TotallyOz Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 Well, the location is fantastic. There is no better place to sit and have drinks and watch the boys go by on this soi. I ordered the beef stroganoff. To say it was mediocre is an understatement. I should know better than to get a beef dish in an inexpensive place in Thailand. It was not a good dish. I then ordered a desert and it was a similar experience to the main dish. While I did not enjoy either dish, I did enjoy the view. The place has the perfect place to sit and watch. It is a people watching heaven. Quote
Guest Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 Last month I ate there three times, eating 2 different vegetarian dishes. The quality of the main dish was fine & it was also inexpensive. On all 3 visits I was offered rice with the dish, but it was not delivered on the last visit. The location is fine. Even in mid afternoon, you can flirt with the massage boys from next door & across the road. Quote
KhorTose Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Every time I go to Bangkok I make it a point to have one meal there. The food is just okay, but the prices are not that bad. When I first went in 2002 I do remember better food and several really great dishes that seem to have disappeared from the menu. However, I love watching the action in Soi Twilight, without being grabbed or hassled by doormen. It is like an Oasis of calm amidst all the incredible hustle and bustle of this soi. I love people watching (especially when the people are mostly cute young Thais), and Dicks is the perfect place for that Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 I had a pork cordon bleu there last week - and it was fine. Far from 'cordon bleu' standard, but I also go there to see rather than for the cuisine. Quote
Guest GaySacGuy Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 While it might not be the best place for food, the view is worth the price of admission. Also, they seem to do better with the Thai dishes than the American/European type food. I usually just get an order of fries and a drink, and enjoy the view!! Quote
Guest finally Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 Was there with my Thai mate last October. We both are not demanding customers , but the dishes were less than mediocre and the French fries were cold, obviously just from the fridge and impossible to eat. I (friendly) complained at the young farang manager. He did not even answer, just said "aha" and disappeared in the soi. NEVER again!!!!!!!!! Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 Was there with my Thai mate last October. I like Dick's for its location, and would never consider its cuisine much more than basic. But you may just have hit a bad time as I believe they reopened after a long refurbishment around that time. Perhaps the new staff had not been properly 'bedded down'. No excuse for bad service and cold food, of course. Quote
Jason1988 Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 When I am in Bangkok I often go to Dick's Cafe for dinner and watch the parade outside just as I would when in Pattaya go to Le Royale Cafe and do the same. Over the last two or three years Dicks Cafe's food and service has gone down the drain so to speak. Just before the end of 2010 I stopped in for a drink after doing some shopping. I ordered an orange juice and it was preserved and not fresh as it had been in previous visits. Two other times before leaving Bangkok I had a late lunch and dinner at the cafe. The Thai food has slipped a bit as well as some of the other dishes. The mixed salad was mostly cabbage and it was hard to find any lettuce. The tom ka gai was ordered spicy and was served as bland as warm milk. Again, the waiter forgot to bring rice and had to be reminded. On another visit I ordered a sandwich and it was simply awful! On two occasions one of the managers Markus and the newer younger Swiss boy that helps manage the Tarntawan Place Hotel was there and they both were gracious hosts. When I spoke to them about the problems with the food and drinks all I got was a smile from one and the other rolled his eyes. Turn the clock back a few years ago when I would spend more time in Bangkok I would come into Dick's Cafe in the morning and have a coffee and chat with some of the guys there. One of them would be busy making fresh orange juice, cutting and preparing the fruit for the bar service later in the day. The attitude was very positive then. Perhaps the death of Dick and his great management style has departed with him. That is really a shame. Nowadays, the focus is not on quality and I'm sorry to say that I may not be visiting Dick's Cafe as much as I used to. The Tarntawan Place Hotel is still one of my favorite places to stay but the "old girl" is really starting to show her age. But then again, aren't we all. Quote
Guest Thor69 Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 Something has gone horribly wrong there in the last few years. The quality of the food is more than likely the same but the presentation and the taste is virtually absent. If it weren't for the other entertainment in the area I would suggest spending your money in a better restaurant. If you are going there just to drink then enjoy the high. :-) Quote
