I'd definitely be in a bind. Would either try to fast-track a VISA for Kim, preferably a student VISA, or else I'd have to stay put. Well, we could always go vacation in Laos for a month or two, but then again, he has his family here.

Why not consider Malaysia if you have family there? It's Asian. It's friendly. It's cheap. Food, services and amenities are fantastic there. It's a short hop from Thailand. And I hear the immigration laws are designed to encourage more Westerners to settle or retire there (unlike Thailand). If anything, it could be a good temporary solution until things boil over.

Let's just hope that decisions like that don't need to be made. I highly doubt it though. We're talking 5000 people out of 65,000,000 causing civil unrest, so it's basically impossible for this to escalate much further. It's not like all of a sudden an extra 5,000,000 people will take up arms against the government.

Yeah but if the right things are in place these things can build momentum... 5,000 people can recruit/promote the cause to turn it into 50,000 people, 500,000 people and so on.

I agree, and you can find examples of what you are saying in the American revolution, the French revolution, the Italian revolution, and the Russian revolution. Sometimes it takes generations, but it does happen. I do not think this one will be that long down the road, as things do move faster now-a-days. Of couse there are two ways to counter this kind of popular awakening movement. Compromise like the British, and the Germans did with their people in 1848, or total rule of the gun, similar to what Burma has. What kind of country do you want to live in?

Looking closer to the country at hand... Unfortunately, Asia has a bit of a history of countries imploding. Think Cambodia and Burma. Malaysia and Singapore have come close to it at times too. Hopefully Thailand has progressed far enough that this would never happen.

As a frequent visitor... I would try to visit if it was safe enough, simply because I like Thai boys a lot and the nightlife is fantastic in Thailand. But if this was disrupted then I would definitely go elsewhere.

Otherwise, there are plenty of other places I enjoy visiting in Asia with good gay nightlife.

If you live there, I think Cambodia and Malaysia offer the two closest (and most easily accessible) alternatives to Thailand on the whole. Brazil is nice if you're retired or just after fun and can put up with some of its downsides.

Well, I like both... cute boys and handsome hunky (but not too hunky) boys.

Well that's news to me! Perhaps you can enlighten us. When, in the last 3 or 4 decades, have Malaysia and Singapore been anything but stable and continuing to develop as prosperous nations?

Why are we resurrection 3 month old posts?

I don't know myself. I certainly wish we would stick to current issues. I understand if an important topic needs to be resurrected but doing it to every post is tiresome. IMHO

Well without looking up specifics... back in the 50s/60s/70s Malaysia had its race riots and civil unrest. Singapore also had similar civil unrest to the point where curfews were declared and enforced. Obviously, neither got anywhere near as bad as Burma and Cambodia.
