Wondering what the new Syrian government will be like...

I suspect it's going to be a dictatorship again, but the developments over the coming weeks will be fascinating. I wonder if the new government will allow the Russians to keep their military bases, for example.

With Trump getting involved on Jan 21, think the WORST.   If there is any hope for Peace, Trump surely will fuck it up, just because HE CAN.

Russia invaded Ukraine during the biden/Cackles administration.
Russia invaded/annexed Crimea during the Hussein Obama/Dementia Joe administration.
Hamas invaded Israel, committing brutal atrocities and kidnapping hundreds, during the biden/Cackles administration.
Russian troops remained in Russia during the first Trump administration.
While the world fears Donald Trump, they laughed at Joe biden (while he was napping).

It has been the democrats who have f__ked things up. Donald Trump is a peacemaker. "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God"  Matthew 5:9. Donald Trump is a child of GOD.

Assad brutally murdered tens of thousands with chemical agents, and EK turns this string into a pro-Trump post. Pretty disgusting. I heard on the news that Turkey helped the rebels. Maybe the Russian bases could be turned over to Turkey?

I beg to differ. It was my sweetie @Suckrates who tried to turn this into a Trump-bashing thread with his nasty comment. I merely responded to his taunts.
It's been over a month, and he still hasn't recovered from the election results...

And I WONT until the Trump regime is overthrown by the American people, like they did in Syria !   Dictators got to GO !

The clock is ticking down to the next 2 years.... America should be damaged enough by then for the people to FIGHT back...

Dictator? Lol. Dictators aren't democratically elected. He was given a sweeping mandate by the American people, winning ALL SEVEN SWING states, the US House and the Senate.
Please don't turn this thread into one of your many Trump-bashing threads. You saw how successful that was on November 5th.
The topic is the fall of the Assad regime. Try to stay on topic.....

I trust that you mean overthrown democratically, not a la Trump. It seems almost axiomatic that the economy will be in a shambles, particularly with respect to inflation, given the insane tariff wars which appear to be coming up. I'm not sure if the big change in Congress will be in 2 years or 4, but it seems inevitable. In the meantime, I've been moving funds from stocks to bonds.

Donald Trump: 77,237,942 votes

Kamala Harris: 74,946,837 votes

Clearly, a win for Mr. Trump.  Sweeping mandate?  No. Not by any stretch of the imagination.  3.3 million fewer people cast votes in 2024 compared to the 2020 election.  A nation divided.

Syrians are demanding that Assad be returned to face charges. I suppose they could make the continued leasing of the Russian bases in Syria contingent on his return. I wonder how Putin would react if they make that demand.

The same as with Snowden: to ignore.

First of all, no one wants Snowden that badly, and even if it were the case, there are no Russian military bases in the US with which to bargain. I suspect that whoever comes to power in Syria will really want Assad dead (Assad did, after all, directly order the deaths and torture of tens of thousands--not the case with Snowden), or at least imprisoned. And the new government will be under no obligation to honor Assad's deals with Putin. Quite the contrary. If anything, the new government may resent the previous support Russia provided for Assad's murderous regime.

Syrians might decide it's payback time:

https://foreignpolicy.com/2017/11/16/russia-vetoes-u-n-effort-to-finger-those-responsible-for-syrian-chemical-weapons-attacks/

"November 16, 2017, 5:19 PM
Russia on Thursday vetoed a U.S.-drafted resolution to extend the mandate of United Nations chemical weapons inspectors in Syria... The Russian “no” essentially shutters a U.N.-mandated chemical weapons inspection unit created two years ago to hold those who used sarin gas and other toxic agents accountable for their crimes. The team previously found the Syrian government and the Islamic State, or ISIS, had unleashed chemical weapons on civilians in Syria

Dear, future "government" is in UN list  of designated terrorist groups... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_designated_terrorist_groups

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (you know them under the label Al-Quaeda), exactly they took Damask... if you dreaming about bright future of Syria, you should correct your dream at least in few points:

  • it will be Shariah state with Shariah law, it will be theocratic state,
  • there will be no democracy at all because to make election in Syria will be not possible due quite big set of different military groups acting in interests of different countries,
  • ISIS will get strength again because of unrest and because there are no Assad's army anymore to suppress them,
  • with very high probability there will be civil war, maybe for few years, maybe nonstop and endless, few "governments"... like in Libya now - one sits in UN but controls only capital, other are real local govts...

whatever you think about the Assad regime, it was the last civilian/secular regime in the region, and it fell, now the mullahs will be in charge

and regarding the Russian army: it is better for the West that it stays there, because if the Russian troops leave Syria, in a week they will be on the Ukrainian front, where Ukraine is already in a very bad situation...

so, if you want to have picture about future of Syria - just take a look on Afghanistan and Taliban -  if Al-Quaeda will have enough power in Syria, or on Libya, if it will have not enough power to control whole country.

Interesting, but irrelevant to the question as to whether or not the new government might demand the return of Assad as a precondition to letting the Russian Federation keep its bases. You are the Tsar of deflection and throwing out irrelevant information.

the Tsar

You shouldn't joke about the Tsar - the mother of the last Tsar of Russia was a Danish princess, and her sister was the wife of the British King Edward IIV and the mother of George V

Almost all the royal houses of Europe are related...
