Gaybutton Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 I am going to start up a new message board after GT moves the current board. I have discussed this with GT and he is very supportive of my decision. I hope the rest of you will also be supportive. My intent at the moment is to open strictly a message forum rather than a full scale web site. While several people have asked me to resurrect my old web site, quite frankly it is just too time consuming to keep articles updated, photos updated, etc. Running a message board takes enough time as it is. I may add a web site to it at some point, but for now that's not my plan. The message board software I'm planning to use is the same software the Gay Ting & Tong board uses (assuming I don't have any problems getting it to work). I suppose I could have decided to just retire from running message boards and use the existing Gay Thailand forums, but I enjoy running a message board as I have been doing for so many years now and I would like to continue. I also prefer to run a board my way and I do think it is a good idea to have at least one board run by someone who lives full time in Thailand. I will not use advertising on my board. That was one aspect of my old board and I intend for the new board to be the same in that respect. I also will not solicit donations. Between domain registration and web hosting services it will cost me about US $90 per year. I think I can handle that. As always, any gay venues that wish to advertise on my new board will be welcome to do so within messages, free of charge. I will post another announcement once I have the new board ready so that you will know the URL for getting to it. However, I do not intend to open it until GT moves this board. Also, I'm planning to do some traveling in early August, so I don't know how much time I'll have in order to work on getting it up and running in time, but I'll do my best. I don't think I'll have very much trouble at least getting something preliminary up and running. I can add bells and whistles later. So, there it is. I will be very happy to welcome those of you who wish to use my board. Quote
Guest selenic Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 I'm not a great poster but I'll be happy to join your new message board. Quote
Guest penguin Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 I just joined this place today. And it's all about to move! Is it something I said? Quote
Guest Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 I'll give it a go too. Actually, I think the optimum number of Gay Thailand discussion boards would be one, providing it is well moderated & structured. However in practice, as board's can disappear at anything from zero days notice upwards, some competition is always welcome. Quote
Rogie Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 I hope the rest of you will also be supportive. I see no reason not to be I just joined this place today. And it's all about to move! Is it something I said? I see you're coming on your first visit in two months time. As this message board in general, and Gaybutton in particular, is a great resource for gay men, you've come to the right place to start getting a feel for what Thailand has to offer and ways to (hopefully) avoid all those pitfalls that can stalk the unwary. ....as board's can disappear at anything from zero days notice upwards.... How true! Quote
Guest dale1 Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 Since you will start you new message board after this one ceases to exist ....... and the other message boards might not let you announce on their boards the establishment of your new board ............. how will you get the word out?? Quote
Guest Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 GayButton had a great site many years ago and he has been instrumental in this one. I wish him all the luck and success in his new endeavor! When he gets a link or url for the site, he is welcome to post it anytime. Hopefully, that will come before this site closes down. Quote
Guest GaySacGuy Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 GB...count me in on your new board. Will also help in any way that I can. I really want us to keep a Thailand message board that can be immediately responsive to happenings here in Thailand. It has been instrumental in the exchange of information during the recent events of unrest. We need to keep it around!! Where are you travelling in August?? Quote
Gaybutton Posted July 30, 2010 Author Posted July 30, 2010 how will you get the word out?? I'll be posting the URL for the new board right here on a pinned message. It probably isn't even necessary for me to post it on other boards. Word spreads fast around here . . . Besides, I don't know why you would think other boards would refuse to let me announce it. Board owners tend to cooperate with each other. If you really do have trouble finding it, just send an Email to me at: gaybutton@gmail.com Where are you travelling in August?? I'll let the following answer that question: Quote

Just maybe I will have to take a refresher course.. "Cut & Paste 101"...to help get the message out... Just hope there are some Thai "eye candy" in my class... to show me the tricks tj Quote
Guest lvdkeyes Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 I'll let the following answer that question: [/url] You going to Fort La Dee Dah? Quote
Gaybutton Posted July 30, 2010 Author Posted July 30, 2010 You going to Fort La Dee Dah? Nope. I know where the boys are a lot closer than that . . . Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 Good news! Thanks and look forward to seeing you on the new Board. Quote

Guest FanOfThailand Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 Sorry to hear about this board going away. This was a great source for news of what's going on in Thailand and Pattaya in particular as well as a great source to get questions answered. I hope the new message board will be more of the same. Thanks to GB & GT for their great work with this board and look forward to joining the new board as soon as it is ready. Quote
Guest Jason105 Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 Since your website was one of the very first that got me hooked, I am very glad that you are keeping up the good work. I look forward to your particular outlook and viewpoint on all things Thai. all the best. Quote
Gaybutton Posted July 30, 2010 Author Posted July 30, 2010 Well, I hope I can get the new board up and running before GT does whatever he's going to do. Naturally, in keeping with Murphy's Law, I'm having problems installing it. Part of what you have to do is create a database through the web host, which I've done, and then enter the information during the installation process. So, what happens when I get as far as the database during the install? This: Could not connect to the database, see error message below. Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet', system error: 111 I don't have a clue what that's supposed to mean or what to do about it. I found several boards on which people were posting about the same problem. The gurus who post responses always like to use terminology way beyond my scope. I read their solutions and I might as well try reading Chinese. On the few I could decipher, I tried what they said to do and guess what . . . it doesn't work. So, unless one of you gentlemen know how to help me with this or I can find a solution on my own, it's either going to be awhile before I can get the new board going or I'll have to look for different software. Sorry, no help from me. I took Fortran 101 back when both of us were teenagers and I did learn then that I don't even want to know how to spell programming. Good luck with the nerds' alien language. Gaybutton Posted July 30, 2010 Author Posted July 30, 2010 Sorry, no help from me. Thanks, Bob. That's certainly a big help. You remind me of a scene from 'Flower Drum Song' when the old man, Mr. Wang, says to his young son, Wang San, "Wait a minute. Where are you going? Why aren't you in school?" Wang San replies, "It's Saturday." To which old Mr. Wang responds, "Always some excuse!" Quote
Bob Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 Wang San replies, "It's Saturday." To which old Mr. Wang responds, "Always some excuse!" Yea, but you know, now that we're retired, every friggin' day is Saturday! Quote

You may want to consider calling Bom Killen at 0812953860 or 0837764973. He spent almost 4 hours at my house doing all the things a tech guy does. He taught me a lot. Cost 500 baht Quote
Gaybutton Posted July 31, 2010 Author Posted July 31, 2010 Ok, somehow I managed to solve the problem myself. My new board is actually up and running right now and everything seems to work, but I'm not going to tell you where to find it just yet until GT gives me the green light to post the announcement.
