Safety on the baht bus

Clearly if a passenger is standing on the rear platform & another vehicle runs in the back, the net result is that our passenger will never walk again. The platforms have negligible structural strength & are located below the bumper of most other vehicles.

So I very much prefer to sit on the baht buses. Whilst on holiday, I have the time to climb on the next baht bus in line & wait a couple more minutes for it to depart.

Good advice.

I assumed at first the underlined wording was a link, but I guess not.

We often hear about safety on baht buses but more often from a security perspective, folks falling foul of pickpockets in the main, so it's good to be reminded of the risk of riding on the platform - there's also the risk you might fall off. Being the worse-for-wear through tiredness or too much alcohol can make you more vulnerable in many instances.

Works for me.

1 Check you are logged in

2 Either click the "Reply to this topic" button above the thread or start typing in the "Reply to this topic" box at the bottom.

I have no problems with Firefox 9.0.1, but did hear of another member having problems with Firefox (unknown version) & this site.

In such circumstances, it may be an idea to log in with another browser (e.g. Chrome or Opera) & write a post or PM to advise Scooby of the issue, so that it can be swiftly fixed.

I use google chrome. I never had a problem before. I see unfollow this topic and another button that says reply.

It is not that important. I don't post often anyway. But since you are not having a problem I am sure it must just be me. No problem

Yikes! Actually, I think that is a problem, PattayaMale. I hope the new stuff isn't presenting any new glitches. I think this difficulty is just a transition. I'm sure Scooby will intervene and look into it. Don't let it dissuade you from posting, you are a valuable member and I enjoy reading your posts. Please stick around.

Back to topic: Safety on baht buses is indeed a primary concern of mine. My boyfriend's mother was a victim of a mishap that occurred before he was born and it caused her a lot of pain over the years. She was standing on said platform when some of her clothing got caught in the metal. Unbeknownst to the driver, the vehicle somehow managed to throw her off the platform and onto the road where she was dragged for over a mile. She suffered a back injury and other complications and eventually became an invalid. Sadly, she died about 4 months ago.

Quite frankly, I am not even sure getting a seat will ensure that you won't get thrown from the bus. This can be a precarious way to travel and I would advise finding a seat furthest in and getting a good grip on the metal rail at all times.

Riders, beware!

Original Subject: Baht bus

If involved in a major incident, of course the baht bus will be less safe than a passenger car where the passengers wear seatbelts. However for low speed urban driving, I'm prepared to take that risk. Now if there's a very low speed incident, such as a baht bus running nto another at 5mph, I expect the sitting passengers to walk away and the standing ones to have crushed legs.

The other topic: Board technical issues

Ultimately these need to be solved by Scooby. However I guess he'll need to know which browsers work & which do not, so it IS constructive to discuss what works & what doesn't, whilst still recognising there could be a problem.

My earlier posts were with Firefox 9.0.1 & this one is with Chrome, just for testing purposes. (Edit: That worked too)

I suppose there is some risk in riding on the back of a baht bus. To me, it is not an overwhelming amount.

I have found myself on the back of the bus numerous times. In fact, during the hot weather, I prefer it as much more comfortable for enjoying the breeze.

The biggest risk I found is my head banging on the ceiling if I happen to lean in and we hit a bump....

Now, the back of a motorcycle taxi....that is a higher level of risk than I normally take. Most often, only after a late night of drinking, diminished reasoning skills combined with impatience. Thankfully, not a frequent problem.
