And, guess what, row of machines, all working, to scan passport! Worked a treat.

Does that mean you have now an entry stamp but no departure stamp in your passport?

Yes, indeed.  I did think about that! I think there were only machines, so no choice. It's becoming  the norm.

Hmmm if you are a retiree who lives here in LOS Thailand those physical stamped in ink pages in your passport are critical at immigration when they want to access:

How many days were you physically  in Thailand?

If it was more than 90 days, did you do your 90 day report with immigration?

If not = pay penalty and/or fines

When I left Thailand last month to go to China it was also all automatic, no departure stamp in passport anymore. Only arrival stamp.

Maybe if you need one, you can get exit stamp at immigration office/officer?

Is that a UK airline ?

Actually, it's a ferry service. Takes a bit of time to get home, but never mind.... Slow boats to China etc.

I know.

This forum tends to be "I am on holiday in Thailand" centric

So, someone needs to speak up for us expat retirees who are also members of this forum about the implications of something that a tourist may take for granted and not realize the potential impact to a retiree who lives her in Thailand.

Indeed. I would like to assume that the various categories  are uploaded into the software, but this is Thailand! It could well be there was a manual stamping section, that is normal, just that I didn't see it! I was so excited to see the gleaming row of machines.  For a start some passports can't be machine read, and there has to be a back up if something  goes wrong, so I think that you are safe!

Really good questions!  Back in March, I got sick w/food poisoning at the end of my trip & ended up overstaying on my METV by 5 days.  When I departed at BKK, I was directed by the Immigration officer to the overstay desk where I paid a fine in cash ($50 US) & was allowed to go on my way.  What would happen with the automated system?  Would the software pick it up?

Let's hope you don't have to find out!
