PattayaMale Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 Geezer and I had dinner together a few days ago at Chez Vicki and it was fantastic. There is a new chef that gets the meals out on time. The food we had was marvelous. New waiters speak very good English. Waiter Gak said he watches BBC to learn his English. So improved, I have eaten there 3 out of 6 days. Their 290 Baht (Soup, salad, Main is great value for the delicious meals) If you were turned off by the service before, give it another try. Very good...and handsome waiters. Vicki said that Sunday (?) she was going to preform after a set choice dinner. The dinner and show I think will be 690 baht.....not sure but I will check Quote

The dinner and show I think will be 690 baht.....not sure but I will check I hate to burst your bubble and I may be unkind, but I went with 3 other people about 4 days ago. The chef had been there only a short time along with all the staff. The soup on special was Fish and tasted as if some kind of fish had been swirled around in some hot water. The Spring Rolls, which two of us ordered, were ordered and the dim ex waiter from Bordeaux told us only one was available, which my friend chose. Then as we waited he finally came back after the other two had there fish soup delivered and said there no Spring Rolls. We had the Chicken on the special, ordered by 3 of us. Sorry only 2 chicken available!. The friend who said he would order something else asked for 2 other main dshes and they were not available. The third choice was! So whilst I could say it is early days with new staff, it will be a while before we try again I am afraid. Quote
Guest RichLB Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 I'm disappointed to read Kotter's review. I've always liked Chez Vicki's, but have been put off by previous experiences with ordered food not being available (and not told about that until others had been served) and mixed up orders. It does sound like Vicki is making efforts to get things in order, though. But, i think I'll wait to return until I hear more reviews like PattayaMale's. Quote

I would not take to much notice of Kotter, he is well known to complain about just everything, you could call him an angry Old man All he was saying is the place was full and most things sold out, may be they tried to stretch the fish soup, by adding some more water, so you can see how you can turn a negative comment into a positive one, Bravo to Chez Vicky, full at last, just have to make more food? I had some friends visit recently, after hearing it has got better after our not to good an experience with the old chef, and it has, so book early as you may be tripped over in the rush. Quote
PattayaMale Posted June 30, 2010 Author Posted June 30, 2010 Tomorrow (July 1) I am taking 3 others there for dinner. 2 of them had visited before the new staff and chef came on board and had not planned to return. My pledge to them is if they don't find the food and service to be really good and the price fair, the dinner will be paid by me. So I guess my culinary taste is on the line. But I will post our experience after tomorrow. My only reason in doing this, is that I hope the restaurant prospers IF it deserves. Unfortunately we have seen a few really good places like Wi's close for lack of customers in this terrible low season. But so far, after the new staff, which Vicki agrees was not what it should have been, I have really enjoyed dining there. They are located on Soi Day Night 2 (tel. 089 0123633) closed on Tuesday. So let's see how it goes tomorrow and if really improved maybe I can make the same deal with Rich LB that I made with the guys going there tomorrow. Quote

Gaybutton Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 LMTU must be proud of you. As much as I'm sure we would all like to see this thread turn into an online bitch-slap between you and HeyGay, let's not do that. This thread is about Chez Vickie. Please keep it that way. I think we all have figured out that you dislike HeyGay and HeyGay dislikes you. Quote

