance of the first building 1A on on the left you see a girly bar, owner name is Na. See has many rooms available for 500-600 baht or 3000 ($100) weekly. Nice and clean with air, refrige and basic kitchen (nice for coffee or breakfast) The whole View Talay 1 Complex has about 10 bars, 4 laundries, 5 restaurants, mini market downstairs. The area and people are gay friendly as many gays stay there. For the rest enjoy and if you need additional info or have questions, PM me. PS the gay beach area in Jomtien Pattaya http://www.gaythailand.com/forums/topic/7624-dongtan-beach-photos/ Quote
Guest ronthai Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Forgot to tell you that from and to the airport - Pattaya there is a bus service for only 124 baht and arrives and leaves at View Talay 1 http://www.airportpattayabus.com/ Quote
kokopelli Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Thanks. I think i really should pay a visit to Pattaya. But i am not a big fan of ladyboy. Is there any nice.quiet bars near the beach.? And how about the hotels.? would be too expensive this time of year.? Yes, many quiet bars and otherwise near the beach including massage house and host bar(boys) and lots of restaurants. Just no go-go bars but it is only a short ride to Sunee or Boyztown. To get to airport you can take a bus but a taxi/rental is not that expensive. 1200 Baht = $40 USD. Don't know about hotels but for only one week why worry? Quote
Guest Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 THE beach people refer to in this thread is Dongtan Beach Jomtien, where the gay section is. There is of course a beach 2 minutes walk from Boystown, however that's going to be occupied by mainly straight tourists. Now if you want to stay near the gay beach, check the Jomtien hotels here: http://www.nickysgaypattaya.com/gay-pattaya/jomtien/hotel-j/ DD Inn is cheap. I have never stayed there & it does look rather basic. I don't recall seeing many ladyboys on the gay beach, but I don't exactly go looking for them either. Perhaps you may need to "off" one long time or hook up with one on Gayromeo. Quote

Guest snapshot Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 Augieeee... if you want to spend your holiday paying prostitutes for sex and renting their friendship and company then by all means, Pattaya is the place to go. You can't do better. Otherwise, forget Pattaya... Pattaya is basically 95% prostitution. The gay scene in Pattaya is so heavily dominated by prostitution that it actually makes it more challenging to genuinely meet other gay guys who aren't moneyboys. The only key advantages Pattaya offers is it's close to Bangkok and it's a little bit cheaper. Unless you're after prostitutes, you're better off paying a little more and going to a place that actually has what you want. -- I would suggest spending a few days in Bangkok first... if you're on a budget and want to see the sights, go see the Grand Palace and all that. Go shopping at Chatuchak. It's cheap, interesting to explore and it's the biggest weekend market in the world. Check out MBK and some of other big malls. Go explore Chinatown. Go see the river. Check out one of the Sky Bars (e.g. Lebua - it's expensive but spectacular). Go see Kao San Rd (backpacker district). At night, go check out one of the gogo bar shows, which are fairly unique to Thailand. Not the sort of thing you'll be able to see in most other countries. If you want to meet local gay guys, the easiest place for you is probably a nightclub called DJ Station - in Silom next to Saladaeng BTS Skytrain Station). It's fairly friendly to foreigners. Busy every night of the week (packed on weekends). Gets going around 11-12 midnight. Thai guys are really friendly and easy to chat up. Be aware there's moneyboys (prostitutes) here but they mainly hang out on the second and third levels so they're easy to avoid if you want (and if you're too shy or having trouble meeting someone you might go up there in desperation hahaha). There are plenty of other gay bars and nightclubs local gays go to but this is the easiest to start with. You can also try some of the saunas. Best to go during non-business hours like evening and weekends... or else you'll only see holidaying foreigners there. You can get cheap accommodation all over Bangkok but if you're keen to meet other travelers, consider staying in Kao San Rd... the backpacker district. Really easy to meet other people around here as everyone is friendly and the Thais are used to transient foreigners. It's a long way to travel to Silom though... maybe 45 minutes. -- As for beaches, beer on the beach etc... thailand is awesome for that. You COULD do that in Pattaya but the beaches there are crap and options limited. The only "beach bars" I know, which are worthwhile for drinking on the beach are a few bars behind Dong Tan Beach (view to beach obscured by trees). You can drink on the beach though (people serve beers to you on the beach). I think you're better off going to Phuket, Samui, Krabi or one of the other tropical beach islands with tourists... Phuket and Samui have some gay bars and gay gogo bars. To give you a more accurate picture of some of the places mentioned in Pattaya... Plenty of bars mostly ain 3 area's.BoysTown also called Pattayaland, mostly for tourists and a bit pricy (like Bangkok), Almost 100% prositution... most if not all the bars here are gogo bars selling boy prostitutes. Sunee Plaza - an area with different kind of bars with prices for a beer ranging from 60-120 baht where the 120 is in the GoGoBars and the cheaper are in the "normal" bars Again... mostly prostitute bars. I would be surprised if there was a single bar here not offering prostitutes. It's basically a cheaper and simpler version of Boyztown... e.g. many of the bars here are open air and don't have air conditioning. Quite a sleazy place too. Jomtien Complex (beach area, not on the beach and more a daytime place to drink) with several nice bars, but not as lively as Sunee Plaza at night time. Less of a focus on prostitution in these bars but still dominated by it. -- So yeah... Augieee, there's nothing wrong with it if that's what you're after. I just didn't want to assume you're there to meet commercial gay guys (moneyboys/prostitutes) and visit gay gogo bars... I dislike people who just automatically assume a gay traveler visiting Thailand is there for that and isn't interested in genuine encounters. The gay scene in Thailand is divided into the commercial sex/prostitution side and the normal, genuine side. Don't be fooled into thinking there's only a commercial sex gay scene there, just because that topic dominates some forums like this. The normal gay scene there is awesome... Thai guys are really friendly and welcoming - probably the most approachable and easy to meet of all the Asian nationalities. They're also really good looking and very charming! Great fun to hang out with. Have fun! Quote
Bob Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 Um......Khun Augieeee has already landed in the Land of Smiles and my guess is he'll give us a report in a week or two as to how much fun he had. Hopefully, he ignored most of our advice and just went and did what he felt like doing at the given moment. Quote
Guest thaiworthy Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 Hopefully, he ignored most of our advice and just went and did what he felt like doing at the given moment. Boy, you can say that again! But he did ask for advice and he certainly got it. No one really knows what the (gay) traveler is really looking for or will admit to on a message board, but-- like Bob, I hope we find out! Quote
Guest Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 I just didn't want to assume you're there to meet commercial gay guys (moneyboys/prostitutes) and visit gay gogo bars..For many 22 year old travellers, I would assume they neither have the need nor the finances to go around paying prostitutes. However, if in Thailand, at least one visit to a gogo bar is recommended. When in Rome..... I'm looking forward to hearing how the trip went. Quote

