Guest takeaway77 Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 I have found this discussion board quite helpful in planning my holiday to Thailand (Bangkok and Pattaya). I'll be staying in the beach area in Pattaya and want to visit gogo bars at night. What's the primary difference between Boyztown and Sunee Plaza in terms of quality or type of show and experience? Also, I understand all Thais have ID card with birth date conforming to Thai calendar. If I understand this correctly, 2011 is 2554 in Thai years. Thus someone with birth date of 2525 is 29 years old. Do I have this right? Many thanks for all comments. Cheers. Quote
Bob Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 Thus someone with birth date of 2525 is 29 years old. Do I have this right? Yes..IF they've already had their birthday this year (if not, still 28). All the newer ID cards use our number system with arabic numberals (so, for example, it'd show 1981 for somebody who's currently 30 years of age). Even the old ones show arabic numerals for the year (in Thai years, of course) and you've got the proper formula. If you want to be extra cautious, simply have the desk at your hotel recheck the ID when you arrive (a few hotels will actually do that on their own and hold the ID until your guest leaves). It's wise to be safe. Here's one of the newer ID cards and you can see how easy it is to tell the age: Quote
Gaybutton Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 What's the primary difference between Boyztown and Sunee Plaza in terms of quality or type of show and experience? I think you would be making a mistake by taking anyone's advice and opinions about that. Both areas are in close proximity to each other. Why not try both areas and decide for yourself? Quote
Guest anonone Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 Each bar has it's own uniqueness, regrdless of location. Even night to night, the vibe of a place can be different due to staff working at that time, or how many customers are visiting. Any attempt at generalizing is not accurate. It is also why everyone has their favorite places, which others might not care for. Not all gogo bars have formal "shows", so if that is important for you it would wise to ask around for times and types of shows. I would also suggest visits to some beer / host bars. There are a couple in boyztown, many more in Sunee, and more in Jomtien Complex. It Is a very different experience than a gogo bar. It can be a lot of fun and a nice change of pace. Once you have taken a first look at all the options, you will know what you like. Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 Here's a useful chart showing the months in Thai. Quote
Guest Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 It's a 10 minute walk from Boystown to Sunnee, so it's easy to follow Gaybuttons advice & try both. I suggest starting off in Boystown in somewhere like Funny Boys. Then go to Sunee when you have a better idea about ID cards & so on, because you need to take more care there. Quote
Guest takeaway77 Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 Thanks to all for the very helpful suggestions and ideas! Quote

You certainly do have to take care. I ventured into one a gogo in Sunee, and was totally shocked. In fact, I couldn't get out of the place fast enough. I literally poured the beer down my neck and practically ran out of the place (paying my bill first, of course). Every single guy, or I should say boy, was at least two years under age. I felt as if I'd put myself unintentionally and unwillingly in jeopardy by just entering the place. I'm not sure if every a gogo is like that, but I stuck with the open-air bars after that experience. Quote

I wonder if there are bars there that have a reputation for employing staff of legal age and thus safe to venture into. Quote
Bob Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 That's a disturbing report about Sunnee. I reside in Chiangmai most of each year and I can tell you that nothing like that happens at any gogo bar (or even beer bar)in Chiangmai. I can't definitively talk about Sunee Plaza at all (other than I ventured into two gogo bars there last year and saw nobody that looked underage in either bar) but I will say that I've reviewed various gay Thai message boards for years and I have never seen a report anything like that. I'm not saying Patpat is wrong (because I wasn't there) but I'm a bit shocked to hear that all (let alone a majority) of the boys in any bar were underage. But maybe the guys who spend a fair amount of time in the Sunnee Plaza area will comment on the issue. Quote
Moses Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 What's the primary difference between Boyztown and Sunee Plaza in terms of quality or type of show and experience? For me Boyztown is primary place for straight tourists to watch gays and gay-place ("famous BoyzTown!"). Japanese with cameras... Sunee - is primary for gays. Quote
Guest Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 For me Boyztown is primary place for straight tourists to watch gays and gay-place ("famous BoyzTown!"). Japanese with cameras... Sunee - is primary for gays. I have to disagree. Boystown & the surrounding streets must have more gogo bars than Sunee now. Their gogo dancers are not earning money by pleasuring Japanese tourists with cameras, rather they are there to serve gay clients. Also, if we disregard all the Sunee dancers who are of questionable age, then Boystown probably has the best selection of guys on stage. That's where I've seen the nicest looking ones in the last 2 years anyway. Of course, it's also well worth a visit to Sunee bars such as Happy Boys. Quote
Moses Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 I have to disagree. Boystown & the surrounding streets must have more gogo bars than Sunee now. "must have" or "have"? anyway: my reply is about groups of Japanese who is walking via Boyztown one by one and take pictures... I don't like to be model for them - I feel myself like a monkey in zoo then... Quote

I know some who are over 18yo and look 15 while others who are 15 look over 18 yo. The majority of the workers are over 18. There are some bars/clubs where there is no question that they are 18 or over. Quote
