Guest irish1972 Posted October 4, 2006 Share Posted October 4, 2006 With all the talk about Visas and money needed before appyling for a Retirement Visa, I was just wondering what you guys believe is a suitable amount of money to retire on and move to Thailand. Obviously age and Pension need to be taken into account and at 34 it is not a consideration for me at the moment, but it does interest me to know how much it costs per month to live there as oppossed to going on a 2 or 3 week trip and blowing a small fortune. That question is nearly impossible to answer. There are too many variables. It depends on how much you're going to spend for a place to live, your lifestyle, your food and entertainment choices, transportation, utilities and telephone, medical expenses, etc. The only way I can think of to even come close to answering your question would be to say that I wouldn't want to try it on less than US $2000 per month. Even that depends on the individual. Many of my friends love to go to the bars virtually every night. For me, I rarely go to the bars at all anymore and when I do go, I rarely stay very long. Can you imagine? I'm actually bored with the bar scene. I never thought that would happen, but there it is. As far as the restaurants go, I rarely eat at home. I'm not exactly a gourmet chef and I don't enjoy cooking very much and I enjoy cleaning the pots, pans, and dishes even less. I don't eat at the expensive restaurants very often, but I do eat out most of the time. There are so many good restaurants in Pattaya you can literally choose how much you wish to spend on food. Another thing: If you end up with a boyfriend, especially if he eventually lives with you, that's going to be a big expense too. Guest Boxer Posted October 5, 2006 Share Posted October 5, 2006 A couple of years ago i lived well on 750000 baht per year with inflation and price rises it is now over 1.1 million a year excluding heavy medical bills but including all other costs. However, I also spent the first couple of months as if I were on vacation. I also lived in hotels most of the time. Based on my own level of comfort and spending habits, I would not try to live in LOS for less than 120,000 baht per month. However, if one did not spend much in bars or on boys, then I think 80,000 baht per month would be a decent sum for a nice standard of living.
