Gaybutton Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 I was going to do this as a poll, but it got too complicated. We've discussed the pros and cons of using personals sites such as Gay Romeo. Now I'm wondering how many of you actually use Gay Romeo and/or other sites for hookups. Of course, there are plenty of personals sites out there besides just Gay Romeo, so please let us know which site(s) you are talking about. It wouldn't hurt to provide the URL for those sites in case other users are not familiar with them. Gay Romeo is: http://www.gayromeo.com I'm wondering about the kinds of use these sites are actually getting from us. I use it quite regularly, both for hookups and often enough just to browse. I also check out some of the other personals sites, but I use primarily Gay Romeo. I've never sought out a hookup from other sites, but for me Gay Romeo has been, shall we say, prolific. What about you? Do you use these sites? Do you arrange hookups? Do you find hookups besides Thailand, such as in your home country? Maybe you don't bother with these sites at all, but I have a feeling we may see some interesting responses on this thread. Quote
Guest lvdkeyes Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 I don't use the sites to hook up anymore, but I did use Gay Romeo, http://www.Silverdaddies.com and http://www.DaddyHunt.com . Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 I have met some great Thai guys on gayromeo. I have only once met someone outside Thailand - just a couple of weeks ago in Singapore. For meeting Asian guys, especially Chinese, outside Thailand, I find http://www.fridae.com much more profitable. Quote
Guest irish1972 Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 I agree with foutainhall, Gayromeo seems to be huge in Thailand, but when I am in China I use Fridae, all the rest are blocked! Quote
Guest Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 For me, Gay Romeo only seems worthwhile where there are no other pick up options. I would rather visit gogo bars, meet people on Jomtien beach or in known pick up points. If none of these exist, Gay Romeo is a good last resort. Nothing more. [by the way, is Mr Button a shareholder in Gay Romeo?] Quote
PattayaMale Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 [by the way, is Mr Button a shareholder in Gay Romeo?] My unreliable sources have told me is was one of the original partners. Have you ever been invited to the Gay Romeo Appreciation Dinner which he funds annually? Fabulous!!! Quote
PattayaMale Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 I don't think so. Apparently you are not on the "A" list!! Quote
Bob Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 Nope, never have been there (the website, that is). Quote

You must be mistaking me for someone else. I'm much too unappreciative and definitely far too cheap . . . Quote

PattayaMale Posted June 24, 2010 Posted June 24, 2010 It looks like I was right. For legal reasons, he just won't admit it. I recently have been giving Gay Romeo a try. It was difficult for me to learn how to use it effectively. Now that I understand it better, I enjoy it. Most bars don't open until 8:30 pm. So I have been on the site in the afternoon. Quote

Guest shockdevil Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 I have been using Gay Romeo for the past few years. I have met some great guys on there in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Egypt. I actually have been in Internet Cafes when cute guys in there have contacted me and we end up leaving the cafe together. The good thing about it for me is that I always met hot horny guys on there that were only looking for quick hook-ups and not payments. It reminds me of the site many guys use in USA called Adam4Adam. I am sure there are plenty Pay-4-Play guys on there but at least you can weed them out and just hook up with fun guys. Quote

I've never sought out a hookup from other sites, but for me Gay Romeo has been, shall we say, prolific. I've visited GR regularly for a few years. I'm in USA and haven't been to LOS since 2008. What I have noticed is a change in thai boys and their assertiveness on GR. At first, I was the contactor and never got a IM except as a response to an IM I initiated, now, I can't spend an hour on GR without 3-4 Thai guys contacting me asking, "Can I meet you now?" Believe me, it hurts to have to say I'm not in Thailand, but to their credit, some will offer their email or mobile numbers for when I get a chance to return. The others, who end the convo there I'm sure are just after quick cash, so I make a mental note to avoid them in the future. I attribute most of the change to the drop in tourism I read about on the board and elsewhere, but could be wrong. Quote

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss those who end the conversation when they find out your are not in Thailand. They are not all money boys and may see no point to continue a conversation with someone they can't hook up with for some fun right away. Quote

