Gaybutton Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 Many of you will remember the highly popular ICON Show in Pattaya, which closed several years ago. Now the previous owners have opened and established an entire new show and venue in Chiang Mai. I received the following via Email: ____________________ Last weekend David Shrubsole, his business partner David Martin and David’s companion of many years Khun Eak, invited me to Chiang Mai for the opening of their new Play House cabaret. It was previously known as Simon Cabaret, but the whole building and site has been completely rebuilt and, interestingly, deliberately using recycled materials. The premier show was attended by seven members of the Thai Royal family from Chiang Mai, 2 ambassadors and 4 consulates, the national director of TAT and 15 hotel managers. There are 26 cast members and 55 staff. I was very surprised at how professional the dancers and the entire one-hour show was, with 14 set changes and 225 costumes. The theatre seats 344 and was packed. There are two shows nightly at 8pm and 10pm and based on what I saw I can through recommend you see the show if and when you are next in Chiang Mai. I have attached some photos which I asked Khun Aopi the Director of Communications & Public Relations to send me. Best regards Quote
dapitt Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 Happy to see this. I'll certainly stop in a time or two during my next visit to Chiang Mai. Quote
Guest lvdkeyes Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 Is it called Play House? Where is it located? Quote
Guest lavenderlannahotel Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 Is it called Play House? Where is it located? The Play House (yes that is the name) is located off Chang Puak Road in the Mecure Hotel complex. The hotel is between the Circle Soi and the Free Guy Soi if that helps which places it right in the middle of the gay area. One of the owners of our hotel and our Show Director for Lavender Cabaret was in attendance on the opening night and both have very good reports. There are lovely bars outside the main entrance and the stage and show are very well done. It is more of a dance show than a cabaret show with superb dancing and dance numbers and a large number of very cute guys (including two who were hired for Lavender Cabaret but ended up working for Khun David instead). This venue is well worth a visit on your next trip to Chiang Mai and is one more reason to visit the Rose of the North, Chiang Mai. Quote
Guest fountainhall Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 The Play House (yes that is the name) is located off Chang Puak Road in the Mecure Hotel complex. The hotel is between the Circle Soi and the Free Guy Soi Simon's location was about 200 meters west of the Mercure hotel - i.e. turn into the soi as though going to the Mercure Hotel, and just continue past it. It's on the right. You can't miss it. The old Simon show was getting a bit tired before it closed with a lot of boys who seemed to be dancing for themselves rather than the audience. The new show sounds much more professional. Quote
Gaybutton Posted November 12, 2009 Author Posted November 12, 2009 I've also sent in a request for further information, including whether tickets are available at other outlets around town, the ticket prices, whether van or car service from hotel to show and back to hotel is available, and whether the is, or will be, a web site. Of course, I'll post the information once I have it. Maybe someone else can get the information and post before I can. Quote
PattayaMale Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 I have great memories of ICON. The former staff was so much fun. I remember taking some to Xzyte or was it Hollywood??? No matter, it was fun. The show, from the pictures, looks much different than the show in Pattaya. But it was always very professionally done. Quote
