Guest travelerjim Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 Friends, I have walked past the Ocean Cafe without stopping many times on my way to and from Jomtien Beach and Dongtan Beach walkway. Ocean Cafe is located next door to the 7-11 at the corner across from the Police Box at Jomtien Beach. Nearly new, it is NO Smoking - comfortable and the inside dining room is air conditioned. An outside front entry patio has tables for smokers and non-smokers. Currently they are offering ALL BREAKFASTS from the nice and colorful menu for 99 Thai baht! including (depending on selected breakfast) eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, butter, jam and fresh brewed coffee. Normally 120-140 baht. See the promo sign in front of Ocean Cafe. I have enjoyed the English Breakfast twice...99 baht - usually 140 baht. and the American breakfast ...99 baht - usually 120 baht. They also have a special Chicken Sandwich with chips for 99 baht... great for lunch or dinner. Oher sandwich specials are also on offer. Open from 8:00am til 8:00pm. Staffed by good Waiter and excellent Cook. Enjoy! It is a great place to have breakfast, lunch or dinner. Serves full menu of teas, coffees, beverages, croissants, and ice cream dishes - including Banana Splits. tj Quote
Guest beachlover Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 That looks like one of the Western breakfasts they serve in 3-4 star hotels in Thailand... I wish they'd be a bit more imaginative and serve some hash browns, smoked salmon, eggs benedict, yogurt drizzled on fresh fruit, grilled mushrooms or an omelet. Whenever I see something like that at a hotel breakfast buffet, I always go for the Thai stuff (fried noodles or fried rice) instead. Quote

You make a lot of posts on this or GB's site about hotels, beachlover. And sometimes you make remarks like the above which make me wonder what hotels you have actually stayed at during your travels - and where. The photos are of a cafe serving a basic inexpensive breakfast at a price few hotels will match. Most 3 - 4 star hotels in Thailand serve a buffet breakfast with an egg station where you can have eggs made to order. Failing that, they will have egg dishes in heated containers, plus hash browns and various other dishes. In virtually every hotel I have stayed around the country in those categories, you can certainly get omelettes, but perhaps not eggs benedict. All have fresh fruit and I'd reckon 95%+ have yoghurt. They may not mix it on the fruit, but surely you are wide enough awake in the morning to do that for yourself Perhaps you can give us a list of some of the 3 -4 star hotels around Thailand in which you have stayed - and inform us of which ones did not serve a breakfast to your liking? It is a very nice presentation, as well. Reminds me of the 99 cent breakfast Monty use to have, but better. Quote
Guest lvdkeyes Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 We had breakfast there this morning and I can highly recommend it. The food was tasty and well presented. I ordered English breakfast because I like English sausage, but I don't like beans for breakfast. They gladly made a substitution for me. Guess what it was - hash browns. Quote
Guest beachlover Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 You make a lot of posts on this or GB's site about hotels, beachlover. And sometimes you make remarks like the above which make me wonder what hotels you have actually stayed at during your travels - and where. Oh, I've stayed in all kinds... From 400 baht/night dumps to 5-star hotels. In virtually every hotel I have stayed around the country in those categories, you can certainly get omelettes Really? Only one I've had omelettes from is the Royal Paradise in Phuket. All the other places had scrambled eggs in a tray. One place, the Patong Bay Garden, had an egg station. I don't know... I've always been disappointed with the clinical blandness of Western breakfasts at anything other than 5-star hotels in Thailand in most cases... So when I see that, I just go with the Thai noodles or fried rice instead... usually tasty and much better. You're right, for 99 baht ($3.50) it is not bad. Quote
Moses Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 How is coffee in this cafe? It is easy to find good breakfast in Pattaya but still is hard to find place with good espresso or ristretto... By the way: just behind this building - in DD Inn - cook extremely tasty Khao Pad (grilled thai rice with eggs and pork/beef/chicken) - I highly recommend to visit DD Inn for it, but at the same time i suggest not to order coffee there (it's unbelievable bad)... Quote
Guest lvdkeyes Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 I can't speak for the coffee as I usually drink tea for breakfast. Getting good coffee outside of Starbucks and Black Canyon is not easy here. Quote
PattayaMale Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 The other day I was driving to my house going down Third Road. Almost across from the fire station was a sign, "Fish and Chips-Village Chipper". I like fish and chips so I turned to see what the place was like. Right next to it was another place (with a cute waiter). After I visited the Village Chipper, I went next door and ordered a diet coke, I asked the waiter for a menu and saw that they had an American breakfast for 70 baht. I went the next morning and had breakfast. It was very good. The point is, that breakfast is an inexpensive meal to make. So 99 baht may seem like a good deal since many really overcharge. Even in the USA, a simple breakfast of eggs, bacon, toast, and coffee can be bought for $1.49. Quote