You're right, I shouldn't dismiss them as money boys, but it does tell me a lot about their thinking if they're in such a hurry that a "mai pen rai" or "OK, bye" is too much to offer in reply. Quote
Gaybutton Posted June 27, 2010 Author Posted June 27, 2010 but it does tell me a lot about their thinking Yes, often what you say is correct. But I have also had times when the chat ended through no fault of their own. Remember where you're talking about. All to often, in Thailand the Internet just suddenly stops. It happens to me too, and as Murphy's Law would have it, often right in the middle of a good hookup chat! For reasons I don't have any idea about, I can almost count on my Internet freezing up at about 6:50pm just about every day. I have to restart my computer to get the Internet going again. I have no clue why that happens, but it happens. Also, many of these boys advance pay for a specified amount of time when they're in Internet shops. When the time runs out, they're instantly cut off. They rarely are back the same day because they can't afford to pay for more time that day. Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted June 27, 2010 Posted June 27, 2010 it does tell me a lot about their thinking if they're in such a hurry that a "mai pen rai" or "OK, bye" is too much to offer in reply. I do think this is unfair on the boys. I suggest it says much more about the internet culture of today. Unlike years of old, when meeting someone usually meant a physical presence with all its attendant pleasantries of greeting and farewelling, however basic, many young people today are entirely at home with a quick 'Hi' and then a click off if you're not what they're looking for - whether this is just a general chat (and that is all some guys want), perhaps having a coffee together, perhaps immediate sex, possibly money, whatever. It's far less a lack of courtesy than a fact of the times we live in. Most of the guys I 'meet' online want to know if I am in Thailand. If I happen to be overseas, then they are far less willing to continue. It is after all one of the Thailand rooms. Quote

Jason1988 Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 In Thailand, with all the places you can go to meet young men, I don't understand why anyone would sit in front of a computer screen to look for potential hook ups. Such a waste of precious time. Just walk around and the young men will either smile at you or wink to let you know they are interested. You can see them first hand, ask questions, check ID's or whatever. And it doesn't matter what you look like, are old, fat, slim or anything in between. To the Thai guys you're a walking ATM and that is a big attraction. However, if you are looking for a lover or BF, then the internet might be a better choice. Quote
Gaybutton Posted July 1, 2010 Author Posted July 1, 2010 In Thailand, with all the places you can go to meet young men, I don't understand why anyone would sit in front of a computer screen to look for potential hook ups. Such a waste of precious time. Without rehashing all the reasons already posted, I'll give you a few more. Obviously the most common places people look for hookups are the bars. Not everybody likes the bars. Not everybody is located conveniently to the bars. Even those who like the bars are not necessarily in "a bar mood" every time they're seeking a hookup. Not everybody would agree that using hookup sites is a "waste of precious time" when they know they can easily find a hookup within minutes on those sites, whereas going out cruising might take quite some time before you find what you're looking for. For those visiting areas that don't have gay bars or areas at which they are unfamiliar, it can be difficult just to figure out where to cruise at all or they just have to trust to luck that someone who appeals to them is going to give you that smile or wink. Hookup sites can very often solve that problem. Also, if you're going to search the bars, shopping malls, the beach, etc, you have to do your cruising during the hours those places are open and/or when boys are likely to be there. On the other hand, boys are available on the hookup sites 24/7. Quote
Gaybutton Posted July 1, 2010 Author Posted July 1, 2010 I'm going to steal some thunder from RichLB, but this story is too good not to post. I love it when a farang manages to beat a thief at his own game. We always warn everyone to be very careful with personal belongings when you have a "guest" who you don't really know. RichLB told me a story, as it was told to him by a friend, about a very clever farang who buys fake, dirt cheap, but real looking, "Rolex" watches from the vendors. They cost what, maybe a couple hundred baht each? When he has someone he doesn't know come over, he leaves one of them out where the boy is sure to spot it. After "fun and games" are over, the farang heads for the shower. If the boy is a thief, by the time he comes out of the shower the boy and the fake watch are both gone - before giving the boy his 'tip.' I loved that story!
