How Little Can You Live On

There was a thread on this started on 6 December 2009 by rentalb123. It was titled

Retire in Thailand? So what does it cost to retire in Pattaya?

Particularly interesting may be this post -

I spend about 45K baht a month plus about 2200 USD per year on international health insurance I bought thru TJ.

I don't mind living on the cheap.

I like eating Thai food and spending more money in the bars wouldn't make me happier.

If I had more money, I would enjoy travelling more.

He added in the next post that his rent was 9K per month.

The question in this thread is quite different than in the original thread. If I was in real financial distress.

Rent in a fan room 2000 baht/mo.

Food, always Thai, maybe as low as 3000 baht/mo

Then add on from there depending how dire the financial straights are.

I think I would choose to live in a fan room at Up2U Apartments, 3500 baht, free wifi, and quite nice. Hard to get into though. Same assumption as above that u already have a laptop.

Get a membership at Tony's Gym assuming you have the 6K baht for yearly menmbership. That is 500 a month.

Socializing is mostly at tables outside of minimarts, you and a mate can share a big bottle of Archa that sells for 35 baht. These minimarts often provide glasses.

Or walk with friends or watch downloaded torrents with friends.

Water at the 1 baht filter machines.

This scenario is less than 10K a month assuming you never have any medical expenses.

So if u actually have 20K a month then that gives you a chance for some splurges. Maybe you go to real bar every once in awhile. Maybe you have a favorite boy that you call occasionally.

Day to day, one can live cheap as long as there is no big emergency.

I know I could live on 20K a month if i had an emergency fund and it would not be all that difficult. I spend more cause I have it.

The 10K scenario would not be pretty but nescessity is the mother of invention.

That sounds viable in theory. But I think, coming from a wealthy Western country where opportunity has abounded, to end up doing that is not a terribly flattering situation.

Living on 45,000 baht a month is not living on the cheap in my opinion...as a matter of fact it is pretty much how I live.

It's fine if you live comfortably and are able to do what you want... But it's when you have to resort to things like only having a fan, having a drink outside a supermarket instead of a nice bar or not going to the movies where it gets a bit unflattering, if you have come from a background where you've had plenty of opportunity.

I live with and like my air conditioning...and I don't remember having a drink outside a supermarket (Where have you been doing your drinking???? Weird?) movies unflattering...not sure???

And a background of opportunity?? ok

Oh, I think you're confused. My post/s wasn't referring to your own situation. It was referring to one of the poorer situations described above with someone describing or proposing to live on 10k baht a month or something.

45k baht a month is ok... I think I could live off that in a small town.

I lived on that quite well in Pattaya, and was having a lot of fun and eating good!

I don't doubt that you did... You can live alright on 45k baht in Thailand.
