Hosts that don't host

This seems to be a terrible season for many businesses. Too few customers. But at least at one host bar the hosts don't seem to be helping themselves.

I have visited Ganymede in Jomtien several times. It is a good space but I have never seen it to be very crowded.

Last night in an effort to avoid the rain, 3 of us ran into Ganymede. We were very surprised to have a hard time ordering a drink because we were the only 3 customers. After sitting for a short while I went over to a group of hosts that were busy playing cards with each other. I asked "can we get a drink?" but it actually took a few seconds for them to decide who would wait on us!

After we were finally served our drinks, the waiter went back to play cards. We sat until the rain stopped (30 minutes??) and then had to go over and ask for our bill.

I understand that it might be boring as hell with no customers. But.......

Maybe they need little bells on the tables so you can call unattentive waiters to the table.

I hope you brought this to the boss's attention. I don't think he would be very happy to know he is paying his staff to play cards instead of taking care of customers, especially these days when so many bars are lucky to get any customers at all.

This is very unusual. At most host bars the boys are always very attentive.

This is exactly the kind of thing I've been talking about. If you had been treated well and the boys were attentive to you, you would almost certainly return next time you go to Jomtien Complex. Now, somehow I don't foresee you or your friends making a special trip to go to the same bar.

There are plenty of host bars in Jomtien Complex and every one of them want your business. I think you will probably go to someone else's bar next time, where you are welcomed and treated well. Who would want to spend time and money in a bar where the hosts act as if they're doing you a favor by paying any attention to you and where you can't get service even when you're the only ones there?

I feel that if the owner was there, the hosts would have been serving drinks.

Actually we sat a long time and would have each bought another drink but felt we did not want to "disturb" the hosts.

The owner should make it his business to know what's going on in his bar as far as possible & ensure it is well run.

I know he cannot be there all the time, but there are methods:

1 Have customer survey cards prominently located & a lockable box with a slot in the top to receive these.

2 Have a security camera.

3 Identify some responsible staff & nominate one as a deputy, having briefed him thoroughly on the requirements.

Which means none of them came around to check if you had finished your drinks and wanted another. I agree with z909 in that the boss can't be there all the time, but in any bar I would think the boss would want to make sure someone responsible is there. This is what happens when you leave a few kids in charge of your establishment. If the boss was there, then he needs to figure out that he ought to regularly come out and check on what's going on. If I was the boss and found out that my employees are busy playing cards and ignoring my customers, those employees would get a very quick education.

The situation that Pattaya Male describes was the same same at Corner Bar (with the exception of "A" who is great)! Sit around and beg the staff for a drink until they put that small bell on the tables. After that the service was almost instant at the tintinnabulation of that bell. Or maybe all farang should carry a bell with us?

During my stay in march/april not have had bad experience there in Ganymede. Only one time there have been many customers in the afternoon during happy hour. I only was there because they have free internet and 2 boys have been very interesting. They asked me every 5 min. if i want a new drink.

I like Ganymede. It's a place I can go with another farang and have a drink without any pushiness. I've even been there alone and didn't feel pressured by any of the hosts.

I've never been ignored, either, so I think I can say that the OP was there at an unlucky time. There is a mid-30's guy there whose name tag says "Joe"; he's not the manager but he seems to be the resident adult. According to him, the boss is usually home in the UK. He didn't point out to me who's officially running the place.

Next time I'm there I'll talk with him about the happy ground between too much attention vs. too little.
