Bar Quality System

Recommended Posts

Not sure whether it was on this forum or another, but a few years ago there was a forum discussion on qualifying bars and grant them plaques or stars, visible for customers.

Qualification could be based on the following items:

- cleanliness

- spaciousness

- sanitary facilities

- service

- entertainment in general

- boys

- security

- boy's ages

- etc.

Since some of our "colleagues" are in the habit at the moment of tracking/hunting down sleezy bars, they might spend their time better.

On the face of it, I don't think it's such a good idea. There are too many problems with it. What some people would prioritize, others would not. And how would you rate the boys? A lot of people love the well defined muscular types. For others, that's just what they dislike. It's too subjective. Not only that, but a lot of these boys change bars quite often. How would you rate a bar that would get high marks for nearly everything on your list, but here comes the pushy mama-san to spoil it all.

In my opinion there is only one way to rate a bar. You either like it or you don't.

Not true at all, There are subjective points about Bars and Objective points.

1. I think most of us understand what a clean toilet is.

2. I think most of us understand whether we can have a conversation in the bar because the level of the music is proper.

3. I think most of us understand whether there is a fast or slow rotation of Boys.

4. Prices the Bar charges are definitely Objective.

5. Whether smokers were observed in the Bar

6. Are extras such as cold towels or snacks provided

Theses and I am sure more are not really open to that much interpretation . And I think would be a good start on which Bars would move to the Top of my list to visit.

I agree the quality of the boys is very subjective but most of the other things I care about are not,

I think if a large % of people said where a Bar fits on the above and any more people would care to suggest, it would be very helpful to people in prioritizing where they go first.

I agree that the quality of a bar is 100% subjective. Even if all the above items are met and the guys on the stage aren't what I'm looking for, why go in? I happen to like guys a little older and beefier. Some prefer skinny fem types. To each his own, but that's the reason I the choose the bar I do, which has nothing to do with whether the music is loud, towels are provided or whatever.

I have to admit I am at a loss to understand this argument. Most of the Bars have a mix of Boys especially in Boystown. There are no muscle bars like Tawan in Bangkok. You are just as likely to find the type you like in almost any Bar in Boystown. Except if you are looking for little boys. That being the case the Bars that provide a clean, safe etc etc etc should be the ones that people gravitate to.

The proof is in the pudding as they say. FunnyBoys by any measure is probably the most successful Bar in Boystown at the present time and offers all the things I listed as important to many people.. They also happen to have a variety of Boys.

What other Bars in Boystown do posters here think offer similar atmosphere etc and as well run as FunnyBoys.

It wouldn't help me any. I prefer deciding those kinds of things for myself. I'm not going to go to a bar or avoid going to a bar based on how others might rate it. There are also too many people, and we've seen these kinds of posts before, who have something against certain bars and are not above telling others how terrible it is even if it isn't.

The only thing others have to say about different bars that interests me are reports about drink prices, off fees, and features such as the Happy Bar upstairs feature. Other than that, I'm not interested.

Of course, that's just me. If a lot of people would want such a rating system, I certainly have no objection. I simply would pay no attention to it.

Amazing yet you are one of the first people to take someone else"s recommendation for a restaurant and many people here take your reviews and use them to choose where they will eat.

What is the difference???

GB, I agree with you 100%.

I think a star system would be misleading and useless. A much more useful "barometer" are the narrative reports on the board provided by patrons. The narrative reports allow for detailed descriptions of what the author has seen and experienced.

These "bar attributes" are too subjective and cannot be easily quantified. A star system would be to simplistic. An example of this is the issue of a clean bathroom. Not everyone has the same standards when calling something "clean." Your clean may well be my dirty.

And then there is the issue of stars. How many stars? 5? 50? 100? How about half stars? Maybe quarter stars? In each category, what is the definition of a star? of 2 stars? 2.25 stars? 34 stars?

Finally, GB (as usual) raises an excellent point. "There are also too many people, and we've seen these kinds of posts before, who have something against certain bars and are not above telling others how terrible it is even if it isn't." This jaded, slanted reporting does a disservice to both the members of the board and the bars that are maligned.

IMHO

Tell you what Firecat. You know my type. I'll trust your recommendation on a boy. :) Find me a good one and I'll be to Bangkok soon.

OK. I'll start Duc's Bar in Sunee Plaza

1. Cleanliness - 5 stars - best toilets in Sunee.

2. Spaciousness - 3 stars - It is a small bar but always welcoming.

3. Sanitary Facilities - not sure what you mean

4. Service - 5 stars - the boys there are great!

5 Entertainment in General - 4 stars - Duc is entertaining but they don't have Karaoke

6. Boys - 5 stars - IMHO some of the hottest guys around - all my type and all great guys

7. Security - I feel safe there. I am not sure they have security

8. Boys Ages - 5 Star - They are ALL over 23

So there you have it, my Star System for Duc's. Drop in and have a pee, a drink or use their sanitary facilities anytime as the boys are fun and the entertainment is entertaining and the place is safe for all.

