I have to agree, on a fundamental level. Although I can't say I mourn the victim, one can't condone murder just because the victim's a nasty person. I must confess that I cheered when Jeffrey Dahmer was murdered, but even in his case it was still murder. Even if a small part of me wishes Luigi could get away with it, my sensible self hopes he doesn't. Ruthrieston, floridarob, vinapu and 1 other 2 1 1 Quote

floridarob Posted December 13 Posted December 13 This has gone on for too long, UnitedHealth had the highest number of claims denied under his leadership....he was the one that could've changed that. This has been going on too long, the separation of wealth has grown so much, it's ridiculous..... I have zero sympathy for him or his family as do many people....I hope it's a wake up call to the greedy and not only to hire more security! @Mavica no number of downvotes you put will change my mind about this guy, only about you. I wish the news agencies would do an expose on how many deaths and suffering this guy's policies has been the cause of....I personally know 2. fedssocr, unicorn, Latbear4blk and 1 other 3 1 Quote
Members Latbear4blk Posted December 13 Members Posted December 13 I truly believe that the people saying "murder is murder" to condemn Hot Luigi are a bunch of hypocrites. I bet you there are a thousand situations where they would justify assassination, executions, and even genocide. But that is just a personal opinion. What is not a personal opinion: Luigi Mangioni is innocent. If you are so concern about the rule of law, you have to accept he is innocent until proven guilty. Otherwise, you are a hypocrite. Fact. Whether or not you agree, Mr. Thompson is not seen as an innocent victim. Fact. Whether or not you agree, whoever killed him is seen as a hero who self sacrifice to make a political statement and effect change. Fact. This is triggering unexpected reactions. I am not so interested in Luigi's real motivations, but in the consequences of this assassination. Will Luigi be judged and condemned? Will the prosecution find a jury that will condemn him? It looks like #FreeLuigi and Luigi's popular support continues growing. Additionally, copycats may start popping up. I have not seen anything in the WaPo, and the topic seems to be intentionally hidden by US media, but the international press is discussing the growing threat for Corporate America. The photo above is taken from an Argentine newspaper, and shows an example of flyers that are popping up in NYC. In the past, and this is my political formation, we would advocate for community organization and a collective political fight. In the past, and this is history, significant political change was achieve mostly through violent riots and popular mobilizations. In the present, younger people seems to be more self centered and individualist. Perhaps Luigi is a sign of this new times. The Elon Musks of the world are pretty much almighty and protect themselves behind their operational puppets, their many Mr. Thompsons. Perhaps the young does not see organization as a way to go against limitless capitalist and corporate greed. Perhaps individual acts of terrorism are the sign of the times. Perhaps Luigi's act is perceived as a heroic, individual self sacrifice to make a rotund political statement and effect change. Most interestingly, he could be successful if CEO hunting season is opening. I am not advocating for it, but just fascinated for this development. floridarob, fedssocr and Mavica 2 1 Quote
bkkmfj2648 Posted December 13 Posted December 13 Instead I see a different voice / alarm being manifested - and that is with the use of AI (Artificial Intelligence). In the case of UHC, they were using AI to determine if an insurance claim was getting denied or not. Prior to the use of AI, this task was done by humans. What is the difference = AI versus Human ? Humans have compassion. Unfortunately, the AI that I have been exposed to in this period seems to lack "human compassion". So, for matters of health and life and death, should we as the human race allow AI to make those decisions for us ? Shall we hide behind the decisions of AI to obtain more profits (greed) at the detriment of the human race? This is the conversation that I would hope come out of this unfortunate assassination. unicorn, vinapu, Latbear4blk and 1 other 4 Quote

Evidently, Luigi's mesmerizing looks have to do with this viral reaction. However, we do not know what would have happened should he was the Hunchback. In my opinion, I think there is enough evidence to think that people would have still empathized with the targeted execution of a representative of greedy capitalist corporations, specially the health care cluster in the US. About the second part, I share your concern. As an educator I can see everyday how we are disintegrating in anomia and amorality. Rather than condemning Luigi, which would be scapegoating, I choose to reflect on how we need radical reforms in our economic systems. The radical immorality of a few making enough money to buy planets, while an overwhelming majority of honest workers cannot pay their rent or feed their children after working 12 hours daily, it is a sure recipe for social disintegration and terrorist actions. fedssocr, floridarob, Mavica and 1 other 3 1 Quote

Problem will start when those rich enough to buy a planet will start building their own armies putting in question state's exclusivity on power. Musk's 400 billion net worth or anybody else's for that matter is impressive but it doesn't mean they can cash all that in. You house may be worth million but if all neighbours on the street with similar houses list them all at once , all of you may be happy if you get 600 000 . Asad's supposed 2 billions did not help him much and now we will see how much Moses and Putin will charge him for hospitality unicorn 1 Quote

Well, that's a Sci Fi classic dystopian landscape. I do not know whether that will happen or any of the alternative dystopian futures, but I am pessimistic. Most people seem to be choosing the individualist way, even when it may be selfless. I am not wired to believe in individualist solutions. I, myself, am giving up. At 62, I am not trying to change the world any longer and instead I am focusing on myself. I have lots of things to get better at. Meanwhile, even if everything is going to hell, I am thrilled at what is happening. And by the way, I am (was) rather an anti-capitalist than an anti-communist. Both systems have pros and cons. Maybe the exit is something in between. vinapu, floridarob and fedssocr 3 Quote
