Hotel breakfasts

if you were in 2nd and 3rd week we were rubbing shoulders for 9 days

Yes I was definitely there then. Later in the month I stayed in On Nut, but sometimes I would catch the train to Silom mainly to have breakfast at Quarter Saladaeng. I think there is a certain ambience in their restaurant too.

Maybe we have gone off topic, but it's an interesting thread.

So may I bring in another angle, please? I'm just wondering about buffet lunches, that is if you haven't already over indulged at a buffet breakfast. I noticed that Ibis Styles had a buffet lunch for 250 baht, which seems very reasonable. So I am just wondering if anyone else has lunch recommendations.

as for joiner fees, that's history, at least if you are joined by one guest. Certainly post-covid I did not have problems with guests anywhere neither I heard about it from my friends. I don't recall joiners fees reported anywhere on forums in last 3 years so take a heart ( and invite a guest)

Sadly I have to prove you wrong, vinapu. I have just booked into Silom Heritage for 2 nights. Their rules and regulations state that there is a joiner fee of 900 baht. 😭

I searched gay guides last year and it was recommended as gay friendly, but also that there was a joiner fee. I should have listened to my gut instinct. On principle I will not be taking anyone back there and in a couple of days I will probably check in to Quarter Silom, where there is no problem.

Before losing all hope I suggest take a heart and try first. I took guy there in January as stated  in my trip report and nobody made any fuss , neither when we went to the room not when we came down in the morning for a breakfast. Siam Heritage rearranged entry area and now you go directly to card accessed elevator area bypassing reception after initial registration  entirely.

In the past that hotel had reputation of being joiner unfriendly  but that may be thing of the past.

I acted on earlier report from somebody on the forum (reader?) who reported no problem with joiner as well but was made to register him at breakfast. I and my guest were spared even that small indignity.

Thanks vinapu.

Yes, I did notice that you can bypass reception. But to be honest I feel very fluey and lethargic at the moment, so I probably should take it easy and get a couple of early nights and try to recover.

You telling us you arrived in Bangkok and you feel lethargic ? Is that possible at all? Very minute I land at Swampy I feel an adrenaline rush and believe me , my way to Thailand is very long one.

Best way to recover is to get entertained the very first night, exactly like ggobkk reported recently about his arrival

With so many decent places available in the area that welcome guests, I'd not risk the embarrassment of being told "no". Nor having to sneak someone in. And remember, it would be an embarrassment for your guest, too.

The first night in Thailand is always special for me, too....chicken and cashew nuts and squid salad at Balcony! That's a tradition dating back to 1997.

No problem so long as you accompany guest in and out of building. If you bring him to breakfast you will have to register him as the second person in reservation.

Always reserve room anywhere for party of two!

Honestly I was fine when I arrived in Bangkok, but now I'm coughing, congested and spluttering. I'm just going to head off to a pharmacy for some medication and hope to come right in a day or two.

sorry to hear that, seems you were sitting by the wrong person on the plane. In this situation it's better you stay away from guest taking until you get better, hopefully soon. Remember , it's very unhealthy to be sick

I remember you warned me about that  but when S and me went down for breakfast nobody asked anything.

Sometimes it's the Air conditioning on the plane ,it's too cold sometimes

I agree wholeheartedly. Also coming to Thailand from a cold southern Winter as well as going from the air-conditioning at the hotel into the intense heat outdoors. I got a cold not long after arriving last July, but much worse this year.

My commiserations. This was frequently an issue for me and particularly galling if suffered on the outward leg.

On the positive side, my partner introduced me to some popular local medications which helped. "TiffY"? "XZY"?....these are approximations from memory.

Speak to your local pharmacist but check  carefully if you are already on any other medications.

I was given a 2 day supply of a medication called Apracur. Well, it's a good thing I read your post, Londoner, as I thought I would look up the ingredients and noticed that the first on the list was paracetamol, which I  had also been taking alongside it.

I suspect paracetamol will also be found in the medications I mentioned. Checking ingredients is always important. I once bought travel sickness tablets in a Pattaya pharmacy only to find when I checked back at my hotel against my existing regular medication that they were possibly harmful.

In terms of prevention, a travel specialist doctor advised the use of tea-tree oil for the journey. A little in each nostril- not an unpleasant smell in my view-  may help. I used it regularly both ways.

Thanks vinapu. Yes I did have fun and documented it in Bangkok bar shows thread.

By the way imho the breakfast is far better at Quarter Saladaeng than Quarter Silom. My plan of attack is to stay at Quarter Silom, but go to Quarter Saladaeng for breakfast.

I usually stay at quarter silom. I found the breakfast better than most hotels around the same price range. Interesting that the one at saladaeng is better...but isn't it kind of inconvenient to travel all the way there just for breakfast 😅