What is the difference???

I see a tremendous difference.

I just had a look at GT's rating of Duc's Bar. "The boys there are great." What does that mean? "Duc is entertaining . ." What does that mean? "IMHO some of the hottest guys around - all my type . ." What does that mean? I have to guess what his type is and I also have to guess whether his type is also my type and whether what he considers hot is also what I consider hot. Whatever those mean, it's not going to convince me to go there or to avoid there. To me, it's non-information information.

If you see restaurant reviews as the same thing, I can only say that I don't agree with you.

You said I try restaurants based on other people's reviews and other people try restaurants based on mine. I don't have a problem with that. I also don't have a problem if people really want to try to rate bars. I've already stated what my priorities would be based on bar ratings, and GT's rating of Duc's bar contains neither of them. So, his rating is of no interest to me. If it is to you, I have no objection.

My "review" was quick and short and meant to be humorous. GayButton's reviews are more serious. I could have done that too. I didn't.

Food, exactly like bars, are all up to the person. I have eaten at places that were recommended by others and I detest them. Point in case is the all your can eat buffets just about anywhere. I love going to Manhattan's and Firecat hates it. To each his own.

Offering a review of a bar is the same as offering a review of a restaurant. I suggest that anyone that wants to brave those waters do it here. They are most welcome. I get many good recommendations from restaurants and bars from this site.

I really don't see much of a difference when one is reviewing one or the other. It really is so dependent on the tastes of the individual. In the end, the real result is: The more you know about some place, the more likely you are to make an informed decision.

Factors such as cleanliness, comfort & value could be given 1~5 stars.

Type of boy is difficult. I would give 0 out of 5 for Tawan & 5 for Classic Boys (as it was), although others may reverse the ratings.

Age is difficult. Bars that very clearly do not respect the over 18 rule should not even receive a rating.

Then how do you score it? What gives maximum points?

Giving out high marks for just people over 30s would not be to everyone's taste.

Equally, if the staff are all 18~19 years old, that's also not going to please everyone and you have to rely almost solely on the IDs being genuine. So a little older might be better.

Thank you very much. You are so kind.

Of course, ratings are subjective. I , for once, ignore all restaurants recommended by Gaybutton. (It started after tried Casa Pascal many years ago based on his recommendation. For me, this is pathetic, mediocre, overpriced place).

Funnyboys is the exception..Excellent in everyway..But it has to be more than The Boys, comfort, price of drinks, service, all add up to a place that would encourage one to return....

Please continue to do so. The thought of eating in any restaurant at which you might be present makes me nauseous.

On another subjective note...

Being in funny boys reminds me of being at a funeral or stuck in supermarket aisle!

Music levels are way to low and for me there is no "real" atmosphere...

I guess its fine if you want to sit and chat... but its certainly not upbeat!

Especially if you want to try and judge the character of a potential off

(ie. Is he: shy/quiet/outgoing/crazy/straight etc)

Its a pity as Rose has an excellent eye for picking a good range of boys to suit all tastes

On another subjective note...

It that being subjective?I read on another forum that this venue won the Best Gay Venue 2009..must be doing something right..I have always found it to have just the right mix of music, guys, and price..

I didn't say my post was Objective - I said it was Subjective...

My whole point was that one mans meat is another mans poison!

Some people love the low old music in Funny Boys.

Personally I would prefer it to sound like the music at NAB. :o

It seems that some here don't know what subjective means.

It seems that some here don't know what subjective means.

And some don't know what Objective means??

The rating that the music is low enough to have conversation is an Objective Rating.

Your likes or dislikes of that kind of music are your preferences.

If a Bar is rated as having Low conversational music then that is not the Bar for you. And thus having that information would allow you not to waste your time. Likewise if the music is rated at the level of Nab , I won't be caught dead there.

Same as someone saying clean is a Subjective rating . Does anybody here not know the difference between a toilet that smells and is filthy versus one that is clean and smells fresh. Of course there are varying degrees of clean but really these are Bars. I think most of us know the difference between Clean and Dirty in a General sense.

I will continue to do so: see you vomiting (on top of your other excellent attributes)

is somewhat overtop.

I think this has been tried before here or on some other GayThai board. The above points along with operating times I would find helpful as someone who is an occasional visitor. The biggest problem I see whether these rating points or something more comprehensive is that it's hard to keep up to date. I recall the previous bar ratings I had seen tended to be very old and some of the bars rated were no longer in operation. So I guess the most accurate way to judge is to stick your head in and take a peek.
