Guest run26mile Posted February 13, 2010 Posted February 13, 2010 I'm interested in any recommendations on purchasing custom tailored suits in Bangkok. What is the quality of the tailors? Do most tailors have cloth that would be suitable for someone living in New York City (i.e. not an ultra light cloth). What price should I expect to pay per suit? Can I get the suit made within 3 days? Quote
macaroni21 Posted February 14, 2010 Posted February 14, 2010 I'm interested in any recommendations on purchasing custom tailored suits in Bangkok. What is the quality of the tailors? Do most tailors have cloth that would be suitable for someone living in New York City (i.e. not an ultra light cloth). What price should I expect to pay per suit? Can I get the suit made within 3 days? Important caveat: My experience limited to only 2 suits made about 2 years apart from two different tailors. The quality is passable but not great, but considering the lower price, I've been happy. On the second occasion, I asked for some specific features which they never quite understood and in the end didn't deliver accordingly. I figured out what the problem was. The tailor who takes your measurements does not do the tailoring. He passes on the key measurements to a subcontractor. With such a production chain, they are good at handling the basic measurements and features, but ask for any variations and they get mighty confused... or lost in translation between shop and subcontractor. So I smiled and accepted the "standard" suit/cut they could produce and got my special suit made in Singapore instead (at 3 times the price). Of course it now means that I have one more suit than I need. (I also suspect that if you have a non-standard body shape, they may have similar problems coping.) I have no experience asking for heavy material. I've forgotten the price range (US$100?) The shops put their prices up front ... but beware, that's for suits made of the cheap material. Shop around and ask for a more precise quote. Yes they can do it in three days (I think it's the minimum), but as I mentioned... don't expect them to handle special requests if you're relying on the production chain method. Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted February 14, 2010 Posted February 14, 2010 My experience of tailoring here was not good - and too long ago to be of much use now. However, friends have given me three suggestions: 1. You can find good tailors, but they will usually cost more than the average cheap tailoring shop. Make sure you have time for a couple of fittings. In particular, you have to make sure that they give you enough room around the shoulders and in the crotch. 2. Larger tailors, especially those catering to farang, will carry a variety of cloth weights, but may not have a wide selection of heavier cloths. The tax on imported cloth is quite high. So if you want a specific weight/colour/pattern, bring the cloth with you - if that's possible. 3. Also, bring a suit for them to copy - again if it's possible. Tailors can then make virtually an exact copy with the variations they find when taking your measurements. Quote
Guest frodo Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 A tailor I use in Pattaya has satisfied myself and several friends with suits, jackets, pants and shirts, all made to order and in some cases with special requests. The Tailor Shops are more expensive as they are a usually a front only and they use people like my tailor to make the orders. The quality of materials and workmanship is excellent. Quote
Guest gay_grampa Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 I have had two suits made in Bangkok and both were awful. So I asked a farang friend who is the GM of a big hotel in Sukhumvit where he got his made. Hong Kong was the answer; he goes twice a year to a tailor who has his measurements on file. Bangkok tailors make good shirts but the trousers are usually so oversized that you end up looking like someone in a 1950's film. The jackets are suitable for a circus clown and the sleeve linings are never properly cut or sewn in. I am sure that there must be a good tailor somewhere in Bangkok because if you look at the photos of Government ministers or Royalty then their clothes fit very well. Where is this man hiding? Quote
Gaybutton Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 A tailor I use in Pattaya has satisfied myself and several friends Aren't you going to tell us the name and location of this tailor? Where is this man hiding? Probably in Hong Kong . . . Quote

Guest frodo Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 Aren't you going to tell us the name and location of this tailor? Near Tukcom but too difficult to explain exact location. Anyone interested can PM me as the tailor does not speak English so needs my bf to explain details etc. Quote
Guest davidp Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 I have been happy with Excelsior in Bangkok. It is near my favourite gay hotel Tarntawan. I usually make my clothes there and they are great. I pay 900 bht for a shirt with them. Quote

I will try Excelsior next time. Quote
Guest lvdkeyes Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 In Pattaya I pay 800 baht for custom made shirts. I often buy cotton fabric in Vietnam or Malaysia and have shirts made here in Pattaya at the tailor shops behind Tuk Com for 300 baht each. Cotton in interesting prints is hard to find in Thailand for some crazy reason. Quote
