Bare Feet on the Airplane

Recommended Posts

I was coming back from Cambodia recently and the plane was full. The business class was also full. When I got on I got to my seat and this older gentleman from UK sat beside me. He took off his shoes and then took off his socks and crossed his feet and pointed the bottom of his foot at me. I was shocked. I thought for a brief second and I took off my shoes and socks and then pointed my foot at him. He gasped as he saw my painted Xmas tree toenails. I had forgotten I did this with a friend. He almost had a heart attack. So, I took out a nail file from my bag and started to groom. Needless to say, he sat there the entire way and did not say a word and try to ride the side of the plane.

Now, is it really common for someone to go bare feet on a 45 minute flight? Was he just being rude? Was I out of line in following his direction? (no comments needed on my pretty toenails).

My first thought is that it he is lucky he failed to see the tatoo on your homo erectus. If painted toenails caused that kind of reaction, I am sure you would have been arrested for causing the man to die of a stroke.

On a different note, I think it is quite common to take your shoes off. Some airlines encourage shoe removal by giving you slippers. I do not think I would be comfortable with someone taking their socks off and I wonder why they would do that. I quess you should be thankful he did not have some kind of smelly foot fungus which can stink even with socks on.

As to the ethics, if he takes his socks off you have every right in my book to do the same.

This had me cracking up. Can't believe you did the same back to him in return with the painted nails and even "groomed" yourself. You nut case LOL.

Personally, I think bare feet is poor form. Shoes off is ok, but people should at least wear socks. It is not so hot on a plane that your feet are going to suffocate in socks. Sitting with your feet in someone's face is even worse. I think Singapore Airlines has/had "please keep your shoes on" as part of their routine announcement.

However, in your case, it's a perfectly acceptable act.

The floors of those planes are so cold. I can't imagine going with out socks.

Oh, I'm sure they have foot warmers or foot massages or something similarly filthy in business class. :p

I would never walk around bare foot in a plane and in particular go to the toilet.

It is well known in airline circles that cleaning staff do not have time to wash toilet floors, and at best it might get swept. I am not talking about missing one ot two flights but sometimes days and maybe weeks.

To walk in bare feet on toilet floors that someone has pissd on or worse makes me cringe.
