PattayaMale Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 There are many people on this Board that seem to have answers...........so who really knows when 3G will be in most of Pattaya and on what service? Quote
bkkguy Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 As I understand it - and it is a very confusing subject at present - the situation in Pattaya is: - True Move currently claims to cover most of Pattaya and Jomtien with their 850 MHz 3G network and have a number of pre- and post-paid packages including "unlimited" 3G data (in reality 5GB/month at 3G then throttled to 2G speed) bundled with unlimited 2G and unlimited Wi-Fi, they claim realistic speeds are 1-3Mb/s (they make the same claim for Bangkok and my experience is close to this). This however is about to be obsoleted by True's new network expected to be announced within the next 1-2 weeks - True is about to annoumce their Real Move 800 Mhz/2100 Mhz 3G network packages which should cover Pattaya and Jomtien but what frequencies in what areas and what prices etc not yet announced - AIS is about to announce their 900 MHz/2100 MHz 3G network packages which may or may not cover Pattaya and Jomtien initially but should by the end of the year but what frequencies in what areas and what prices etc not yet announced I don't know if any of the other service providers in Pattaya are offering 3G in Pattaya yet. I would love to hear any other reliable information on other offereings in Pattaya but more interestingly Bangkok/nationwide bkkguy Quote
TotallyOz Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 Pattayamale, what are you using this for? IPhone? IPad? Internet surfing? Have you tried the various services and found them good? bad? I used 12Call for Unlimited Blackberry and it worked fine for me but I was mostly using it for e-mail and Internet. I never downloaded massive amounts of data. Quote
PattayaMale Posted July 20, 2011 Author Posted July 20, 2011 @bkkguy. Thanks for the information. @Michael. My BF has a HTC Legend and I had a HTC Desire HD. His battery died (1 year) and so I decided to buy a Samsung Galaxy s II. I was trying to decide if I wanted a new sim card since I have DTAC and the service is not so good. Since it is a hassle to change or move a mobile number I was trying to figure out if I would go with True or AIS (1 2 call). Since the Samsung Galaxy S II does a great job with videos (the screen and colors are fantastic), I was wondering which service would have 3G first. Quote
TotallyOz Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 I am jealous as I want the Samsung myself. For the videos, why not use the wifi in your home? It would be 100 times faster I think and few if any issues. Quote

We each downloaded the same video over our home wifi. I used the new Samsung and he used the HTC Desire HD. The Samsung download at HD resolution faster than his by far! I am not really tech savvy so do not really know why. Just that it is faster. And a MUCH better screen picture. Quote
bkkguy Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 I decided to buy a Samsung Galaxy s II ... Since it is a hassle to change or move a mobile number I was trying to figure out if I would go with True or AIS (1 2 call )... I was wondering which service would have 3G first. have you tried using the mobile number transfer system in Thailand? it seems to be quite straightforward, but I have yet to actually transfer a number! which version of the Galaxy II did you get? as I understand it the models offered here, depending on which shop/vendor you buy from, are tri-band not quad band as some of the overseas models are - i.e. either (2G) GSM 850/1800/1900 and (3G) HSDPA 850/1900/2100 OR (2G) GSM 900/1800/1900 and (3G) HSDPA 900/1900/2100 but not (2G) GSM 850/900/1800/1900 and (3G) HSDPA 850/900/1900/2100 though some forum posters elsewhere suggest all models have the hardware to support quad-band 3G 850/900/1900/2100 but only some models have the software that will allow 850 or 900 to be enabled if it is current disabled! TOT and CAT are supposedly negotiating mutual roaming access on their respective 2100 networks for themselves and their resellers, the current True Move 3G is 850 but their new service is 800 (which I think only old CDMA phones support) but will also allow access to the TOT/CAT 2100 network, and the current AIS "test" network is 900 and the new network is 900 (for GSM ADVANCE SIMs and some new SIMs but not sure about 1 2 Call SIMs) but they will also allow access to TOT/CAT 2100 network - but neither True nor AIS not TOT/CAT have revealed details of what frequencies will be available in what areas! COMMART X-Gen opened today in Bangkok - hopefully there will be some announcements! of course the rest of the world is going 4G already ... bkkguy Quote

bkkguy Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 This is the model I have ... HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 Mhz interesting, I have the original Gayaxy S and am really happy with it and am not sufficiently tempted by the new model's larger screen and faster processor, but if I could get a quad band model here I might seriously consider it - did you buy the phone here? which shop/vendor? where did you get the specifications from? at COMMART X-Gen today in Bangkok the Galaxy II phones at the True booth were all HSDPA 850/1900/2100 Mhz and at the AIS booth were all HSDPA 900/1900/2100 Mhz according to the booth staff and at a small shop in CentralWorld last weekend I was told they had two models one 850, one 900, but not a quad band 850/900 - but I don't really beleive anything the sales people say here because none of them seem to know anything about their products! and I have not yet seen how to get into the service menu on the Galaxy II and see what frequencies are available or enabled! the staff at the True booth today said the current True Move 850 Mhz 3G plans would continue to be available "long time" and did not know anything about the new Real Move plans but said you would need a TOT SIM to access TOT/CAT 3G network and cannot do voice calls ... the staff at the AIS booth thought there may be some new 3G packages comming "soon" but had no details - obviously their marketing department does not see any value in pre-promotion at a major trade show like COMMART X-Gen ... the staff at the DTAC booth did not even seem to be aware that True was trying to have DTAC decleared an illegal foreign trading entity so I didn't even bother looking at their 3G offerings ... there are obviously more important reasons for living in Thailand than 3G access, so I am off to the explore these tonight! bkkguy Quote
