This is very nice of Happy Boys Bar. I am trying to get clarification that this will be only happening at Happy Boys Bar? I ask because it is posted by Eros, another bar in Sunee.

Regardless, it is very generous.

Thanks for not asking us to wear our old uniforms. I know there are many tailors in Pattaya, but probably not enough cloth....

But you could show the way by getting your World War II one out of storage - and don't forget to wear your medals! :o

We sincerely apoligise to anyone who we have caused greive with this promotion.

The idea we had first to offer two drinks for the price of one for any veteran to honor them for their services.

This idea was causing much confusion with the staff, because they had no idea of verifying wgi was a veteran and many staff their English not sufficient to have discus this with the customers.

We changed this for this reason to a simple second drink half price.

There was never our intention to cause any disrespect to anyone.

Since many comments felt this was causing disrespect for to the people who served their country in uniform, we withdraw this offer.

I like to thank all the people who posted comments and I hope you accept our apology.

We hereby withdraw our offer of a second drink half price

I am not sure on which forum/s the comments about disrespect appeared, but none appeared here. When I saw the original post, a concern did cross my mind that the promotion could be seen by some as disrespectful. On the other hand, 11th November is a time when many countries honour all those who have died in wars. Marking that date in almost any form, especially when young people are involved, serves as a reminder of that sacrifice. Sure, it was a promotion for the bar, but I felt on balance it showed no disrespect.

That said, though, I think it is pretty bad marketing to offer a second drink at half price, and then withdraw it - even though it might have applied to only a few customers! Far better, surely, to say - sorry, guys, we did not think the promotion through well enough, so everyone will get a second drink at half price. You could qualify it by making the offer valid only up to, say 10:00 pm. But you would have gained goodwill, in my view.

I have not heard nor do I view this promotion as disrespectful. I thought it was nice that a bar wanted to honor those that have served in the military.

Pattaya is a monument to many who served during the Vietnam conflict as many came to Pattaya for R&R (Rest and Relaxation). If it was not for the foreign military, we might not of even had a Pattaya!

The drink prices are so low at Happy Boys Bar anyway, I can understand why it would be 50% off the second drink.

As the owner learned it would be hard for his staff to know who had been in the military, so a change to "50% off everyone's second drink in honor of those that served" should have been fine!

I can't see any disrespect! I am sorry for the owner that he experienced this!

PattayaMale, I will be very disappointed in you if you do not at least have one drink in my honor. After all, I have tried my best to service the men in the military since I was in high school and my grandmother lived near a military base. :)

I assure you that I have done my country proud!

Anything for you Michael...(as a figure of speech).

I am sure the men of the service appreciate your efforts very much. Is it true enlistment went up during that time?

I will indeed have a drink in your honor. "Bottoms up!!"

To clarify the situation, we just wanted to honour the people who has served in uniform.

As was pointed out by other members are prices are very reasonable, and we were not looking to make a lot of money of this event.

But by the reaction on other boards and by emails, I understood that many people found this a distastfull and dis-reseptfull promotion.

The last thing I want to do on November 11 is to upset the very people for whom November 11 has special meaning.

If some one has served in uniform and is visiting Happy Boys Bar, I will be pleased to offer you your second drink free on November 11.

just talk to me first please.

This disabled American veteran agrees 100% with this post. I too read your offer and thought what a nice thing to do.

For what it's worth, the "disrespectful" posts were made on SGT by one or two posters one of whom no longer lives in Thailand.

I thought SGT was sold and aiming to advertise on the site to bring in revenue. I don't have time to visit other forums except this one so I don't know what happens over there. Have things changed under the new leadership or the same?

Hi Peter.

I wanted to add my words of support to you as well.

I did not think your offer was in any way disrespectful. It is difficult to accommodate everyone's point of view. I hope this experience does not cause you to stop trying promotions and other ideas. I am also glad that you take the time to post here and explain how things are going.

Eros is a fun bar and I wish you nothing but the best.

See you (and the boys) in a couple of weeks.

Unfortunately, the topic is no longer available on SGT, maybe it got out of had after I posted there some days ago on this subject. The reaction there was entirely negative. I too don't think this promotion is a good idea, there are a lot of technical problems (do you have documentation with you to prove that you are a veteran? Am I who served in compulsory military service in Germany a veteran?)

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. It does not surprise me to hear you say that the reaction on SGT was entirely negative. That is the reputation of that Board.

I also do not understand why you think that because you served in the German military, you would not be a veteran. Why would you think that? Veteran just refers to someone with long experience in a field. Nationality has nothing to do with it.

Now how about a bit of common sense. Do you REALLY think the bar was going to ask for discharge papers? The owner was trying to do something nice. He should be thanked for it!

It seemed to me as though it was a good thought that maybe wasn't communicated clearly enough to get the point across that (in my opinion, anyway) it was an offer to those who had served their country and not something crass like raffling off the company of a younger man. I think it was an unfortunate misunderstanding. Had it been my club I would have thought it a better idea to buy a drink up front for a veteran, but that could get expensive for a club owner there!

As for the Sawatdee Gay Thailand forum it's been common knowledge for some time that the board was bought from Elephantspike.

While I wish no ill will on the new owner and wish this new money-making venture the best of luck, he hasn't come out and identified himself yet... and I think some would have a little more respect him more if he did.

He's certainly dropped enough hints via his posts as "member" and "owner" to allow many to already have figured it out.

I agree. I am reminded of a "old veteran's" event some time ago. I was visiting the US Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio/USA. There is a huge collection of military aircraft, even including a UFO from Roswell, New Mexico. One older veteran was proudly explaining and pointing, to his grandson, a fighter plane he flew in WWII. It was a Messerschmidt 109!

They have a new owner who also owns a bar in Pattaya. They have new rules. BUT depending on the Venue someone posts about the rules are "flexible".

The new owner and Mod at SGT are doing a good job on policing their forum. Recently they removed another "cheap shot" made by a poster regarding Eros.

It looks like DaBoss is JustMe. I don't know either individual but he posted about his purchase from ElephantSpike and his hopes for the forum. I wish him great success. I think he is the owner of a bar I really like in Boyztown and if that is the case, I hope he does as great a job with SGT as he has with his bar.

I wouldn't believe that DaBoss is JustMe, but he disclosed this information himself on SGT, so I assume it's true. What surprises me is that DaBoss' English is devoid of mistakes (at least I didn't find any), whereas JustMe makes a lot of mistakes (and not just typos).

The post could have been written for DaBoss/Justme. That does not mean they are not the same person, just that someone else wrote the letter.

Good point. But then the handle should be "JustUs."
