Questions For You

Hello everyone. It has been many years since I traveled to Thailand, but I have been there 12 times. In the 80's and 90's I just loved it there, and found the guys and all of the people to be so nice. I love Thai Smiles.

Now, I am planning to return for a two week visit. I am wondering what you guys would recommend for this visit. Bangkok for sure, but to choose between Pattaya and Chaing Mai is difficult. I used to love both. I have seen all of the tourist sights as of ten years ago, so is there anything new?

Being a little older now, I cannot stay as cheaply as I did when I was younger. Some comfort is part of my program now. Are there any newer hotels that are nice and not too expensive?

Also, I love Thai men, but the younger guys need a little more seasoning for me. Someone in his 20's, with a nice fit, and smooth body, works for me. Muscle is okay, but not a big deal for me. A smile is very important. Of course, those comments lead me to ask which bars in Bangkok and Chiang Mai (or Pattaya) would suit me best.

Is this too much too ask in one post? If so, I can break it down some more.

But, thanks for your advice. I really appreciate getting the inside story from guys who know.

I don't think any of us can tell you specifically which bars in either city are going to have the boys you like. What I can tell you is there are a hell of a lot more bars in Pattaya than in Chiang Mai and most are within walking easy distance of the gay hotels.

Based on what you are saying, I would think the Sunee Plaza bars in Pattaya is your best bet. Between the open-air beer bars and the go-go bars, you're bound to easily find what you're looking for.

As for accommodations, I would suggest Howard's Guesthouse ( http://www.howards-pattaya.net ) or Two Guys Guesthouse ( http://www.twoguysguesthouse.info ). Both are gay accommodations, inexpensive, popular, and less than a two minute walk to Sunee Plaza.

Since boys seems to be what you are looking for, then there's no question. You want to come to Pattaya.

You can even find all the boys you want without setting foot in the bars at all. There are plenty of freelancers around the Sunee Plaza area. There are also plenty at the gay beach area.

You might also want to look at our threads about the gay personals sites (Gay Romeo seems to be the most popular):

If you want some help if you decide upon Pattaya as your destination, I am always very happy to take people around personally if I am in town and available. If you want to meet me and have me do that, all you have to do is send me an Email and let me know when you're coming. My Email is gaybutton@gmail.com

Just land in bangkok, go with your gut and head to Pattaya or Chiang mai. The thai smiles and type you desire will find you. No doubt about it. Enjoy!

As the saying goes, ronnie4you, "seek and ye shall find". Go to Pattaya and check out all the bars.

One night in Boyztown and one night in Sunee and then maybe Jomtien, and you will find what you are looking for. Likes and dislikes are so personal that no one can really advise you of what is best for you. Enjoy the hunt.

If the gay nightlife is your main priority, then Pattaya offers the widest choice of gogo bars and can be the lowest cost destination (reasonable bar prices & low cost accommodation). Going to the beach is cheap, if that's what you like doing.

Bangkok has temples, nice boat rides, China town etc etc to occupy your day. I find money tends to leave my wallet more quickly when in Bangkok.

However, I think it's worth starting here. You might even do it cheaply, if following the budget hotel recommendations & not visiting the gogo bars too much.

Chiang Mai either requires a long land journey or a couple of cheap air tickets. Do this is if you want to see the tourist sites of Chiang Mai and/or the surrounding area as a priority.

If it's nightife you want, go to Pattaya.

Just realised you are there for two weeks....best to do a little more than BKK & Pattaya, or a repeat visit to Chiang Mai.

Why not live a little & do something fresh in the middle?

Stay in BKK for a few nights (3~4 should do it).

Then go to Siem Reap, Cambodia to see the amazing Angor Wat complex (2~3 days, ie 3~4 nights). Preferably travel overland on the way there, but you could fly both ways cheaply.

Then go to Pattaya for some relaxation.

As an aside, I'm curious as to why you recommend traveling overland to get there. I haven't made the trip myself, but I have heard that the roads are horrible.

I would have to disagree with z909. The OP is here for only two weeks and I wouldn't waste those few precious days traveling. He has seen Chiang Mai (years ago) so I agree with GB, Pattaya should be his destination of choice. Four or five days in Bangkok (at max) and the rest in Pattaya.

I do appreciate the advice. Perhaps I misled a bit if the thought was that bars interested me the most. People interest me the most, so the one suggestion that I just arrive and follow my instincts might be a good one. I did decide not to go too Chiang Mai. I have been to Siem Reap, but not Phnom Penh, so that might be a side trip for me.

Hotel recommendations> Thanks.

As an aside, I traveled overland to Angkor Wat and the road was horrible, but I recently was told by someone that the roadwork is complete and the land route is a good way to go.

For where?

For Bangkok and Pattaya. I mentioned I had not been there for awhile. I used to stay at Ambiance. Is it still good?

(I found the other forum to learn about Phnom Penh.)

Just for information, there's a good thread on this site started on August 14 -

In Pattaya both The Ambiance and Le Cafe Royale are quite popular. If you stayed before at The Ambiance you might be pleased to know that now they have an elevator.

In Bangkok, the Tarntawan Place is popular if you wish to be in the Silom-Suriwong gay area.

You get to see some of Thailand & Cambodia that way. The road from the border to Siem Reap is poor, but under continuous improvement. Last time I took a $32 taxi from Siem Reap to the border in about 2 hours 20 minutes. This is no hardship whatsoever. Obviously a bus or a trip in the wet season would be slower.

The 6:20 ish train out of Bangkok gets to Aranya Prathet about 1:00 pm. You then take a 60 baht tuk tuk to the border & get a taxi to Siem Reap (probably about $40). The Cambodian border town of Poipet is not so nice, so best to just get a taxi & leave.

On the Thai side, of course buses are quicker than the train 3~4 hours from Bangkok.

It seems easier to get a good deal on the taxis when leaving Siem Reap.

I wouldn't recommend travelling overland in both directions in a 2 week trip.

I disagree about 2 weeks being too short.

3~4 nights is enough to re-acquaint yourself with Bangkok.

Anyone who HASN'T been there before gets so see somewhere NEW &really special in the middle of the trip.

Then after a short flight & taxi/bus journey, you have nearly a week in Pattaya.

Should be no need to sleep alone on any night of the trip either  .

If you go to Phnom Penh, perhaps it is better to fly both ways, as the extra 5 hours land trip is probably a waste of time for someone who has been to the country before. Probably go for 3 nights in Phnom Penh, rather than 4.

Squeezing in a Cambodia trip is probably less attractive for someone who has been there before.
