Mr. Moo

In the Thai language "moo" means pork. On the access road at the Big-C at the junction of Pattaya Tai and Sukhumvit there is a row of shop houses. One of them, between the parking lot entrance and Sukhumvit is Mr. Moo. I've passed by many times, but yesterday I stopped in to see what they carry.

He has quite a good selection of pork products, including several different sausages, one of which is labeled "American Sausage," something difficult to find in Pattaya at reasonable prices. He also has a variety of different types of bacon, British style meat pies, etc.

His prices are quite reasonable and apparently he does the curing and packaging himself. I decided to try some American style "streaky" bacon. A 255 gram package for 67 baht seemed reasonable enough to me.

This morning I made my own breakfast at home and tried the bacon. I was very pleasantly surprised. I thought it was some of the best bacon I've ever had, certainly much better than any of the commercially packaged bacon I've tried in Pattaya. It crisps up very well and has an excellent delicate flavor and texture.

For those of you who do your own cooking, you might want to stop in, see what they have and perhaps give some of their products a try. From now on, when I want those kinds of products, that's where I'm going to do my buying.

Thanks GB. One thing that surprises me in Thailand is that one cannot find well smoked meat. They say it is smoked but I can't taste it.

Hmmmmmmm, that all depends on how you look at it. I've discovered that a great many young gentlemen around here have had their meat smoked, often well smoked, quite a number of times . . .

There is a wholesale place, but they will see retail that has the best smokiest American bacon I have ever had, here or in US. It is called AKA. From Pattaya Klang going east you turn left on the first soi after Foodland. You will see a sign for In Town or Town In Hotel, not sure which. It is about 50 meters up that soi on the right side.

I finally got around to trying AKA. They have many items that I've never seen elsewhere. I did try their "streaky bacon," the same kind I tried from Mr. Moo. I liked the bacon at Mr. Moo better than the AKA bacon. I think locals ought to give both of them a try. You're bound to prefer one over the other and the quality at each is much better than anything I've ever found in any of the grocery stores. Both AKA and Mr. Moo have many products besides just bacon. I think it's worth checking out both of them.

When I want bacon, sausage, and several other products, AKA and Mr. Moo are going to be the places I shop for them from now on.

Yesterday I bought bacon at AKA. Later I was at Makro. They had the same bacon with AKA label for 160 baht per kg MORE than AKA.

Sheeeeesh! I'm not sure what the weight was, but the packet I bought at AKA had about 12 slices of bacon. You know how much I paid? 46 baht! The price was similarly low at Mr. Moo. I think I'll stick to buying at those two places . . .

I wish I knew the weight of the package you bought.

What you bought was 200 gms of American Streaky Plain, not the smoked bacon. There is a big difference in the taste. 200 gms for 64 baht works out to 320 baht per kg. At Makro they sell it for 380 baht per kg.

Ok, I thought I bought smoked bacon, but you know much more about these things than I do, so I defer to you. Next time I'll ask specifically for smoked bacon and see how I like it. All of what is sold at Mr. Moo and AKA beats hell out of anything I've ever tried from the grocery stores and I definitely have no complaints if it's less expensive. And even more important, it sure is gooooooood!

If you liked it I think you will like the smoked bacon even more. There is much more flavor.

I stopped in at Mr. Moo today and bought some streaky bacon, 255gm for 67 baht. They don't carry smoked bacon, so I'll give it a try next time I stop at AKA.

Mr. Moo has a web site at: Welcome to Mr Moo Co. Ltd.
