I also like Agoda. I have used them several times with no complaints whatsoever. The rewards system is good too.

Fot Thailand direct deal with hotels bring me best prices,

for Cambodia I use angkorhotelsguide.com - they have up to 45% discounts from gay or gay-friendly hotels in Siem Reap,

for rest asian countries I use agoda.com,

for Europe and Middle East - booking.com

I agree that agoda.com is probably the best overall. You have to be a little careful, though. LIke many booking sites, the tax and/or service charge is usually not included in the first price you see. It is added later on the page when you are asked to provide your personal details. So make sure you know exactly what you will be paying.

There is another good site that saves you checking a lot of different sites -

http://www.hotelscombined.com/

This basically compares rates at up to a dozen sites and gives you these all on one page. Again, make sure you check where and when the tax/service charge appears.

The only advice I can give you is this - from a previous Executive Manager at the Oriental here in Bangkok (now the Mandarin Oriental). We were having drinks in the lobby late one night when a farang and a bar girl came in. The girl was dressed as one would expect a bar girl to dress on being taken out - i.e. in the clothes she wore on the way to work. Security were on to them like a hawk. There was a short discussion after which they were politely shown to the door and the man got a taxi for the girl.

I asked my friend if this is a hard and fast rule. He said it depends very much on circumstances. If the guest is reasonably well dressed - i.e. no flip flops, tank top etc. - and, more importantly, the boy is reasonably well-dressed (in other words, he looks as though he might be a guest), security had instructions to let the pair go upstairs. If the boy looked too obviously like a bar boy , he would definitely not be allowed in.

Because of the heightened security situation in Bangkok, I have a feeling that many of the 5-star hotels adopt more or less a similar policy. The Four Seasons certainly does. This evening I was at Le Meridien for dinner and it seemed anyone could have walked in. But the lifts to the restaurants are close to the entrance. Those to the rooms are further away after reception and I do not know what the security presence would have been there.

In the hours up to mid-evening, I think you can get anyone up to your room. Thereafter, if you are with a nicely dressed escort/gay romeo boy and you are chatting to him as you enter as though you are friends, I think you should have few problems in most hotels. The one caveat, though, is age difference. If there is a very obvious and major age difference, you might find security asking questions. In that event, having paid for two people will not help as Thai law says people staying in rooms have to be registered.

Sorry, I have no idea if you can register someone late at night unless you have given the reception his name at the time you checked in. That of course would then limit you to just one room guest!

That's one thing I dislike about Agoda.

The tax/service charge varies from country to country, but for Thailand it is quite substantial. I noticed it was around 17% of the price displayed on the first page. You have to click the "book now" button to see this.

Otherwise, Agoda has been good. But I always book direct with the hotel, if they will match Agoda's price.

I never had an issue bringing a boy back to one of the top hotels and have never been stopped or asked to pay a joiners fee. But there's never been much of an age difference between me and my partners and they were always reasonably well dressed (think what any boy would wear to go out clubbing)... all we get is wais and smiles.

I also prefer booking direct if the price is the same. But sometimes it is not. I wanted to extend a stay and the front desk advided that I should extend thru Agoda as the hotel could not offer that same price.

Seems strange as by dealing direct with me the hotel cutsout the Agoada commision but TIT.

Yeah, earlier on (maybe 2 years ago?) I had problems getting hotels to match the price offered by online booking sites (I was using AsiaRooms back then but they are crap now).

But now I don't seem to have that problem. In the last few bookings I made they matched whatever price was offered by Agoda. In some cases I was even able to negotiate and get extras like internet included... Maybe some of them have come to their senses.

It really has nothing to do with "TIT". How these discounters work is they buy blocks of rooms at discounted prices from the hotels. If they sell them they make a profit. The hotels already have their money for those rooms, so it doesn't matter to them if those rooms are sold or not.

I also used Asia Rooms almost exclusive for years and they had some great rates, I have no idea why the site has gone downhill. It looks much better than before but the rates really are way below most other sites.

It pays to "shop around"...and compare rates.

I have used many websites:

Agoda, Asia Rooms, Booking.com, Orbitz, Expedia,

Hotels.com, the hotels own websites, airline websites,

and have called the hotel directly after I have researched prices.

When booking hotel in NYC, the best deal was from booking.com.

My bf and I stayed at Clarion Park Ave South for $103. nightly midweek and

$123. night for weekend. Great customer service via booking.com as we..

So wouldn't that give a hotel even more of an incentive to give a walk in the discounted rate as then hey would make money from both me and also the empty room?

I agree. The old AsiaRooms website was ugly but it was easier to use (than the current one) and always had the best rates/deals! Almost every rate I looked up would include breakfast and would beat what anyone else was offering.

The new site looks prettier but (1) isn't has appealing or easy to use and (2) doesn't offer such good rates anymore. A real shame...
