Guest Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 Welcome to the board. For the gay scene, the following site is normally good, however this evening there is a technical issue with the BKK guide. I guess they may fix that. If you stay at a gay hotel, they will probably have the Out in Thailand booklet, complete with excellent maps. http://www.out-in-thailand.com/gay-guide-to/bangkok/ However, you should go to see the night life around the Silom gay area. Gay bars, gogo bars & "massage places". Try them all. The Babylon sauna is very popular if that's your thing. For tourism, why not consult LP or the usual tourist guides? Of course I recommend visiting the Royal Palace, some of the wats, taking a boat trip along the river & also one down one of the smaller klongs. Take a ride on a Tuk Tuk, even if it's only once. Walk around China town, Silom etc Also what interests you? Members can probably advice on specific topics. Quote
Bob Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 While I join in welcoming you to the board, you're asking the impossible when you don't give us any indication of your interests or desires. First, how long are you going to be in Thailand? Do you have any interests in visiting boybars? Are you interested in cultural things (such as visiting the Grand Palace or other unique things in Thailand)? Do you want to see other parts of Thailand (rural areas, shopping centers, nice beaches)? Etc. Give us a clue as to what you're looking for or interested in and maybe some of us can make a few suggestions. As an added note, the first time I came to Thailand in the late 90's, although I did have a few ideas of what I could do and where I could go, all I had was a round-trip ticket and no other fixed plans or reservations. I had a great time. Quote
Guest anonone Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 As this is your first time abroad, I would start even more basic. Again, without knowing any background information...not sure how much you know. You will need a passport, possibly an entry visa (not the credit card...a government document) depending on your nationality and how long you will be in country, a way to access funds (ATM card, etc). If you provide more detail, we can provide more help. I am not really sure what info you need. There are some great websites full of information just waiting to be googled. I would suggest reading up a bit and then you might have some specific questions..... Quote

The Silom gay area sounds great. but is there any hotels with lower price around that area..? i checked the website you gave me. hotels are nice but kinda expensive for me. i am just a student who couldn't afford that.. Jan.26 - Feb.2 2.Of course i have interests in visiting boybars..and meet some gay friends.. 3.Yes.i would like to pay a visit to The Grand Palace and The Temple of Dawn. 4.I think i should just skin the shopping centers part. however. i had heard that Chatuchak Weekend Market is kinda famous.right? And i love beach and nice beach bars.sitting on mats on the sand, listening to the waves especially at night. drinking cold beers or whatever.chatting with friends with music playing on the background(or live music).that would be perfect for me.. (maybe i should stay in some island or somewhere near the beach.??) I also want to go diving but no sure if i have enough time. Thanks Bob, but i am sure you had a good time because you have great personality..on the other hand. i kinda quiet and awkward around people..don't get me wrong .i love to meet new friends. but somehow i just don't know how to act.. Bob Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Thanks Bob, but i am sure you had a good time because you have great personality..on the other hand. i kinda quiet and awkward around people..don't get me wrong .i love to meet new friends. but somehow i just don't know how to act.. Lol (as to the "great personality" part - there are people that know me better than that). Seriously, the whole key is your attitude....just go, expect to have some fun, and you will (guaranteed!). You've already listed several ideas that are good - spend a half a day at the Grand Palace (just take a taxi out there, be polite and but refuse to engage one of the "guides" who'll try to latch onto you around the gate - just go in and wander around yourself with your camera), spend a half a day (sweltering) out at Chatachuchak market, etc. And don't worry as to "how to act"...just go with a good attitude, be yourself, and smile on occasion. If it'll help, I'm fairly certain after you've been there that you'll tell yourself: "Hey, that was easy!" Before I got to the Land of Smiles the first time, I heard about a tour package offered at the Oriental. So, I headed over there at 7AM the first morning, talked to the tour desk person there, and signed up. I don't remember what it cost (probably about $50.00 or so) but it was a ride up to Ayutthaya on a small but nice bus, a tour around the ruins up there, an elephant ride (which I declined as it was too damn hot), and then a 4 hour ride in a large boat down the river back to Bangkok (the boat's lower level was a dinning room with great foods whereas the top had chairs to observe the world and, of course, a small bar to wet your whistle). It was a lot of fun, met some nice people (falang mostly), took a lot of photos, relaxed a lot, and got a good/interesting first day impression of Thailand. I'd recommend it if you can afford it. Then, when I got back, I had dinner and then hopped into a taxi to go watch the muay thai fights at Lumpini boxing arena. Then, after another shower (third of the day), I hit the first gogo bar. Exhausting but fun! And I was up at 7AM the next day to have breakfast, head off to the Grand Palace, etc., etc., Hell, that was a long time ago and I was younger then - I'm getting tired just thinking about what I used to do on vacation over here..... Hope you are right.. even thought i am still slightly uptight (keep my fingers crossed..) I am so jealous of you with all those beautiful memories. I guess that is a reason why i want to do this so bad. some wonderful memories to look back on when i get older. AND i am not saying that you are old or implying anything.. Lol it is funny what you said. i am sure you are not that OLD. beside i always find older guys more mature and attractive. Anyway. Thanks so much for your help. I suppose i still have to do some homework.. Quote
Bob Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 i am sure you are not that OLD. Well, I am vastly younger than Fountainhill, Michael, Z, etc. And decades younger than poster Khortose (when he was young, he didn't study history at school because they didn't have any history then*). Guest fountainhall Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Well, I am vastly younger than . . . OK, the truth is the truth - but do you have to be so blatant about it? I do try to preserve my image of being trendy, hip, youthful-thinking and . . . available! Quote

