Guest fountainhall Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 This is a weird article and I am confused by the math. The survey covered 16,000 volunteers. Presumably this means 50% were given the genuine vaccine and 50% a placebo. It says initial results show 31% were protected against the HIV virus. That seems to imply that 5,520 poor souls ended up being infected! Yet it goes on to say that only 51 became infected. Did I miss something here? I am also curious about the methodology used to conduct the research. Presumably all volunteers were tested in advance and found to be HIV negative. Having been vaccinated, were they then encouraged to have unsafe sex to see if the vaccine worked? Who would volunteer for such research? Quote
