Guest travelerjim Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 Thai Immigration now says there will be JAIL TIME for overstays http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/400387-thai-immigration-introduces-jail-time-for-overstayers/ BANGKOK (thaivisa.com): -- Allegedly tired of overstaying foreigners arriving at Suvarnabhumi airport with a valid air ticket and the maximum fine of 20,000 baht in their hands, the Immigration Department is now arresting and jailing people before permitting them to leave Thailand. Anybody who has overstayed a valid visa in Thailand beyond a period of six weeks (42 days) is no longer permitted to simply turn up with the cash and an air ticket and leave the country after filling in a few forms and handing over the wedge. read more.. http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/400387-thai-immigration-introduces-jail-time-for-overstayers/ tj Quote
payless Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 I think that his topic should be titled "that it is reported that" 'Thai Immigration says JAIL TIME' I don't think Immigration has published anything along these lines. It is just possibly the local rags (Phuket and Pattaya local newspapers) sensationalizing a bit of gossip. Thai Visa lifts a lot of its 'news' from Pattaya One and other News sources and does not seem to immediately verify the info before broadcasting. Quote
Guest Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 The News Breaks sent out by Thai Visa are only meant to draw people to their site and make money for them. They don't care to verify these stories at all. The more outrageous the title sounds, the more hits and thus the more money. It is pretty simple. I would always wait for a verifiable news source, Bangkok Post, AP, etc before worrying about a news flash from Thai Visa. IMHO Quote
Guest Posted September 26, 2010 Posted September 26, 2010 Phuket immigration chief said this report is false. Quote
Guest joseph44 Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 Finally someone who warns to read between the lines of ThaiVisa news. Especially the moderation of the "visa and law"-section of ThaiVisa needs professional attention. A load of crap was launched over the past years. Basically, there are no new rules, the immigration act is from 2522 (1979). Everybody who get caught on overstay, will be detained until the fine (max. THB 20,000) and a return ticket to the offender's homecountry can be presented. Depending on the length of overstay and the number of occassions, the offender may be added to the list of persona-non-grata. If you leave the country with an overstay, with a ticket in your hand and the fine to be paid, there is no reason to detain people and the only thing that is left the persona-non-grata thing, which can be settled without the offender being present.
