Guest travelerjim Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 How to know when it's time to diet? Both GT and Pattaya Male...among other notable members are getting into shape....Good for them! Here is story in today's paper... Pattaya Daily News has the scoop! http://www.pattayadailynews.com/en/2010/08/14/how-to-know-when-it%E2%80%99s-time-to-diet/ tj Quote
Guest beachlover Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 I don't get why people let themselves get overweight. Sometimes I look at people who are really overweight and wonder how badly that must impact on their quality of life and why they don't do something effective about it. Think about it. If you're overweight... - Greater chance of heart disease - Greater chance of obesity - Probably won't live as long - Puts more wear and tear on your body - Getting around (walking up stairs or up hills etc.) is harder - Energy levels are lower... How can you be energetic, successful and full of life when overweight? - People don't respect you as much... Being fat is seen as a sign of weakness or indiscipline - Impacts on your love life and sex life (obviously) - I'm pretty sure it impacts on your career too... I've seen research (can't remember specifics) proving overweight corporate executives are less likely to be successful - More uncomfortable whatever you're doing... flying, driving, sitting down whatever. Rogie Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 Pattaya Daily News has the scoop! Thank you TJ, I've just read it. Hardly a scoop, more dishing the dirt on Jerry Springer. I've never seen one of his shows, just hearing about them makes me want to puke. What a jerk, having overweight people on his ego trip, exhibiting them as was popular at one time in fairground freak shows. No thought as to the longterm welfare of his 'guests'. Many of you will no doubt have had people forward into your mailbox those supposedly funny collections of photos of people shoppong at Walmart. The people in those are either overweight or badly dressed. So what? Walmart sounds a ghastly place, but people have a right to shop there if they want without some snooping anorak going around with a hidden camera. Quote
Guest GaySacGuy Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 Why does everyone keep bring up weight...just because I put on an extra 20 pounds...that is only 9 kilos (that sound better!!). I guess I will have to join the crowd and try to loose a kilo or two. Quote

I have had several surgeries this year... and am proud of the fact I have not gained any kilos or pounds. Quite unlike two years ago when I gained 5 kilos after surgery. Trying to watch what I eat..vs eating it Exercising as I can...wanting to walk more and more... I love walking...used to be able to walk many hours... but not anymore..sadly... sure hope I get the strength and walking endurance back once again. tj Quote
Guest lvdkeyes Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 Or the Brits measurement-1.4 stone sounds even better than 9kg or 20 pounds. Quote
Guest painai Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 Get out there and exercise! Pattaya has a great walking/jogging path around Buddha Hill (Kao Phratumnak). It's blocked off to vehicular traffic between 4pm and 6:30pm. I try speed walking every day for one hour during those times. Great place to walk. When I'm in Bangkok, I use Lumphini Park. No excuse for lack of exercise, and walking is free. Quote
PattayaMale Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 The reason I started the Atkins weight reduction program is that I was getting very embarrassed about my weight. Friends, not meaning to be mean, would make a joke and even though I would laugh, it really hurt. Usually it is the naturally thin people that make the jokes. Most of my adult life my weight was very stable at around 175 -180 lbs. My waist also varied, but usually 32 -34. As an adult I was not "into' gyms, but from Jr. High through College and my four years in the military, I was active, playing football and gymnastics and in the military PE. When I reached 48 I had some great stress in my life or something that caused me to become clinically depressed. The period of depression was very painful. In fact at some point I felt I needed to hospitalize my self to get needed treatment. None of my friends really knew this. But I worked very hard to do what needed to be done, including taking daily medication which I continue to this day. After I started this medication I felt much better, but my weight really started to increase. The doctor also added another medication a few years latter called Lexapro. Holly cow, my weight just kept increasing! I went to Lindora and also Weight Watchers, did Nutri-system and even paid to have pre-made normal calorie meals delivered each week to my house. Just heat and eat. I stuck with every one of the plans for awhile. And never lost more than 10 pounds in 10 months. I became so tired of trying to stick to the diet. I started to stay home, not go out with friends so I would not be tempted to eat something that was not on the diet. Dieting was more miserable than being fat!!! A few months ago I talked to my doctor vis web came and told him I did not have the stress since I was living in Thailand. I told him I wanted to go off the Lexapro since I had read a lot of research on the internet about it causing weight gain. He agreed. So after the very gradual withdrawal (another story), I decided to try to loose some weight by going on The Atkins Diet. On Aug 7 I weighed 125 kilo (about 273 lbs). By August 23 I was at 109 kilo (239 lbs). About a 16 kilo or 34 lb loss in a little over 3 weeks. It has been fairly easy, but those that know me, will not notice the weight loss until I loose maybe 9 kilo more. Will I keep the weight off? Not sure. I have met 2 people that said they have used the principles of a low carb Atkins diet for about 3 or 4 years. The said it is easy to maintain when you are able to add more carbs but still must be carefull. So thanks TJ for the encouragement. Quote

I go for a run 2-3 times a day when I'm in Phuket. Quote
Guest travelerjim Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 Saw Dr. Chin tonight and he had some good advice for Pattaya Male, GT and the diet conscious among us. Q: Doctor, I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true? A: Your heart only good for so many beats, and that it...don't waste on exercise. Everything wear out eventually. Speeding up heart not make you live longer; it like saying you extend life of car by driving faster. Want to live longer? Take nap. Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables? A: You must grasp logistical efficiency. What does cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So steak is nothing more than efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef also good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And pork chop can give you 100% of recommended daily allowance of vegetable product. Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake? A: No, not at all. Wine made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine, that mean they take water out of fruity bit so you get even more of goodness that way. Beer also made of grain. Bottom up! Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio? A: Well, if you have body and you have fat, your ratio one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio two to one, etc. Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program? A: Can't think of single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No pain...good! Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you? A: YOU NOT LISTENING! Food are fried these day in vegetable oil. In fact, they permeated by it. How could getting more vegetable be bad for you?!? Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle? A: Definitely not! When you exercise muscle, it get bigger. You should only be doing sit-up if you want bigger stomach. Q: Is chocolate bad for me? A: Are you crazy?!? HEL-LO-O!! Cocoa bean! Another vegetable! It best feel-good food around! Q: Is swimming good for your figure? A: If swimming good for your figure, explain whale to me.. Q: Is getting in shape important for my lifestyle? A: Hey! 'Round' a shape! Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets. And remember: Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!!" AND.... For those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting nutritional studies. 1. The Japanese eat very little fat And suffer fewer heart attacks than us. 2 The Mexicans eat a lot of fat And suffer fewer heart attacks than us. 3. The Chinese drink very little red wine And suffer fewer heart attacks than us. 4. The Italians drink a lot of red wine And suffer fewer heart attacks than us. 5. The Germans drink a lot of beer and eat lots of sausages and fats And suffer fewer heart attacks than us. CONCLUSION: Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you. tj Quote
Guest Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 Dieting is always a bad idea. PERMANENTLY adjusting your calorie intake to maintain your desired weight is a much better approach. Quote
Guest beachlover Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 I think the key to sticking with or sustaining something is building habits around it. We never sustain anything unless we build it as a habit... I think a diet only works if you build it as a long-term habit instead of thinking it's a "9 week" thing. Quote
