IPad 3G in Thailand

Recommended Posts

OK. The official Gay Thailand report on the IPad 3G.

First, it is amazing. The speed is incredible. The versatility of the programs almost compares to Gaybutton's versatility. :)

I love the look and the feel. There are just too many programs out there not to love this thing.

In the USA, all the stores I went to were sold out of the WiFi only version as I was trying to pick up one for a friend. I was not successful.

I did get the 3G version for myself and I was able to test it and while it is not 3G speed in LOS, it is not 3G in USA either. It is very sufficient to do e-mail and casual Internet work.

For Thailand, I suggest that if you want to use it on the 3G, that you go with 12Call. Buy a new Sim Card. Put 700 on that sim card. Call the company and tell them you are going to be using a blackberry and that you want the Unlimited Package. This will get you a savings of over 300 baht per month. The plan costs 650 per month.

Forget all you have read about it being blocked. That is not true. You don't need to jailbreak it. It is as simple as putting a new sim in. HOWEVER, these are mini SIM cards just like the new IPhone 4G. So, you will have to trim it down. I suggest going to Tuk com and having someone do that for you. Then, you insert the Sim in and you are ready to go.

So, to sum things up. If you want an amazing device that works on the telephone network in Thailand for e-mail and Internet:

1. Get a Sim Card.

2. Put money on it for the first month and then don't forget to deposit money online for other months. (Why? If you need to call them, you can only call from a 4G IPhone to talk to them).

3. Call your provider to sign up for Unlimited Internet.

4. Insert a pin to eject the Sim.

5. Take out ATT (Shitty Ass company from USA) and put in your new Sim.

Turn On and surf.

If you have questions on the process, let me know.

Lastly, I love this device. The battery is amazing and the graphics are awesome. My favorite program is a Crossword program that downloads the newest crosswords from about 20 of the best places daily and stores then for you to play with. Second best program is the Kindle for IPad (IPhone). It lets you read all your Kindle purchased books on a great screen.

I love this device

I saw someone using it in a Starbucks yesterday. It looked great and the guy obviously found it easy to use.

One question. I don't really want the iPad. I have an iTouch and Apple computers, but I don't feel I need an iPad. The only gadget I do want is a book reader. The Kindle seems like a better bet because it is smaller, cheaper and easier to carry around (along with my laptop etc.). Would you agree?

Yes, I agree. I love that I can use my Kindle books on my IPad. A perfect fit.

As for smaller, I have the Kindle DX and it is about the same size as the IPad.

As an Apple addict, I said I was not going to get one of these things as I didn't need it either. But, when I held it, played with it, saw the speed of the games and the beauty of the movie screen, I said, I can't believe I ever lived without one.

I'm gonna buy a Kindle Dx in the next few days. Is 3g working in Pattaya or at least Edge?I'd like to use the basic web browser while on the beach :)

OK. After a couple of weeks of playing with this gadget, I have decided it is the best invention since Al Gore invented the Internet. I am sold on it!

Hey Selenic,

You would need to buy a SIM from True Move for 3G in Pattaya. It's the only 3G network available in Pattaya. Top up 699 bht and get 1GB Edge/3G WI FI Unlimited. Send SMS V2 to 9789. Hope that helps when you return to Pattaya.

LOL... That looks like fun. Looks similar to Worms... I wonder if there's a two-player version. These two-player games can be fun when you're hanging out at restaurants and stuff.

I went out with a Thai boy who loves his iPad too. He bought it overseas but he couldn't get accessories for it in Thailand. Apparently there was (or still isn't) any release date for the iPad in Thailand!

I think there are more functional and practical competitors... but none as sexy or enjoyable to use as the iPad.

I'll check out worms. Thanks. The Angry Birds is amazing. It is one of the best games I have seen. And, the graphics and the processor power of the IPad blows away anything by Sony or other game makers. It is a mini computer but I have been using it as a game device.

I don't know how I ever lived without one. My BF in Brazil has been asking me to bring him one when I go down there. I'll have to try to find one in the USA before I head down as they are impossible to find in Brazil and if they are there, they are triple the price.

Oh, sorry... I don't know if "Worms" is an iPhone/iPad game or not.

I was referring to the PC computer game called, "Worms"... it was huge in it's day, like PacMan (before my time).

You have a BF in both countries??!! I'm jealous... jeeaaaaalous!

In the USA right now and on a real 3G network and the IPad flies. It is averaging speeds of around 1M download. I tested this in LA, Las Vegas, Palm Springs, Phoenix and Dallas. All the speeds were over 700k sec. Most were over 1M.

I have been in several hotels and the speed on the IPad has been better than some of the hotels. So, it is an impressive device.

I read that Thailand has halted the 3G auction and that the 3G service may not be available for a while. However, if you travel outside of Thailand, the IPad 3G is amazing!

Yes they have idea step over 3G directly to 4G, coz 3G is old enough and 4G is much more faster (up to 1000Mbit/s in comp. up to 56 Mbit/s) and modern...

All I know is my tests with the IPad and the speed is 10 - 20 times faster in EVERY US city I visited. And, when in Thailand, I tested with 12Call one other company.

Yes, for now it sure should be like that coz in Thailand even in places where 3G exist they use different version of 3G which is based on GSM, but not on CDMA like in USA...

I also tested in Brazil on a recent trip and it was even slower than in Thailand. But, for the better phone carriers in Brazil, you need to sign a one year contract and you have to have a Brazilian ID. It is not as simple as in LOS.

However, the Brazilian BF loved his IPad. I did see them in the stores down there for double the price of the USA. So, I'll bet soon after I left him, he has more cash in his pocket. :)
