Gaybutton Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 Philippine Gay Party on Ballot for the First Time By Elizabeth Yuan, CNN May 9, 2010 (CNN) -- A gay political party will be on the ballot Monday for the first time in the Philippines, where eight out of 10 households are Roman Catholics. The elections will determine whether Ang Ladlad ("Out of the Closet") -- which represents lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender Filipinos (LGBT) -- will get the maximum three seats allowable for a marginalized or underrepresented party in Congress. "We consider it a milestone in Philippine human rights," said Leila De Lima, head of the Commission on Human Rights in the Philippines. "They are really always victims of discrimination, exclusion and even violence." The Commission sided with Ang Ladlad when its legal fight to stand for elections reached the Supreme Court. Guest lvdkeyes Posted May 30, 2010 Posted May 30, 2010 Granted there has been a lot of news about gay priests, but the Catholic Church still teaches that homosexuality is a sin and most devout Catholics believe it. Quote

Yep....and that unfortunately means that they don't have a prayer to win many seats in the Phillipines which is about as catholic as countries get. Quote
Gaybutton Posted May 30, 2010 Author Posted May 30, 2010 Gaybutton, what does this mean? As far as I can tell it means a majority of Filipino people are Catholic. Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 As far as I can tell it means a majority of Filipino people are Catholic. Wikipedia says with a total population of 90 million as of 2009, about 92% - almost 86 million - are Catholics. 3 years ago the Catholic Church condemned a proposal by the Philippines government to spend $22 million on condoms and birth control pills for the less well off. The country's health authority claimed that unless birth rates were reduced, the country's population would double in 30 years. Little wonder the Catholic Church claims its worldwide membership is rising Quote
Guest beachlover Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 For such a predominantly catholic country, I wonder how a gay scene in the Philippines thrives at all... Doesn't it mean homosexuality goes heavily against their beliefs? The catholic church seems to do everything it can to undermine and oppose homosexual people. Quote
Guest GaySacGuy Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 Maybe you should check out GT pinned message??? Might be a good idea! Quote
Guest lvdkeyes Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 Mexico and Spain are also predominately Catholic countries. Spain allows gay marriage and parts of Mexico does too. Quote
Guest beachlover Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 True... I just wonder how these deeply religious countries deal with homosexuality and its visible existence in their community when the Catholic Church so vehemently opposes it. Or maybe when 92% of the population calls itself Catholic, only say, 40% are "devout" and the others just retain it because they were born with it, but may be quietly questioning it. Quote
