TotallyOz Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 Seeing that Charles Manson had a phone while in prison is very disturbing. I still remember the days when the trial was going on and I think it was my first loss of innocence. IMHO, anyone who is in prison should be there to be either rehabilitated or punished. In either case, the use of all cell phones should be blocked. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/12/03/AR2010120306793.html Quote
Bob Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 Yea, I never understood why prileges like that were ever allowed. It is supposed to be prison. Even if there is little deterrent to being deprived, at least there would be the punishment aspect. Quote
kokopelli Posted December 5, 2010 Posted December 5, 2010 Cell phones are not allowed in prisons for use by inmates. If they are there they have been smuggled in and likely by correction officers. Same is true for drugs, booze and cigarettes. Quote
Guest Posted December 5, 2010 Posted December 5, 2010 A device that blocks reception inside the prison should be easy to implement in today's world. And the punishment for those having them or drugs or other illegal contraband should be more severe. IMHO Quote
Guest beachlover Posted December 5, 2010 Posted December 5, 2010 Mobile phones for prisoners? I didn't know this was the norm... Quote
kokopelli Posted December 5, 2010 Posted December 5, 2010 Mobile phones for prisoners? I didn't know this was the norm... It is not the norm, it is the abnormal. I have had occasion to visit in prisons and cell phones are not allowed by visitors or inmates. Violations are punished by putting the offender in the "hole". Quote
Guest beachlover Posted December 6, 2010 Posted December 6, 2010 The first and second post gave me the impression the privilege of a mobile phone was sanctioned by the guards. Actually, having seen the article it sounds like the same situation, which occurs in Australia. Mobile phones are smuggled in as contraband. The point of the article is they are thinking of making it illegal to have possession of one in prison, which I suppose, would mean those caught face charges/conviction of more crimes and more time. kokopelli Posted December 6, 2010 Posted December 6, 2010 Banning cell phones by law is about the same as banning judges in the USA from applying Shia/Sharia law to US constitutional law. Just some politician doing what they do best, nothing worthwhile. Quote

They are already contraband like drugs, alcohol, weapons, etc. But, as long as there are guards wanting to make some extra money, these thing will find their way into the prisons. Quote
