Guest kjun12 Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 This weekend there are two shows at Queen Sirikit Center in Bangkok. One is a Travel Fair sponsored by the Bangkok Post and the other is a Discount Home Appliance show sponsored by Homeworks. Neither is worth the time it takes to get there. The Travel Fair booths are 99% Bangkok hotels trying to get someone into them at no real discount. The Homeworks show is even more of a waste of time. No savings to be had. Items show a price and then another "mark down" price. What a joke. The discount price is actually the usual price one will pay for these items at any place in BKK. Really pissed me off that I took the time to go to these shows. Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted May 30, 2010 Posted May 30, 2010 The Travel Fair booths are 99% Bangkok hotels trying to get someone into them at no real discount. This follows previous trends, alas. In severe market downturns, the top hotels do everything possible to keep room rates high. They'll throw in a lot of extras which most people might not normally pay for - like limousines to/from the airport, to make it look like you are getting a great deal. It's far better going through an agent at times like these. Why they don't just slash rates by 70% - 80% like the Siam Square traders have been doing for this week-end's hugely successful Silom Street Fair, I haven't the faintest idea. Silom was absolutely packed with shoppers yesterday. I hope Bangkok readers will go today to support those traders who lost almost everything in the Siam Square fires. Quote
Guest beachlover Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 Yeah, I don't get why you would travel all the way to some fair for a routine purchase like accommodation or flights, unless it was at ridiculous prices - but that would defeat the purpose of such businesses paying to have a stall there. For homeware it can be useful having lots of shops or brands t quickly browse through in the one place. Quote
Guest GaySacGuy Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 The fairs are hoping to stir up a business account or two, which would pay for all their trouble. Once commercial account could make some of these business prosper. Quote
Guest beachlover Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 Right... that could make sense. Going for corporate accounts and corporate events, rather than little 10k baht consumer purchases. Quote