Gaybutton Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 I had some problems at Chez Vickie myself the last couple of times I was there. However, based on what I'm seeing posted here, I'm going to return very soon. Quote
PattayaMale Posted July 1, 2010 Author Posted July 1, 2010 Tonight I took 2 friends that swore they would not return to Chez Vickie, there as posted earlier. They both absolutely raved about the food and service. They could not believe it was the same place. They were shocked how good the food was and wondered how it could be done for 290 baht each (daily special). There table wine was good to they said. My meal consisted of the Fish soup (since another poster said it was terrible, I wanted to see if it had improved), tuna salad, and chicken stew French style which also came with flat noodles and a really great bit of stuffed zucchini for 290. My Thai friend had spring rolls, and his main was fish served with uniquely fried potatoes and a spinach souffl Quote
Guest kotter Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 Thanks for the excellent review. I have talked to the other 4 people so we will give it another go. However I will not post a review because I would not wish to possibly denigrate what you yourself feel, against what my four friends may feel. We plan to try it again on Monday so maybe we are in for a surprise! This time we will talk to Vicky so that if there are any problems it will come from the horses mouth! Quote
Gaybutton Posted July 2, 2010 Posted July 2, 2010 I had dinner at Chez Vickie this evening with Pattayamale and RichLB. I agree that there has been major improvement, both in the service and the food. In all honesty, for awhile Chez Vickie turned into a major disappointment for me. As much as I loved it when it was Vickie L'amour in Bangkok and as much as I loved it when it first opened in Pattaya, the last time I was there I swore never to go back. There were several of us that night. The last three times there were problems about mixed up orders, etc. On one occasion I had been served a salad I had not ordered. I called the waiter over to tell him I had not ordered it and didn't want it. He simply responded with "Mai pen rai" and didn't take it back. I took that to mean he could not take it back once it had been served, so as long as I have it, I might as well eat it, which I did. I was also charged for it . . . The last time I was there I placed my order. I never got any food! We had to beg just to be served some bread, and then had to beg again to get some butter. I am not exaggerating when I tell you I waited a full hour before the waiter came over to tell me they had run out of what I had ordered. A full hour! It wasn't as if other people had ordered the same thing and they had just then run out. It was perfectly obvious they had already run out at the time I placed the order. I didn't lose my cool at that point, although I was getting hungrier and hungrier watching everybody else eating. I told the waiter I'll have the nightly special instead. About twenty minutes later they brought the food . . . the wrong order! The waiter actually argued with me about it. I sent it back and decided to give it fifteen more minutes. When the fifteen minutes was up, so was I. I don't recall ever having walked out of a restaurant in my life, but that night I walked out. I wasn't about to go back until Pattayamale insisted that everything had changed and now the restaurant is excellent and operating as it should be. So, tonight I went. I'll admit having a chip on my shoulder when I walked in, but Pattayamale was right. The whole thing has changed. A whole new, well trained, efficient staff and excellent food, all served properly and in a timely manner. I was delighted and now Chez Vickie is back on my favorites list. Quote
Guest lvdkeyes Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 so as long as I have it, I might as well eat it, which I did. I was also charged for it . . . Of course, you were charged for it because you ate it. If you had left it untouched then you would have had a right to refuse to pay for it. Quote
Gaybutton Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 Of course, you were charged for it because you ate it. If you had left it untouched then you would have had a right to refuse to pay for it. I understand that, but it wasn't quite that simple and I think given the circumstances as to how I ended up with that salad, I would have had a right to refuse paying for it. The waiter made it seem as if he owned up to his mistake when I said I didn't order it and really didn't want it. He made it seem as if he was saying there was some reason he was refusing to take it back, so he's just giving it to me. Obviously if I didn't eat an item I had never ordered in the first place, then I would have refused to pay if charged. But, yes, I did eat it and during dinner we were all guessing whether I was going to end up charged for it. Don't forget, I tried to give it back, but he wouldn't take it and said "mai pen rai". I think if I wanted to make an issue of it I would have had a case since he wouldn't take it back. He should have taken it back and thrown it out or eaten it himself or something. Some restaurants would have taken it back and served it to someone else, but since I did eat it I didn't make an issue of it. "I don't get no respect at all. Karl Malden stole my traveler's checks. I called up AT&T. They wouldn't take me back!" - Rodney Dangerfield Quote
Guest lvdkeyes Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 Regarding mai pen rai - the other night at 215am I got a phone call from someone who I don't even remember. When I said, "Why are you calling me at this time of the night?" He said "mai pen rai". What is mai pen rai to you and me is not necessarily the same to Thais. Quote
Gaybutton Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 What is mai pen rai to you and me is not necessarily the same to Thais. Apparently not. Now I'm wondering what it is to Thais. Quote
Guest lvdkeyes Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 I think it is something to say when they don't know what else to say. Quote
Guest Geezer Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 Years ago in a restaurant at Mt. Rushmore in the US I got some roast beef which was so tough I couldnt eat it. When I asked for the charge to be taken off my check the cashier refused. I repeated my request, and still she refused. I then told her in that case I wanted a second order of the roast beef. She asked why on earth I wanted a second order. I told her I wanted to make a pair of sandals. Quote

Guest buckeroo2 Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 I had dinner at Chez Vickie this evening with Pattayamale and RichLB. I walked by Chez Vickie on Friday at about 7:00 PM and I saw 3 farang men dining inside -I wondered if these might be the guys who wanted to give the place another try and report back here. I am guessing it was indeed the 3 Amigos. Quote
Gaybutton Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 I am guessing it was indeed the 3 Amigos. Yes, it must have been us. We arrived shortly before 7:00pm and were the only ones there for quite some time. And it was Friday evening. Next time, drop in and say hello or even join us. If nothing else, you could have gotten our autographs . . . Quote