Um......Khun Augieeee has already landed in the Land of Smiles and my guess is he'll give us a report in a week or two as to how much fun he had. Thanks for sharing, RonThai. I am glad he had a great time. I was hoping to hear from him personally on this thread. Like Bob, and perhaps a few others, it would be nice for a little report, or a few more details at least. If news of returning to school is all we can ever hope to know as a result of his very first trip to Thailand, it would be a great disappointment. Pardon my impertinence, but this thread has had 37 replies and 927 views. It's a little like being left high and dry after the ship has sailed. It would be nice if he'd chime in soon. Quote
Bob Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 I'd guess he'll make a few comments about his trip once things get back in order - or at least I hope so. If I remember my first trip over here, it took me a good week after the trip to get any of my thoughts in order (not to mention get rid of the jet lag I had). Quote
Guest augieeee Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 Sorry guys.!! I didn't know you guys have keep replying on this thread until about two days ago. Because when i get a new PM for this website it will show in my mail box. That's why i've been replying to some of the members here. Since I had left more than a week. It took me 2 days to catch up some stuff. And even though i don't have the jet lag problem coz China is only one hour ahead of Thailand. but i do try to get my thoughts in order like Bob said..(damn..i still can't believe i am back in China now..) I am so sorry. and thank you so much for all of you guys. I won't had such a great time in Thailand without all these info. Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 I can remember after my first visit, my head was so crammed with information (much of it totally new to me!) that it took some time to put it all into any kind of perspective. I think the reason some posters are interested in your experiences is that most of us are, shall we say, a lot older than you and have been around in Thailand for a long time - either as residents or frequent visitors. It really will be interesting to know what you enjoyed and what you did not. This will be a lot of help when - hopefully - more younger readers ask for advice in the future. Quote

I went to Khao San Road. The Grand Palace.Wat Arun.Silom Area.weekend market.Pattaya..and lots of places I can't recall how to spell it in English. I did meet some Thai girls..they seems to mistake me as Thai coz of my skin color..i guess.. But i did meet a really nice guy in DJ station the second night of my trip.. Quote

Probably remind you of those beautiful memories that you had. And speak from experience..I strongly recommend to bring a GPS phone for those who want to travel alone also not really good at map like me.. I had been lost for several times in BKK..So it been very helpful to me.. Quote
Rogie Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 I had been lost for several times in BKK.. Being light years behind the times, to me a GPS phone must be a wonder to behold. Whether you find your bearings by good old-fashioned map or the new-fangled GPS here's a reminder getting genuinely lost is not without its dangers. Bangkok is a safe city but certain parts are possibly best avoided. I don't know Bangkok well enough to know which parts might come into that category - one hears of places which are AYOR (at your own risk) such as certain cruising areas - although a mugging is probably the worst that could happen to you. Guest fountainhall Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 I strongly recommend to bring a GPS phone for those who want to travel alone also not really good at map like me SInce so many people in Thailand seem unable to read maps, I think this is an excellent suggestion. they seems to mistake me as Thai coz of my skin color This is quite common. I have several times had Chinese and Japanese friends staying who were frequently addressed in Thai as though they were Thais! Quote

Guest Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 I have several times had Chinese and Japanese friends staying who were frequently addressed in Thai as though they were Thais! I was once approached by one of those unwelcome salespeople who walk the streets of Phuket: Pushy sales man (trying to shake my hand): "Hello my friend, do you speak English?" Z909 (white, caucasian, switching to German): Nein! Pushy sales man (in Japanese): Nihongo wo hanashimasuka? Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 I was once approached by . . . Almost on topic! On my first visit to Penang in 1980, after a a lovely afternoon wandering through Georgetown, I happened upon the Hong Kong Bar. A couple of beers later, just outside the bar an Indian gentleman approached me as I started to make my way to my hotel. "Where are you going, sir?" "To my hotel." "You wanna girl?" he asked conspiratorially. "No, thanks", said I, someone taken aback! "You wanna boy?" "No thanks" "Why not, sir? It's almost 7:00 pm, sir. It's penis time, sir!" Quote
Guest Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Almost on topic! Augiee has received his help & been on his holiday, so the original purpose of the topic has been served. Of course, it would be nice to hear more about that trip. Quote
