Christmas in Thailand

This will probably seem like a strange request but here goes

Are there any Christmas concerts or other Christmas events in Thailand (BKK or Pattaya)?

There will be plenty! One time I was in Phuket at Christmas and the hotel had a Christmas beach party and actually had a Santa Claus parachute in!

In Pattaya there will be all kinds of bar, disco, and karaoke parties. Many restaurants will put on Christmas dinners.

Be careful about which hotel you stay in if you are going to be here for Christmas. If your hotel is going to have a Christmas party or Christmas buffet, they are very likely to make it mandatory for their guests. In other words, you will be charged for it whether you attend or not. That is a standard practice in Thailand, so you might want to check in advance about that with the hotel where you will stay.

As far as concerts go, Bangkok is the place to go for a concert. There isn't much in the way of western culture in Pattaya.

The having mandatory Christmas dinners for hotel guests comes from UK, it is common there, especially in smaller hotels.

Thanks GB and lvdkeyes. I will be arriving next month so I have a little time to map out good holiday plans now that I know there may be options. I will have an apartment in BKK but will visit Pattaya on some weekends and possibly for a holiday event with friends.

It would be great to come across a Christmas sing-a-long concert or other type of event.

The problem with most music organisations in Thailand is that they do not have websites and it's extremely difficult to find out their concert schedules. I don't know of any orchestral concerts of Christmas music. The only other relevant concert has already been posted on gaythailand. The Bangkok Combined Choir has performances of Handel's Messiah and Haydn's Creation in Bangkok on the following dates -

11 December, Thailand Cultural Centre

12 December, Wattana Church

13 December, Holy Redeemer Church

I doubt if both works are being presented in full as that will be a good 4 hours+ of music - even before you add in intervals. It may just be the choruses and a few of the solos, which will still be well worth hearing. Both works are very appropriate this year as it's the 250th anniversary of the death of Handel and the 200th of the death of Haydn!

I had a great Christmas in Phuket. The Club One Seven has a great Christmas Eve party every year with lots of free food, entertainment and fun. It is held by the pool.

CCBloom in Phuket also has an annual Christmas Party that is a lot of fun, but I don'tknow the date.

At the risk of sounding like Scrooge; I truely enjoy having Christmas in Thailand without all of the marketing of gifts, meals, and other assorted profit producing activities. I think that the best part of Christimas in Thailand is that for Thais Christmas is a non event. Remember that Thailand is 93% Buddhist and most Thai people, out side of the tourist or retail industries, have absolutely no idea what Christmas is...or for that matter who Christ was. If anything Thais think that Christmas is just one more excuse to get drunk and have fun.

So, if you want to have a great Christmas in Thailand IMHO forget Christmas Western style and enjoy a great Thai Christmas afternoon at the beach with a massage, before dinner cocktails, a light dinner, and a "four hand" massage for desert!!! Now that is my idea of Christmas in Thailand!!(<:))

No need to be apologetic. One of the ideas of visiting a Bhuddist country during Xmas is to avoid all the Christian imperialism & tat that you get with the main annual marketing event of the Christian religion business(es).

Some of the Christians have the cheek to call me Scrooge for not wanting to celebrate their religion. Really annoys me. They should go & get a life & not try to tell me how to live mine.

These people even think there is some virtue in religion.

I love being in thailand at Christmas. A group of us always had Christmas Eve dinner at the Landmark Hotel in Bkk follow by a walk around town just enjoying the lighting along the streets. Another treat was a trip to mall Bankapi which is always decked out in holiday festivites. Christmas is a special time for the thais especially those that are involved with the farang element. Most bars have Christmas parties and the boys really enjoy the gift giving even on a much smaller scale.

Thanks so much. I hope that I will make it to one of these performances in BKK. It would be nice to take a couple of my friends there to see Handel's Messiah. This will be the first time in years that I have not performed in the Messiah so it should be interesting to just sit back and enjoy some of the sounds of the season.
