Guest Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 Consider a hypothetical excursion up through North Thailand & Laos (or to Vietnam). If the tourist meets nice freelancer on the way through Thailand, is it a good idea to bring him along on the trip? Laos has laws prohibiting Laotians from sleeping with westerners, unless married. Whilst there are some guys on Gay Romeo & apparently a few cruising around Vientiane, the prostitution scene in Laos is quite limited. [i gather Vietnam may have similar restrictions] Bringing someone along from Thailand would circumvent the issue of sleeping with Laotians. There should be no problem at all with hotels if both people are adults & check into together. Downside: Quite a few hotel rooms may lack a room safe, therefore there may be no way of securing cash & cameras overnight. Living expenses may increase slightly. Of course it may restrict opportunities to interact with the locals. Also, would the Thais ID card be sufficient to cross the border? Quote
Gaybutton Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 A Thai can cross into Laos and back again to Thailand without paying fees. Laos may have such laws, but they are enforced about as much as Thailand's prostitution laws. In other words, it's a non-issue and you have nothing to worry about when having a 'liaison' with a Laotian boy in Laos. Just make sure he's at least 18 years old. Quote

Gaybutton Posted November 16, 2009 Posted November 16, 2009 Thais do not need a visa for Vietnam either, but Americans do. True. I forget the fee for farang trying to enter Laos. I think it's about US $30, but if you are entering by land, you can get it at the Friendship Bridge. By air, I believe it's available when you land at the airport in Vientiane. I believe, and again I'm not certain, the fee for a visa to go to Vietnam is about US $50. Lvdkeyes, can you help us with the correct amount for Vietnam? Quote
Guest lvdkeyes Posted November 16, 2009 Posted November 16, 2009 I got my letter authorizing VN visa online for $25, then I paid 1000 baht at the airport in VN. I see now the fee is $19.99. It says the stamp fee is $25, but you will pay 1000 baht unless you have USD. http://www.myvietnamvisa.com Quote
Guest GaySacGuy Posted November 16, 2009 Posted November 16, 2009 If you have the right boy, it can be a lot of fun, and somebody to sightsee and enjoy local attactions other than the gay scene. As above, borders to Laos and Vietnam are no problem for Thai boys with their ID card. Quote

Lvdkeyes, can you help us with the correct amount for Vietnam? If it helps any, I picked up a tourist visa for Vietnam a few months ago in Kuala Lumpur. 30 day visa costs 180 RM ($60 CAD) and takes one week to process. You can also get a 48 hour turnaround time for 240 RM ($80 CAD). Quote
Guest lvdkeyes Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 http://www.myvietnamvisa.com is cheaper. Quote

No need to get conned into paying any non-existent fees there then. The following link has a few suggestions, but the only hote for Luang Prabang gets panned on Trip Advisor. Laos Link Quote
