Guest fountainhall Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 I was very surprised to receive an email from "daBoss" claiming that as I have had little activity on this site, my email would soon be deleted. The surprise is because I have never joined that site. Indeed, I cannot receive it in Bangkok (where I have lived for 10 years) unless I go through the hassle of a proxy server, which I do very infrequently. Who, therefore, has been peddling my email, I wonder? (I hasten to add I know for sure it can not be this Board). Quote
PattayaMale Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 I don't understand, even if someone was not regularly visiting the site why they (da boss) would delete email addresses? Quote
TotallyOz Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 I got the same e-mail which I ignored. It is a bad move IMHO but that is a decision from someone else. As far as how they got your e-mail, that is very odd. I would think perhaps sometime over the course of the years that maybe you started a registration there even if you did not finish it. If not, then, it is very odd. But, in your e-mail it should give you your username. Just do a search in their member database to see what date it says you joined to see if that makes sense. If it is old, that may explain things. If registered in last few months, that then is another story to tell isn't it? Quote
Gaybutton Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 This is just a guess on my part - I haven't had any communication with DaBoss about this, but my board uses the same basic software. Intentionally or unintentionally, he might have the board set to automatically prune out inactive members if they have not logged in for a specified length of time and the Email may have been automatically generated. If you received that Email, you might want to send an Email of your own to DaBoss. It's entirely possible he might not even be aware that these Emails are going out. Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 I would think perhaps sometime over the course of the years that maybe you started a registration there even if you did not finish it. Spot on! Apologies to everyone. I did a lot of rechecking and finally discovered that I did in fact register 6 years ago when I was on one of my regular trips outside Thailand. To the best of my knowledge I never contributed, but clearly my email was on their books. I should have checked more carefully before I submitted the post! Wishing everyone a happy, healthy and peaceful 2012! Quote
KhorTose Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 A happy New Year to you and this board and all the mods and the administrator. A special Happy New Year to Kokopelli. Please enjoy your flat bread (fry Bread) and remember: It is important to reflect, as a new year starts, what you have learned from the year passing and what you want from the year ahead. May your coming year be filled with joys that only putting your eyes on the Great Spirit can bring. Together, each of you, my people, and I will join together in the Great Spirit and pray for peace. Guest lonelywombat Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 Whenever I visit sawatdee now it is obvous that more and more members are not logging in, just reading. Why this email was sent out staggers me. From my own experience email addresses change from time to time, and few if any remember to notify sites like sawatdee of their new address. If the email deleting email addresses because they have not posted in the last 3/6/12 months is correct, then I would say it is an act of stupidity that can only hurt his forum. Quote
Guest Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 Whenever I visit sawatdee now it is obvous that more and more members are not logging in, just reading. Many forums have more readers than contributors. This allows people to gather all sorts of useful info for their own travels, without reciprocating with information that may be of use to others. (I need to make a few holiday posts too!) As a step to prevent this, some forums don't allow non-members to see photos, others only allow a very small number of threads to be read & some have sections restricted to members who make a certain number of posts. Gaybutton Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 Why this email was sent out staggers me. Have any of you sent a PM or Email to DaBoss or jinks about this? As I said, it may be purely unintentional and they may not even be aware of it. For example, often, on my own board I ban IP numbers when registration attempts come in from that Russian company that is constantly trying to place phony registrations on my board. Sometimes, that also unintentionally bans out legitimate members. Until I receive an Email from a member that happened to, I have no way of knowing it and fixing it for that user. One of the reasons I think it may be unintentional is because I think if they were going to intentionally start deleting members, Emails, or anything else, then they would have posted some sort of announcement about it prior to doing it. Also, on any board it's a good idea to keep your Email address updated. Sometimes a board announcement might be sent out or someone may have sent a PM to you. If someone sends you a PM, most boards send a notification to you via Email informing you that you have a PM waiting. If you're someone who only logs in periodically, then you might not even know about the PM if the board is sending out the notification Email to the wrong address. If you read the board without logging on, you could have a PM sitting there for months without knowing it. Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 If you read the board without logging on, you could have a PM sitting there for months without knowing it. Taking GB's advice, I logged in. On the first attempt I got this - You exceeded the maximum allowed number of login attempts. In addition to your username and password you now also have to solve the CAPTCHA below. However, eventually I did manage to get in. No emails waiting for me. And I noticed that I had indeed made ten posts between 16 May and 5 September 2006. So apologies again to SGT for my first post in this thread. Interestingly, I noticed that each of my posts has a different avatar pic. The first I opened was one of a spider - and I HATE spiders! I did not know about avatars way back in those days. It even took me a long time before I loaded one up here on gt.com. So would the Board automatically allocate different avatars for each posting? Seems odd! Since I had made no contribution for well over 5 years, I'm not surprised I got the email about discontinuing my membership. So I tried to delete the membership. Not finding an appropriate heading, I sent a mail to the board administration, "I shall be grateful if you will kindly delete my membership. Thank you." The form then reappeared with a message, "The value you entered is too long." So I shortened it twice, until it just said "Please delete membership." This again was "too long"! FInally I sent one to the poster named daBoss who I assume is the owner. That went through. Funny that they would wish to delete my membership, yet at the same time make it so difficult for me to do that on my own! Quote
Gaybutton Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 daBoss who I assume is the owner. Yes, he's the owner. I hope you made him aware of the Email. Based on your post above, his board software apparently has several glitches and I wouldn't be surprised if the Email turns out to be one of them. Again, if you or anyone else experiences these kinds of problems, unless you tell him about it he won't know a problem even exists. Quote