Because you have a habit in many of your posts of making assertions which you do not then back up with facts. The value of a site like this is that posters provide factual information that can be of help to others in making decisions where to travel and in which hotels to stay. In your earlier post, you specified 3-star and 4-star hotels. With respect, these are neither "dumps" nor "5-star hotels". So may I ask again for some of the hotels in the 3- and 4-star brackets where you have stayed and where you have found my statement above to be untrue? This was, you'll recall - Most 3 - 4 star hotels in Thailand serve a buffet breakfast with an egg station where you can have eggs made to order. I am simply curious, as I think are some other posters, as I would wish to avoid such hotels referred to by you. And your other habit is, when asked for detail, as you have done in this latest reply to make a quick generalisation and then switch tack. I really am interested to hear of your specific experiences as requested. Thank you. Quote
Moses Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 Getting good coffee outside of Starbucks and Black Canyon is not easy here. coffee in Starbucks in Pattaya is total bullshit - at least in one, which is located at Beach rd. close to BoysTown... they use 1-year old blend with smell of dust, but not smell of coffee Quote

Maybe in the year 1949 but today you are lucky to get a cup of coffee for $1.49. Quote

Even in the USA, a simple breakfast of eggs, bacon, toast, and coffee can be bought for $1.49. I don't disagree it's an inexpensive meal to make. But $1.49?? LOL. I can't even get a coffee for that in Australia (though I'm sure $1.50 coffees exist somewhere). Eggs/bacon/toast/coffee... I've never seen that for less than $6 or $7. But I asked for a list. I don't particularly feel like dragging up a complete 'list' of hotels I've stayed at thank you. I visit this forum for fun... not to answer aggressive demands for details or spend hours counting posts to prove a point. I also said I had stayed in a range of hotels ranging from budget to 5-stars. Not the two categories with the one in between excluded. Getting good coffee outside of Starbucks and Black Canyon is not easy here. Starbucks? Have they changed their coffee lately? I tried Starbucks in Phuket a couple of months ago. It tasted like paper. Starbucks had to close 61 out of 84 of their stores in Australia last year... most people reckon it was because their coffee is simply sh*t. Quote

I frequent the Starbucks at TukCom - on South Pattaya Rd across from Centre Condos. I enjoy their coffee there, as I read the Nation, Bangkok Post and International Herald Tribune. The TukCom location has FREE wireless as the entire TukCom building is wireless. tj Quote
Guest lvdkeyes Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 You can't even get a bottle of water in OZ for $1.49. The cheapest we found was $2.50AUD. Quote