Guest Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 How cheap do you want to go on the hotel? I stay at the Om Yim for about 1100 baht. Some stay in the Malaysia, which I believe is cheaper. I never stayed there, but have walked past it a few times...... Now if you are really on a budget, it's also possible to travel around on the Skytrain, buses & boats, rather than going anywhere near the taxis. Also, if anyone ever comes up & tells you the royal palace is closed & offers a tuk tuk ride, just politely decline & go to the palace anyway. It will be open. Quote
kokopelli Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 augieee; my advice is quite different from some of the others. Get out of Bangkok after one day of visiting the Grand Palace and go to Pattaya. Enjoy the beach, bars and boys. Make the most of your one week visit. As I tell my friends, you don't go to Thailand to visit the Wats/Temples. Quote

You have to fly into Bangkok anyway and depending on the time you arrive, it would be a good idea to spend one night and visit Soi Twilight and during the day, visit the Palace. if you like to shop, consider Siam Paragon. You can take a bus from Ekami bus station to Pattaya. It helps to have an adventurous spirit. There are plenty of farangs in Pattaya who would love to show you around once you get there. The most important thing is: HAVE FUN! Quote

Pattaya has beaches, a heavily developed city environment and many bars where company is on offer at a price (ie rent boys). If that appeals, head down to Pattaya.Of course, a 22 year old will find the nightlife of bangkok offers a lot more opportunities to meet people of his own age, without the other party expecting to be paid for the experience. Also Gayromeo in Bankok seems to have much higher percentage of young people who are looking to meet other young people. Also, as I stated in my first post some, of the Wats & so on really ARE worth seeing. Maybe 3 nights in Bangkok, 4 in Pattaya? Quote

Is there any nice.quiet bars near the beach.? And how about the hotels.? would be too expensive this time of year.? Quote

Guest Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Do you have a problem with me being Chinese/ Japanese or anyplace in Asia.? Our members often like Chinese, Japanese & other East Asian guys a lot, so that's generally an advantage. As for getting from Pattaya to the airport, a taxis should cost 900~1000 baht. It has taken me about 1 hour 20 minutes, but that is usually early in the morning with light traffic. Quote
