Does anyone know the Poppa Palace Hotel Patong, Phuket?

It is very near "boystown".

Is it gayfriendly?

The website is: www.poppapalace.com

I can tell you that the hotel is within walking distance of "The Paradise Complex" which is the major gay go-go and show bar area....probably could call it Phuket's "Boystown".

As far as gay friendly..no idea. I have spent quit a bit of time in Phuket among gays, and have never heard it mentioned. Personally, I would look at Club One Seven is you like a nice Gay friendly hotel.

It looks ok. It's a budget/mid tier hotel. Ideal location, midway between the Paradise Complex and the beach.

I'm pretty sure they charge extra for internet access though.

And none of their rooms have a good work desk, which rules it out for me.

That's a must for me in any place I stay... doesn't matter how nice or how crap it is.

I've turned down 5-star hotels for more mid-tier places just because the room, despite being 'nicer' just didn't have a decent work desk (not some little bench attached to the wall)... e.g. Holiday Inn, Phuket, lovely rooms and facilities, but no decent desk!. I just don't get why more hotels don't get this right... but at least most do.

Maybe a lot of hotels in tourist areas have found that a work desk is a really low priority for most of their customers.

Pooper Palace I have not heard of, but some friends keep telling me the best deal in Phuket and A small Hotel with Big Rooms and is Gay owned and run, it is called Siam Hotel, it has everything the larger Hotels have footsteps from the Beach, but only cost from 550 a night, give it a go, you can't go wrong at that Price, if you speak to Tim the Owner, he will make you feel so happy and gay, as if you Have come to a friends Party.

There is another post about it here, its such good value.

Fair enough for a budget hotel... but not good for a high-end hotel.

I think there's a better profile of the place here: http://www.phuketdir.com/siamhotel/

It looks like an "ok" deal, but nothing special at all. Lowest listed price is actually 600/night.

It's bloody ages from the beach, at least a 15-minute walk. It's actually BEHIND the Junceylon shopping centre, further from the beach than the Paradise Complex is. Rooms are ok, but nothing special.

You get what you pay for... 600 baht/night is ok for the place. But from 650 baht you can get a room at a place like the Bird Cage Guesthouse, for example, which is only a 2 minute walk to the beach and pretty much opposite the gay complex too.

The question was "Is it gay friendly"? Not whether it has a work desk or not.

Considering Siam Hotel owned and Run by Gays, what do you think, blink.gif

it more like a British friendly run hotel where the owner can chat to you and direct you in the right Direction if you ask any hotel for a deal your get one dont worry. my friends paid 550 baht. but if you wnat abbetter room pay more by all means

Nothing about it is not gay friendly, as far as I know.

It's a 2-3 minute walk to the Paradise Complex and 2 minute to the beach as well so the positioning is pretty good. It's just on a back street (or alleyway) so not as prominently positioned as some other hotels, but I don't think there's any disadvantage to this.

Everyone I know who goes to a guy hotel in a gay resort must have a work desk.

Heh... I once booked a hotel room, which didn't have any sort of decent desk in the room I got, even though the image on the website clearly showed one... I nicked a desk from the restaurant instead.

I'm glad that you have your priorities straight. Got to have a work desk and NO Clutter.

Yes, I have. Maybe I should've mentioned this above.

There is nothing gay "unfriendly" about the Poppa Palace... it's as gay friendly as most other hotels in Thailand. Don't know if there are joiners fees because I didn't bring anyone back, but I doubt there would be.

There seem to be a heap of other hotels and guesthouses popping up around it. Check out the "Pacific Lite" hotel (I think that's the name). I've never stayed there but it's in the same alley as Poppa Palace and looks very similar in standards (new fittings, clean, bright, decent sized rooms but pretty sparse).

I've also stayed at the Royal Paradise... This is a bit further from the beach (it's right overlooking the gay area) but I found it quite nice because it was high up and had a fantastic view of Patong Beach. I was working those couple of days so it was nice doing this with a view.

Make sure you get one of the newly renovated rooms (deluxe or better) because some of the rooms are quite old. There are two wings (forget what they were called)... make sure you're in the wing, which is the main building, not the short building surrounding the pool. Note that the pool is crap... nothing like the photos on the website... too small to swim laps.

HeyGay... Even the map YOU posted indicates it's at least two blocks from the beach LOL.

Actually it's 2.5 blocks. And we're not talking about two blocks of ordinary sois here. It's two MAIN ROADS from the beach. At least 15 minutes of walking. Think of how long it takes to walk from Paradise Complex to the beach and add another 5 minutes because the hotel is actually further from it than the complex.

I'm not out to cause any problems for this gay hotel at all. It looks fine to me. I just wanted to say there was nothing amazingly special about the price... you get what you pay for.

If you wanted to sell it, you might describe how great the service is or how comfortable the rooms were... rather than presenting false facts about it being one block from the beach.

No, it's definitely not a gay hotel... but that doesn't mean it's not "gay friendly" as most hotels in Thailand are.

There also doesn't seem to be many families staying there (which I know some gay people are self-conscious around)... mainly couples and single guys (and their Thai companions).
