Guest RichLB Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Residents in the Jomtien Complex area will be glad to know that there is a lot of work going on in that big white elephant that's been empty for years. They've torn out walls and gutted the inside of the first floor. There are also new awnings on the second floor. There is a sign on the chain link fence around the perimeter that says a "Bon Marche" will be openning "1 - 8 - 2010". Does anyone know what a Bon Marche is? I assume it's French and hope it means a supermarket. Quote

Guest RichLB Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Doing a Google search finds Bon Marche to be a ladies clothing store Good grief! I sure hope that's not what's going in there. If so, it's going to be absolutely huge. Maybe it's just referring to one of the small row whops that might be openning up along the side. Quote

Guest RichLB Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 One site has it as a "middle-aged" ladies store!! There's still hope. I know there is a rental office over by The Venue attempting to rent out spaces along the edge of the white elephant. This morning I noticed that an exterior wall revealing the cavernous innards of the building had been torn out. Workers appear to be putting in a new floor. From what you can see of the inside, it is a huge area - larger than Tops on 2nd Road. At least, something big is going in there finally. I'm still hoping for a supermarket. Quote
Guest Astrrro Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Talking about Jomtien Complex, popped in for a rare visit late last night and discovered quite a few ladyboys working at the Party Times Bar. Anyone know if the 300 baht barfine includes a shorttime room upstairs? Any recommended short time rooms in Jomtien Complex? Quote
Guest richsilver Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 In fact, very little work is going on there. The awnings were put up some two years ago when it was rumoured to be a Tony's Gym going in (never happened). The Tony's people completely re-did the huge staircase with a very elegant glass treatment, only to have the entire structure torn out when the walls were demolished and all the connectors to the adjacent buildings were removed. At that time they opened up the rental office. I went in there (they gave me a lovely canvas shopping bag!) and was told it was going to be a Tops Suermarket (never happened). There are now just a few workers piddleing around making some sort of little concrete thingie on the floor with a pile of sand and a few bags of concrete -- hardly the kind of construction for a large supermarket. I've pretty much lost all hope of a real supermarket. It looks like it maybe just some low end night market kind of affair (like they did there a year or so ago and failed miserably). I'm very disappointed! Quote
kokopelli Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Le Bon Marche is a well known department store in Paris. Normally a bon marche is a "good deal" or "inexpensive". Quote

For my knowledge of french and France this will be a SUPERMARKET My question now: does these construction works disturb Tui's Place or Avalon Beach Resort Hotel? Thank you! Quote
Guest RichLB Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 In fact, very little work is going on there. You're right that it doesn't appear to be a major construction project - but something significant is going on. If you look up, you'll see that they have removed the upstairs balcony railing at regular intervals - no clue why. They also appear to have torn down an entire corner of the 4 story building. Quote
Gaybutton Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 My question now: does these construction works disturb Tui's Place or Avalon Beach Resort Hotel? Thank you! Not at all. It's quite a distance away. There is no effect and you will not hear construction noise. Quote

Sorry Rich, all that work was done many months ago when it was supposed to be a Tops supermarket. The current round of work is, in fact, quite minimal (there were three guys working this morning doing touch-up painting!). Quote
Guest kotter Posted February 20, 2010 Posted February 20, 2010 I believe what I said a month ago, that it will have individual stalls. ( like in the beach end of Mikes Dept Store), until the other issues are sorted out with City Hall! Quote

Guest RichLB Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 Lo and behold, walking from Jomtien Complex Condotel to Two Faces this morning for breakfast, I discovered the entire outside walls on the ground floor of the White Elephant had disappeared. On the corner is now a large "under the second floor" outside shop beautifully decorated with flowers, pak tee panits (those wying ladies), and food tables, and tables with clothes on them. The floor is new, but the rest of the exposed lower floor just has smooth concrete. It doesn't look like it's going to be a super market there, but lots of stuff is apparently on the way. Don't know if there is going to be anything on the second or third floors, though. Quote
