TotallyOz Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 The very lowest (according to Delta) that one can get a upgradeable fare to gay old Thailand is 3200 USD if you plane departs from the USA. Even those fares are hard to come by and most of them are in the 3600 UDS range. For that rate, it is almost just as cheap to buy a full First Class on Thai Air out of LA. They were recently going for around 4,000 USD. With planes being packed for the holiday and a busy expected high season, if you want an upgradeable fare, it is best to book as far in advance as you can. Also, the new Delta website sucks. If one can find a way to search for upgradable fares, please let me know. I have yet to find it on the new site but the old Northwest site was very easy and the tickets could be easily purchased online. Quote
lexusgs Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 GT, You really should stop messing about with US Airlines. If you really want an outstanding experience fly this way. Longer trip but so superior and great quality. Also they have a very generous awards program. Twice daily from JFK http://www.emirates.com/english/flying/cabin_features/first_class/new_private_suites.aspx Quote

I am going to give it a try in 2011. I appreciate the vote of confidence. I am getting so tired of Delta and have not found any other airline that will go where I want other than United/Continental. I just checked multiple days 3 and 4 months out. Travel any day of week. Business Class $10,000. This is Business not First. Are they out of their minds???? Quote

Most normal people have to get value for their money and many airlines have a perfectly fine Business Class available with a little work for $4-$5000. Only someone who is using someone elses money or is filthy rich would pay $10,000 for a business class ticket. I shutter to think the price of a First Class ticket. Quote

Now it is necessary to pick a date and call to speak with a rep to book a flight. And, yes, $3000+ and 50,000 miles for round trip. My only thought is to switch to Thai Air out of LA. Start with Premium Economy; earn some miles and then upgrade to Business Class. Quote

Actually I believe you can upgrade from economy to Business for the same miles as if you were in Premium Economy. I know the last time I called to upgrade to Premium and then use CERT to upgrade to Business. I was told no need just go from economy to Business no extra. Its just now the price of Premium Economy and then a ticket to the East Coast , makes it similar to the $3200 on Delta if you can find it and then use miles to upgrade and have Business for the whole trip. There are no deals anymore I am afraid??? Quote
Guest Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 Actually I believe you can upgrade from economy to Business for the same miles as if you were in Premium Economy. That is correct and what I have done with my Gold certificate each time I have gotten one. Firecat is also right in that Thai is great rates if you live in LA or close by. To take another carrier to LA and then connect with Thai is a real PITA. A few trips back I booked with Thai Air and used Continental Airline to connect out of Dallas. The cost was over 500 for the add on which I can deal with OK. But, I then had to get all my luggage out at LAX and then walk it over to Thai Air terminal. That is another PITA. I tried on the most recent trip to book with Thai out of Dallas. For Premium Economy and using on of their partners from Dallas or Houston it was going to cost 2800. Thai told me to call their partners directly and they would be able to do it for cheaper. They were NOT able to do this for cheaper. Their cost was over 3,000. I was then told to use a travel agent. I called 4 agents. I told all 4 of them what I wanted over a 5 day period of time. Not one travel agent returned my call. I was asking for a connection and then Premium Economy on Thai. I can't figure out why they were not interested in booking a ticket but was told that they don't make much money on booking airlines any longer. I was also told by both Continental and United that if you book with them and their plane is late that it is up to Thai to make amends for a rebook and not their airline as they are not the cross ocean carrier. I don't think this to be true but that was the conversation. In the end, I stuck with Delta and paid a higher price for the convenience. Problem for me is most of my trips will now originate out of Texas and American Airlines rules Texas and I have no status with them. Quote
kokopelli Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 Actually I believe you can upgrade from economy to Business for the same miles as if you were in Premium Economy. Are we speaking of Thai Air? If so the miles needed for an upgrade from Prem.Economy to Royal Silk (Business Class) is 35,000/one way. Upgrades from Economy to Business range from 46,000 to 81,000/one way. I found this info on Thai Air website. Correct me if I am wrong. Yes, getting to LAX is the hitch when using Thai Air. One option is to use a partner airline like USAirways which allows you to accumulate miles on Thai plus allows you to check bags all the way through to BKK via LAX. For GT, Delta claims they will improve website in 2011 to allow on-line booking of upgrades to Business same as was with NorthWest. Quote

Actually Firecat 72% of Emirates passengers are non arabs so you must not generalise my friend Trust me there is a huge difference in product and quality. Most of the legacy carriers in Europe and the US simply cannot afford to upgrade their aircraft. Thai is in a similar position with outdated aircraft. I've flown with them all so I think my opinion is quite valid Quote

For me I don't care what the product is . For that amount of money , they should provide a private room and 2 cute boys and even then it would not be worth it to me. The actual price to fly me there is an economy fare of $1200. That means I am paying $9000 for a bigger seat and some fancier food. Or I could go First Class and pay $16,000 . Now let's see for $16,000 I can rent a LUXURY Serviced apartment in Bangkok on the River for 1 year. And by the way for this ridiculous amount of money you get to have a 15 hour stopover (I guess in Dubai) Just what I really want to do on my way to Thailand. And you may be right that 72% of the customers are Non Arab but I would be willing to bet that 95% of the customers are not paying for their own tickets. They are being paid by the stockholders of the Companies that choose to pay those exorbitant fares. Quote

After 2-3 days getting to know the company he declined the job. The company must've spent at least $15k all up getting him there and looking after him. Quote
