The Soviet Union, with all its great communism, failed.  Maybe capitalism could have worked in Russia if Genocide Man didn't take over and turn it into the weak piece of shit it is.   I mean, how many countries can you live in where minority families are paid by the state to turn their men into meat?  In the US, we have child tax credits that eliminate poverty.  In China, they have taken a huge swipe at eliminating poverty and hunger.  In Russia, Genocide Man has to turn his people into meat to keep his weak economy going.   See the difference?

The US is the economic envy of the world.  Poor Genocide Man's balls are on Master Xi's leash.  I wonder if it hurts?  And poor Master Xi.  His economy ain't doing so well since he cuddled up to Genocide Man and decided maybe state socialism is the hot new thing.  Even though it destroyed the Soviet Union and was a disaster in China for decades.

This is one silver lining about Trump.   He will be gone in four years.  If he does not die of obesity and stupidity first.  But in the meantime he will confuse things between Master Xi and his leashed pit bull.   I mean, it's not like anyone in the US really wants Genocide Man's tired old balls on our leash.  Let Master Xi control his pit bull. But Trump will give an extra tug to that leash in a way Biden couldn't.  It'll be fun to watch.

But it won't alter the fundamental economic trajectory.  The US and China will prosper, ang have to figure out how to get along.  The Russian Federation will collapse of being an unprincipled, hated, and failed state.

Even if we stipulate Lichtman fucked up badly on this one, he is still 9 out of 11.  

And in the two cases he was wrong - Gore in 2000, and Trump in 2024 (but not 2016) - they were close elections.   In 2000 Gore actually won the popular vote.  So 9 out of 11 ain't bad.   With the two off being close calls.  Trump won 49.9 % of the vote.  And changing 200,000 or so votes in three states would have made Harris the winner.

The Lichtman thing proved two things, I think.

First, MAGA true believers like @EmmetKruelty are deeply unprincipled, and deeply stupid sycophants.  And they have a callous disregard - if not abject hatred - for truth.  When Lichtman was way out on a limb in 2016 saying Trump would win, stupid unprincipled sycophants like @EmmetKruelty loved it.  Now, he'll throw rocks through Lichtman's window just like any good German would.  For the idiot true believers, this has nothing to do with truth and principles.

Second, Lichtman is proving in his reaction to his incorrect prediction Harris would win that there is in fact a problem with arrogant liberal elites.  His stuff about "disinformation" being to blame for his incorrect prediction is not completely wrong.  But it is just stupid. 

Disinformation has been part of every POTUS election in my lifetime - whether it is coming from Genocide Man or some slick American campaign consultant.  Telling working class people that they are dumb for not understanding that inflation hurt them is just arrogant and stupid.  The antidote is guys like Ruben Galllego.  He is the Democrat who won by the most in a swing state Trump won.  He basically said, "I feel your pain.  I want to go to DC to help you, not billionaire donors."  He won.  Not even close, for a purple state.

The person I listen to more than any other in Ron Brownstein.  And I think he nailed it.  Which in 2024 is actually as obvious as Putin's genocide.  It's the economy, stupid.  The reaction against Biden and inflation was so broad - every state, almost every county - that you don't have to try hard to figure out what was going on.

So what I wish Lichtman would do is try to objectively assess how he got it wrong this time.   

To me there is an obvious answer.  He fucked up on his short term economy key.  Whether we are actually in a recession or not, it feels like a recession due to inflation.  Not to older voters who are affluent, like me, who supported Biden by similar numbers as 2020.   But to younger Latinos, and White guys who like the Nelk Boys and lose money on online sports betting and have a hard time paying their rent?   Trump crushed it with them.  If Lichtman tweeked that key, he could have reflected what was obviously the driver more accurately.

The funny thing, as I mentioned before, is that Lichtman got the very same thing right in 1992.  He predicted Clinton would win, correctly.  He turned his short-term economy key against Bush 41.  He argued that even though the 1990 recession was over, people didn't feel that way.  So he is an academic who likes to pride himself on being consistent.  But in this case, he was inconsistent.

It's one election.  The interesting thing is this was not 1980, or 2008, when the incumbent party got completely shellacked due to a shitty economy.  Democrats did slightly better in House races in 2024 than in 2022.  We picked up three seats in California.  Even though there was a clear shift to the right in California as well.  So Democrats now have to live and learn from our mistakes.  So does Lichtman.   Don't you love democracy, and attention to facts and truth?
