PattayaMale Posted August 19, 2010 Posted August 19, 2010 Rain, Rain, high humidity, heat, heat and this morning a 5.1 earthquake South of Java, Indonesia. I know this is the rainy season but even my Thai friend says he can't remember when the weather was like this! Global warming at her best? Quote
Guest GaySacGuy Posted August 19, 2010 Posted August 19, 2010 Here in Ubon,we are still pretty dry. It has rained, but nothing big, and the humidity isn't too bad. This afternoon it got up to 38 and then a thundercloud provided a little shade and it dropper to 33 rapidly. Overnight it was 25 which is quite comfortable. Quote
Guest lvdkeyes Posted August 19, 2010 Posted August 19, 2010 I love the rain, especially when it comes with lightening and cracking thunder. What I don't like is when it causes power outages. Quote
Guest YardenUK Posted August 19, 2010 Posted August 19, 2010 Apparently the unusual weather is due to a "kink" in the jet stream this year- affecting North America, Europe and Asia. It was on the TV news a few nights ago. " Turbo-charged monsoon confounds forecasters Normally the jet stream is a giant loop of high speed winds that whip round the upper atmosphere, writes Channel 4 News science correspondent Tom Clarke. The jet stream isn't involved in day to day weather - it's too high up - but because it pushes the atmosphere around it's very important in steering large scale weather patterns below. The stream has split in two. One arm has gone north, another south. The patch in the middle is Russia's drought. A circulating pattern of air has been sitting over Russia for far longer than normal, causing the extreme temperatures and wildfires they've had there. But what's happening over Pakistan is even stranger. The southern arm of the Jet stream has looped down so far it has crossed over the Himalayas into north western Pakistan. Experts at the Met Office tell me this is very unusual. And the result is that the fast moving jets stream winds high up has helped suck the warm, wet, monsoon air even faster and higher into the atmosphere - and that has caused rains like no-one can remember. It has turbo charged the monsoon if you like. They're not sure that's ever happened before." see also : http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-south-asia-10951517 Quote

You would of half liked it here in Ubon this evening. We had the rain (only rained about 20 minutes, but came down pretty good), lots of thuder and lightning, and unfortunately a short power outage. We were having outage of about two hours everytime there was a hard rain, but that seems to be fixed...only about 10 minutes this time. Quote

Cooling temperatures coming... good nights for activity...and a good night's sleep... humidity decreasing...rain showers and thunderstorms keeping heat away..and cleaning streets as well... now if there only was a place for all the water to go in Pattaya.. instead of the flooding! tj I walk a lot and have been caught in more large storms on this trip than I can ever remember in all of my summer trips here. Yesterday I walked Sukhumvit from Pattaya Tai Rd to Pattaya Nua Road. I experienced one of these downpours about halfway during my afternoon walk - not really many places to catch a bit of shelter. I was walking across Sukhumvit using one of the pedestrian bridges near Pattaya Klang when a huge clap of thunder and several bolts of lightning screamed across the sky. I was surrounded by excited school children who were also using the bridge. And many of them laughed and practiced a few words of English as they ran past me. I started at Big C on Sukhumvit at Pattaya Tai Rd - and by the time I reached SB Furniture, Index, and Koncept near Pattaya Nua Rd I was soaked to the bone. But it was great to be out in the elements especially after I found a small shop where I could buy an umbrella. I bought enough at Koncept that they gave me 3 promotional umbrellas - so I took a songtaow home with 4 new umbrellas - a fun and cleansing day for sure. Quote
