TotallyOz Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 I have been using CK (I think right name) at The Avenue. The one VERY gay guy goes a wonderful very close shave. It is exception and is only 200 baht. He is very gentle and thorough. If you are at the Avenue go to the 3rd Floor and right off the escalator it is right in front. Walk in. I also get haircuts there for 300 baht. Manicure and Pedicure for 300 baht each. These are the best manicures that I have had in LOS. The place is very friend and the guys that work there are gay and fun to talk to. Quote

My barber is 1/2 a kilometer down the road and 50 baht. He is very happy when I give him a 20 baht tip!! Same haircut in US....about $12 on up. Quote

Guest alaan Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 I would be keen to know if the OP went for a shave to make sure a mature beard needed to be removed skillfully or some shaping was required,I mean I quite like to pamper myself sometimes, but going to a barber for a shave is something I just dont get. I have to shave everyday, is this barbershop shave a daily ritual for some? The (short)length of time it takes to shave at home and also knowing the nooks and crannies of your own neck and face skin is something I would never trust to a third party. Haircuts require skill and that to me is certainly worth paying for and necessary, but it is taking me all my time not to describe a barbershop shave as both extravagent and lazy........it seems I have alreday said it. This is my opinion only, I am not criticising the OP, his money is his to do with as he pleases. Likewise with the haircut cost, I would expect Thailand to be a fraction of the UK cost, as GaySacGuy and gaybutton describe Bt50/ Quote
Guest Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 As far as I can see, there are several places in flashy locations charging about 250 baht for a haircut & it's quite easy to pay 60 baht at other very respectable places. I pay £9 in the UK & reckon 60 baht is about right considering lower labour costs in Thailand. The last place even had loads of pictures in the window, so I could point to the preferred style. Quote
Gaybutton Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 One of the things we expats learn to do is to stop comparing prices to the prices one would pay in our home countries. I suppose that's valid when one is in Thailand for short periods of time, but when you're here permanently the prices "back home" become irrelevant. Living in Thailand you start learning to compare prices not to "back home," but to other places in Thailand. While some still retain the notion that you get what you pay for, it doesn't always work that way, at least in Thailand. I would be willing to bet that the haircut you get in most of the 50 to 60 baht places is just as good as the 300 baht haircuts and if some of the barbers in the high-end places were replaced temporarily with the barbers in the "peon" places, you would never know the difference. By the way, how did Yassir Arafat always manage to have a 3-day beard stubble? Quote
Guest Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 My beard was fully grown and covered all my chins and it takes a skillful person to cut it. I have sensitive skin and have been cut so many times that I normally do it myself. When I found this guy that did it so well and gentle I had to keep using him and he has never cut me once. The beard was about 2 months old and there was most likely at least one birds nest of hair there. I never flinched at the price because I am so accustomed to NYC and LA prices and thought 200 or 300 baht was very reasonable for a place that is in a shopping mall. I can get my cut and the BF can walk around and shop or play games or whatever and we usually check in on the movies etc when there. In other words it is just convenient. I went with a friend in LA to get my hair cut and got there and the cost was 240 USD. I told them no thanks. My friend was upset as she had made the appointment for me and I walked around and did some shopping while she did her hair. No way on earth would I pay that much for a haircut anywhere. I do have friends that pay it on a regular basis but I grew up with a family of beauticians and my hair cuts were always free. Going to the most popular barber was never something I cared about. I want a man's cut. Fast and done well. I am sure I can get a cut cheaper than the price at the Avenue but for 300 baht, I think a bargain for the guy I use. I don't use anyone else there as I like this one guy. I use the same guy every time I am in Pattaya. I think the other men who responded are right as they live here and if I did perhaps I would look around for something better priced but I am usually only here for extended holidays and my hair keeps growing less and less and the few times I need a haircut, I find the Avenue is quick and easy and I love the service I get there. TOQ: I was doing the shave for you. I am saddened that you didn't notice. I guess I'll have to go back for more trimming. Quote

I have to shave everyday, is this barbershop shave a daily ritual for some? I've never had one but I've heard that when you get a barber shave, it's a very close and thorough shave so you don't need to shave for a few days (or in my case it might be two weeks). I guess that's the appeal/attraction of it over doing it yourself. That and imagining you're an Italian-American mafia boss. I think I would be scared to have someone else with a bloody sharp razor go at my face. It takes me less than a minute to shave myself I get a very good shave with my trusty Gillette Fusion Razor and Fusion Hydra Gel! Spending $240 for a haircut, which (at least for me) would only last 3-4 weeks before requiring another one. I've no problem spending $2k on a suit or $400 for shoes... but any more than $60 for a haircut seems a ridiculous waste to me... unless you're an actor or model (i.e. paid for looks). Quote
