Reccomendations for Tailor and Optician Please

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Will be going to Thailand and Cambodia soon and would like to find a tailor and an optician in Bangkok that I can place an order with at the beginning of my trip and pick up around 3 weeks later before I return home.

At the tailor's I would like to get 2-3 pairs of chinos, 2-3 shirts and perhaps a suit.

At the optician's I am hoping to buy a pair of glasses and a pair of shades with my prescription. My challenge with the optician is that my head is quite big 8) so I need to find a place that has a selection of frames that will fit.

Any reccomendations please?

my last three pairs of glasses are from Bangkok and last time I used quite big shop on Silom by soi 1. Not sure what it's name is but it's quite prominent and well stocked. English was spoken.  You may try there

My impression is that eyeglasses & frames are not much cheaper in Thailand than in the US, because of the import duties, I guess.  I bought lenses in Phnom Penh from Owndays, a Japanese-based eyeware chain.  They have several branches around PP.  Good value & satisfactory service.

Owndays is reasonably priced but there isn't much options if you have a wider face like me...

How about a periodontist?

Don't know specifically about perio treatment but you could try the Dental Dept of Bumrungrad Hospital.  I broke a tooth in BKK back in September & their treatment (on 4 visits) was excellent.

The only tailor I ever went to in BKK was on my very first trip to Bangkok in 2016 - State Tailors (in the State Tower building/Lebua hotel). It was my tour guide that took me there, no doubt he would have got a kickback, but the suits that were made for me fitted perfectly and I still have them today, although I don't wear them much anymore because I got a bit fat :(

I used to use 'Stylist Tailor', down the street to the Shangri-la. 50 yards before the hotel. The hotel recommended them. They  were good, but now, with so much discounting at home. It's cheaper to get good quality shirts, etc, in UK.

I usually don’t recommend a specific tailor. Most of the good tailors got their own style that they do well, and it’s wise to go with the house style. Best would be to go to a few and ask to see samples of their work and see which one has the style of suit you’re looking for.
