Wife for hire’: Inside Thailand’s rental marriage trend

From The Thaiger

Thailand’s notorious “rental wife” trend is turning heads and sparking heated debates. Dubbed the “black pearl” phenomenon, this controversial practice is thriving in Pattaya’s red-light districts, offering foreign tourists a temporary taste of companionship for a fee.

The practice, often called “temporary marriage,” sees women from impoverished rural areas become companions to tourists, offering services ranging from casual companionship to acting as tour guides. Contracts last anywhere from a few days to several months, with fees varying based on the woman’s looks, age, and education—ranging from US$1,600 to an eye-watering US$116,000.

Lavert A. Emmanuel’s new book, Thai Taboo: The Rise of Wife Rental in Modern Society, dives into this shadowy world, describing how the practice, once hidden, has now become a significant income source for young people struggling to make ends meet.

“This isn’t just a transactional arrangement. Some women end up marrying their clients, while others maintain long-term paid relationships.”

Anyone know if there is a MALE version of this ?

The reason that I ask is because when I look at my monthly expenses as a retiree in Thailand - the number ONE expense line item is what I refer to as the "guy tax".

So, it would be great to know if this Husband Rental alternative would be more cost effective than my monthly "guy tax".

Through my current main squeeze, I got to know his best friend, who is 1 of 2 Thai guys who share the same sugardaddy - I believe that he is Canadian.

I was VERY curious about this arrangement so I interviewed his friend about what this arrangement was about.  Here is what I learned:

  • Rich Canadian Man (RCM) wants 2 Thai guys to take care of him - especially later in life when he may need elderly assistance,
  • RCM selected the first Thai guy to be his boyfriend = sugarbaby {SB1} (he is 32 - so not so much of a baby),
  • Then RCM told SB1 to help him select SB2 with the following criteria:
  •      SB2 should be like a boyfriend to SB1,
  •      SB2 + SB1 will sleep together most of the time in their own bedroom,
  •      RCM may request that SB1 or SB2 occasionally sleep with him on a weekly basis - as RCM wants his own private bedroom.  SB1 and SB2 should not get jealous if one of them is invited to sleep with RCM and the other is not.
  • RCM wants harmony in the household - so that all 3 are a happy family.

When I learned about this arrangement - I became super curious and super interested as it might seem to be a perfect solution to my future life here oneday.

Do any of you reading this:

  • have an opinion - could it work?
  • are currently in this type of living situation and can share with us (or to me via private DM) what are the pros and cons and how to make it work.

The primary appeal to me is for my more elderly years when I might need health and/or mobility assistance and the idea to have 2 guys that I can always depend on until I pass away really appeals to me.  Especially, if there are 2 and 1 decides to abandon us - then at least I still have 1 remaining life companion assistant.

Most expats in Pattaya have a live in boyfriend, including myself.
In most cases I can think of, these boys have normal jobs (hotels, ect) and get to live a farang level lifestyle with their boyfriend/husband.

It's pretty easy to find, especially if you are into slightly older boys (30s) who have aged out of the gogo / bar scene.

I think this is an interesting alternative to living in a nursing home in the western world, at probably the same cost!

I once saw a report in german tv about a man with mobility issues living in Pattaya with 3 ladyboys, apparently all of them happy. Sex wasnt mentioned in that report though.

After watching my mother from afar waste away from dementia in her last years in a super expensive ($8,000 to $9,000 USD) assisted living home - I definitely do not want to finish that way.

So, for a lot less money, I would prefer to waste away my last years living in a condo with some cute Thai guys who would take care of me and make those last years fun.
