Insurance Question

The question I have is whether there are any expats out there who actually have theft/fire insurance for their belongings here in Thailand.

I'm renting (long-term) so I don't own the townhouse I live in here in Chiangmai but I did pay out a fair amount to furnish it a year ago; however, I don't have any insurance on the stuff and, so far, I've asked 4 other falangs who live here in Chiangmai and none of them have it either. I'm not even sure if it's available and, of course, have no clue what the price might be.

If anyone actually has it, could you generally advise as to whether the insurance you have covers fire and theft and the general cost for it? Thanks.

I have had my apartment and its contents fully covered since I purchased it in 1999. The policy I have is particularly useful for me as it also extends cover for named items - i.e. lap top computer and iPod - when travelling. I cannot give you the details now, unfortunately, as the policy is kept at my bank and I am leaving at the crack of dawn on Monday for Beijing and Harbin. All I know is that it was originally taken out with Royal and Sun Alliance here in Bangkok. I think they are now part of a larger Thai outfit. If you wish, I'll happily give you the company and policy details on my return at the end of next week.

in these Qs its often very handy/informative to tell your original nationality! Why? Even though I am not a permanent expat, I see that different nations have quite diff. ideas about to insure or not-USAers tend to shun it. I also (have to) read lots of those expat-forums to keep up with Thai things etc and I would rec you to ask on the one for your nation, but even Thaivisa would do.

The best site for my origin has even ads for insurance done- in TH, by people from the same origin. They know best the difference with ''

Have a look at this website. It lists insurance companies in Thailand, many affiliated with larger international insurers. The senior person I deal with is English, the ladies who handle my policy speak fluent English, and the policy itself is written in English.

Well...the insurance idea cropped up when I realized that I lived far too close to a certain falang I know! (folks, we live about 100 yards apart).

Thanks to those who provided...I'll check it out and try to figure out if personal property insurance is available and, if so, what's the cost. If/when I find out the info, I'll try to remember to re-open this thread and post it.

I took a cursory look at this page and found a few references to fire protection, but hardly anything about theft and burglary. That doesn't mean it is isn't buried in one of the links. Site seems most centered around health, life, accident and car insurance.

What FH has is traveler's insurance, which is a different animal altogether.

Bob, you may be wasting your time. I would be surprised if personal property insurance were even available to renters anywhere in Thailand, and if so, would probably be prohibitively expensive with high deductibles. One may have to buy a policy with other things bundled with it and of those I would imagine homeowners are their preferred customer base. As you probably already know, mortgage companies and banks in the US require "basic homeowner's insurance," which includes fire, burglary and vandalism, (but excludes flood and earthquake protection, and must be purchased separately.) But renter's insurance? Here? Nah!

Your chances are better with a lucky amulet to protect you from loss or harm. Bob, how careless of you to toss out that box of Cracker Jack you paid so dearly for at Villa Market.
