I did not know this.  I find this amazing.

Is this why I have such an affinity for Vietnam ?

The Thai people originated from Vietnam, where there are still original Thai people. Basically the Thai, Zhuang, Dai, Tay, Nung,Lao and Vietnamese people are all basically Kra-dai people, they may speak slightly different languages due to historical factors (influenced by China or India).

The Thai people then moved south and were influenced by Indian culture, they mixed with the natives and became the Thailand people today.

Thailand people also welcomed the wave of Chinese immigrants from China in the past.

DNA: Thai_Vietnam people are the indigenous Thai people of Vietnam. Basically Thai_Vietnam people can understand Thailand's and Laos language.
