Fiefdoms is an apt choice of word, because SE Asia sometimes function like a feudalistic state. I find that a useful way to think about the militaries in SE Asia, are that they are functioning as states within a state. They are designed to ensure their own survival and to ensure that they can eat even if the people starve. The Thai army is sophisticated and can steer politics in their wished direction without being too crude.