I visit this forum for fun... not to answer aggressive demands for details or spend hours counting posts to prove a point. There you go! On the defensive yet again. Let's be clear. My post was neither "aggressive" nor a "demand". It was a polite request. The fact that you will not provide specific information all but confirms the concern I have expressed. And let's remember: I did not raise the issue of what is served in 3- and 4-star hotels. You did. Perhaps you simply fail to realise that the more you make bland assertions without facts to back them up, the more it increases doubts about the veracity of those assertions. And you have already made quite a volume of such unsubstantiated claims on this Board and on GB's Board. Facts in future, please. Quote
Guest beachlover Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 Fountainhall, I'm going to disregard your request. Other than complying with moderator requests, I'm not going to have another member dictate what I should post in the future. Particularly one who has tried to find any and every excuse possible to attack me since I joined this forum. This is an informal forum. Not an encyclopedia or medical conference. Members have always been free to post observations, opinions and general comments. Some of my posts fall into this category. Others fall into the category of factual statements. As for being on the defensive, is there something wrong with that? Were you any different when I politely asked you to reveal the results of your post count? No. But I respect and accept your decision not to reveal them. I never called your reasons for not revealing them "lame" or "chicken" or made public assumptions, stated as fact about the reasons behind your decision. Let's not forget some sweeping generalisations you've made yourself: Oh! For goodness sake! You make it sound as though it's a major mental exercise. It's the simplest thing in the world. Checking posts made within a certain period is almost child's play. Followed by this contradicting statement: The process took me about 90 minutes or so this morning Not to mention an assumption you stated as fact: You decline the wager because you realise your statement was probably inaccurate. Guest travelerjim Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 May I say? Please fellas...this thread was about the Ocean Cafe... a great place for breakfasts which I enjoyed and wanted to share with you. I am just a guilty as others in remarking about the Starbucks... or NO Starbucks - which has now closed near Boyztown - on Beach Rd. I will try not to highjack my own thread ... but as for yours? Well....All is fair game tj Quote
Guest beachlover Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 Sorry TJ... Perhaps I should posted replies to FH on another thread. FH, a suggestion... Perhaps you could start a new thread and put all your posts attacking me there. Feel free to call it "beachlover bashing" or whatever you feel is right. Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 FH, a suggestion... Perhaps you could start a new thread and put all your posts attacking me there. Feel free to call it "beachlover bashing" or whatever you feel is right. Such a thread would be overly long and overly repetitive. What I will do - until stopped by a moderator - is question every bland assertion made on the Board that is merely thrown off as "fun" and not backed up by the addition of some relevant facts. Anyone who has not visited Thailand may take your assertion as fact, that “that looks like one of the Western breakfasts they serve in 3-4 star hotels in Thailand... I wish they'd be a bit more imaginative and serve some hash browns, smoked salmon, eggs benedict, yogurt drizzled on fresh fruit, grilled mushrooms or an omelet,” and therefore be put off staying at 3- or 4-star hotels – or at least from taking advantage of a rate that is inclusive of breakfast. Such ill-formed assertions therefore are a disservice to potential new posters. Fact! Let me tell you another reason for my concern about your posts. You told us on another thread today (Do you sleep with guys your own age?) - But as I've approached my mid-twenties, I've found . . . So it is reasonable to suppose that you are around 24. Yet on this Board and GB's Board you give us details of all your travel experiences around Asia. You have stated that in relation to hotels you stay in when you come to Bangkok - The three I tend to use:Sofitel Silom Dusit Thani Le Meridian Bangkok Well, we also know that you stayed at the Narai about 2 years ago, because you told us that. Further as a frequent gay visitor to our shores who likes to stay in 5-star hotels, you had never heard of the Sukhothai Hotel, which is virtual cruise central for up-market gays. And then when it comes to nightlife, you asked about the Bedtime Supper Club. You then add "Not too many locals." This, despite the fact that the Club is called the Bed Supper Club and is packed with locals every night of the week. Add to that little lot your statement on this Board that the time difference between Sydney and Bangkok is 2/3 hours when anyone who has done the trip more than once knows that it is 3/4 hours. (Do I need to post the exact quote?) So I trust you are beginning to get my drift, Mr beachlover. You may be the nicest guy in the world, for all I know. Your 'facts', however, are distinctly on the dodgy side. Quote
Guest beachlover Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 Fountainhall, if you haven't the decency to start a new thread, I will. Look for the thread titled, "Fountainhall's concerns". Quote
Jason1988 Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 The point is, that breakfast is an inexpensive meal to make. So 99 baht may seem like a good deal since many really overcharge. Even in the USA, a simple breakfast of eggs, bacon, toast, and coffee can be bought for $1.49. I live in the USA 6 months out of the year. I haven't seen any breakfasts for $1.49 in many, many years. in fact, most places get more than $1.49 for a cup of their "dishwater" coffee. Most breakfast places charge about $10.00 plus the cost of a cup of coffee. And, juice is an option at extra cost. Quote
Guest lvdkeyes Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 We had breakfast this morning at Dusit Thani. My bf has pork fried rice with fried egg and tea, I had what the menu said was English breakfast (2 fried eggs on toast with 2 strips of streaky bacon, a grilled tomato, mushrooms in place of beans and 2 small disgusting Thai hot dogs, not English sausage and coffee.) The bill was 800 baht which included 10% service. The meal was average at best. I would much rather eat at the Ocean Cafe where English breakfast had real English sausage for 1/4 of the cost. You can keep your 4-5 star hotel breakfasts. Quote
Guest beachlover Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 Was that DT in Pattaya or Bangkok? I usually have the breakfast if it is included in the room cost. I don't pay for it separately... I think in Bangkok the breakfast buffet is somewhere between 600-800 baht per person... not worth doing daily, if you have to pay separately for it... but if you're going there for breakfast, just go the whole hog and get the buffet. I couldn't fault it. Quote
Guest lvdkeyes Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 It was in Pattaya, not that it matters. I was there to go to the US Embassy Outreach and had time to kill is the only reason I ate there. We didn't have the buffet, but ordered a la carte. Quote
