Olddaddy Posted September 15 Posted September 15 As we know this younger generation are glued to their phones taking pics and selfies with everything. My younger bf in Australia 🇦🇺takes videos & selfies of his Friday night Dance Club dancing🕺🏿 and it's encouraged by the nightclub to take pics for the best pic award 📷 So he sent me a short video last Friday night where everyone was dancing and yes you guessed it ,they're all holding their phones📳 looking at themselves...dancing 🤣 So my concern to him is to be a bit cautious taking pics in Pattaya , particular in the bar areas , because it's OLDies like me ( over 60) who are grumpy ,not used to it etc and some of us in our age group are paranoid and go off in a tantrum especially if he is taking a selfie standing in front of a bar Omg I'm in a picture someone will probably shout 😱 I recall last year though a few middle aged farangs ,(younger than me) ,taking pics of the Gay PRIDE in Pattaya and a few sour old puss's (my age over 60) ) were commenting about how "despicable" this was .😟 But I think it's time to Get with the times If you don't want to be on someones picture stay home it's 2024,you can't expect people especially the younger generation not to take pics if their outings just because you could be in it 🙄 Of course at a Gay PRIDE🏳️🌈🏳️🌈 your going to have to expect photography There's CCTV everywhere now anyway Quote
macaroni21 Posted September 16 Posted September 16 An emerging issue is that of deep fakes; especially pornography. It is now possible through technology to use any face captured in photos and paste it onto other bodies in a pornographic video. I haven't myself seen the output, but I have read that the result is so seamless that it's almost impossible to tell that the video has been manipulated. Such manipulation is often used to humiliate the target person, and unsurprisingly, young women are the chief victims. The problem of course is that however much the victim protests or succeeds in taking down the first video, copies would have spread far and wide. Our resident AI expert @Moses may be able to give us more insight into this trend. Ruthrieston 1 Quote
Members unicorn Posted September 16 Members Posted September 16 Well, if you're well into your 60s, I'm not sure where the concern would be unless you're married to a woman who's unaware. In terms of work, you're likely to be either in or close to retirement. If your parents are still around, it's unlikely they'll care. Maybe if your parents are well into their 80s and they might disinherit you if they find out? Olddaddy 1 Quote

reader Posted September 16 Posted September 16 Although not directly related to photography, this warning was issued by the FBI regarding dangers posed by commercial phone charging ports: The FBI issued a warning against using free public phone charges, saying they could give hackers direct access to phones, tablets, or computers. The bureau warned that “bad actors” could use the charging portals to install malware and tracking software onto electronic devices. “Avoid using free charging stations in airports, hotels or shopping centers,” FBI tweeted. “Carry your own charger and USB cord and use an electrical outlet instead.” Quote
macaroni21 Posted September 16 Posted September 16 Yes, I have heard this warning too. However, I think that the FBI warning (as relayed by others) is poorly phrased. I am told that the risk is with using a USB port to charge your device, because the USB is equally capable of transferring data. If you use an old-fashioned electrical plug, there won't be this risk. I am not sure if free or not free makes all that much difference. Apparently using the USB port in your hotel room can be just as risky, but you've paid for the room anyway. Quote

The FBI advice is clear: Use your own charger, cable and use an electrical socket. All three must be used to maximise safety. You are right, the data transfer capabilities of the cable can be used to inject spyware or malware on to your device if you plug the cable into a compromised port - whether thats a charger plug you've borrowed, or a public USB port. However, USB Cables themselves are not safe. They can contain a computer chip that injects spyware into your device when plugged in. Use your own charging equipment, and preferably bought from a reputable supplier. vinapu 1 Quote
