Gaybutton Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 If you are looking for inexpensive, plain, but good food, try the LK Renaissance on Soi Diana Inn. It's nothing fancy, but it is certainly popular. The place was packed when we went. Richard Burk, owner of the Amor Restaurant, was my dinner partner. Tonight was his night off and he likes trying new places. A friend of his, Bobby, is the owner. As you can see by the attached business card, they offer all you can eat specials every day. They offer several different choices, but they can't fit onto a business card. For example, on their pizza night they offer several different kinds of pizza. On their burgers night they offer hamburgers, hot dogs, salad, and fries. They ask that along with it you order a minimum of one drink. Soft drinks are 30 to 25 baht. In all honesty, I thought it would be nothing but cheap crap, but it turned out to be unexpectedly good and good quality. Everything is home-made. Even the hamburger buns are home made and they were also good. Richard and I both enjoyed it and we'll be back. Depending on individual taste, I don't really know whether this restaurant is going to be your cup of tea or not, but I think it's certainly worth a try. It is not a buffet. On your table there will be slips of paper with all the available items of the evening listed. You simply check off what you want. If you want more, you just fill out another slip. The service was good and it was fast. One complaint many people have is breakfast. Many breakfast places in Pattaya don't open until 9:00 or 10:00am. Lk Renaissance opens for breakfast at 7:00am. It is also an all you can eat for 99 baht breakfast. The serve everything from eggs any style to pancakes, French toast, sausage, bacon, etc. Sounds like an excellent breakfast deal. I'll be trying it soon. If you're not sure of the location, Soi Diana Inn can be accessed from both Second Road and Soi Buakhao. If you are coming from Third Road, go down the soi that goes past the Cartier bar and the Opey de Place hotel. Cross Soi Buakhao and keep going. The restaurant is about halfway down the soi on the right. Of course, if you're coming from Second Road, go to the Diana Inn hotel and turn right. Strangely enough, that's Soi Diana Inn. The restaurant is about halfway up the soi between Second Road and Soi Buakhao. If you drive a car, parking is no problem. Close to Soi Buakhao is the Metropole Hotel. Just tell the security guard you are going to the LK Renaissance restaurant and you're allowed to park there. Breakfast is served from 7:00am to 2:00pm. The daily specials are served from 3:00pm to 11:00pm Quote
Guest painai Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 Just to let you know, I went last night with 3 friends. The music on the tv was playing very loud videos. We all ordered our chicken selections on the paper, but all got the very same thing when the food came, a mixed platter of chicken--nothing to do with what we had ordered. My friend, who knows chicken, commented that the grease used for the chicken was definitely old grease. The big plus for the place is the price--only 99 baht. Plus, the noise on the street from the girlie bars seems peaceful once you get out of the place. Quote
Guest lvdkeyes Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 We tried a new place tonight. (new to us). If you like Indian food you have to try Ali Babba on Pattaya Klang between Second Rd and Beach Road on the south side of the street. The place is nicely decorated, the waiters friendly, efficient and not bad to look at either. The food was some of the best Indian food I have had anywhere. Three of us shared onion bhadji, chicken tikka wawa masala, vegetable biryani, chicken tabdoori, and garlic naan. We each had mango lassi and water. Pappadums came complimentary with 4 dipping sauces. Total bill for 3 of us was 1000 baht. We all agreed we would go back for sure. Quote
Gaybutton Posted September 2, 2009 Author Posted September 2, 2009 Just to let you know, I went last night with 3 friends. The music on the tv was playing very loud videos. I agree about the noise level. Much too loud for my taste. I can't speak to what you had last night, but we enjoyed what we had tonight. I don't expect anything all that great for 99 baht, but I have no complaints about the food we had this evening. But I can do without the noise. I think this is the kind of place most people will either like or swear they'll never return. Quote
Guest Astrrro Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 It is also an all you can eat for 99 baht breakfast. Close to Third Road is the Metropole Hotel. Breakfast is served from 7:00am to 2:00pm. Great find GB! Please let us know if the breakfast includes coffee and if not, how much, and must you pay by the cup? Think you mean near Soi Buakhao is the LK Metropole. I have the opposite complaint as 2PM is on the early side for breakfast. Quote
Guest thaiworthy Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 I have the opposite complaint as 2PM is on the early side for breakfast. 2 PM for breakfast is early for you? What time do you get to bed? Quote
Gaybutton Posted September 2, 2009 Author Posted September 2, 2009 Please let us know if the breakfast includes coffee and if not, how much, and must you pay by the cup? Think you mean near Soi Buakhao is the LK Metropole. I doubt that I'll be letting you know about breakfast any time soon. I usually don't eat breakfast at all. When I do I normally make my own at home. It's rare for me to go out for breakfast more than once or twice a month. But sooner or later I'll get there. I'll certainly try it next time I do go out for breakfast. If any of my friends want to give it a try very soon, I'll go. Yes, you're right. The LK Metropole is close to Soi Buakhao, not Third Road. I have now made the change to my original post to correct that error. Quote
Guest Astrrro Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 2 PM for breakfast is early for you? What time do you get to bed? Most nights about 4AM or so. I've always been a night person. In Thailand it makes even more sense to avoid the daytime heat. And teerak works at night. And friends want to hit the bars at night. And USA stock market closes 3AM Bangkok time and to me it's a great specator sport. One of my favorite breakfast places is near the Yensabai Condo but they stop serving at 2:30. There are two places there, Sanong and Arch de Something. I used to prefer Sanong but Arche has an 85 baht breakfast that besides the OJ, toast, coffee, bacon, ham, sausage, also includes a croissant and a little cheese. Quote
Guest taylorsquare Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 99 baht for a full breaky sounds great. Pity I missed it when I was in Pattaya. Another place I found and was cheap was, I think, called Orange or something similar in the Jomtien Complex. I can't remember the name, but it's right at the very end of the complex down from Dick's Cafe. Mushroom soup with bread was 50 baht. They sold Thai and farang food and also had a night time singer. Guest Astrrro Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 Lek Hotel (2nd Road and Soi 12) has a brakfast buffet including unlimited coffee for (I think) 110 baht. Ends at 1 so haven't gone yet. But what's exciting about GB's find is that the LK Rennasiance is probably the the most upscale hotel that markets itself to mongers while the Lek is a craphole so it's surprising to see a bargain brekkie there. Gaybutton Posted September 3, 2009 Author Posted September 3, 2009 One of my favorite breakfast places is near the Yensabai Condo but they stop serving at 2:30. For you late risers, plenty of restaurants in Pattaya offer all-day breakfasts. I'm an early riser. It's rare for me to wake up and already can see daylight. I'm glad to know that at least a few restaurants start serving early. Bobby, at the LK Renaissance, said he is connected to both the LK Renaissance and the LK Meropole. He said they get a lot of Japanese tourists and they are very early risers, so the main reason the restaurant opens early is to accommodate them. Quote
Gaybutton Posted September 3, 2009 Author Posted September 3, 2009 the Lek is a craphole I don't know that I'd go as far as that in a description, but not too many years ago the breakfast buffet there was very good and probably the best bargain in town. Unfortunately in recent years the quality has gone way downhill. When I do go out for breakfast, I won't go there anymore. What I enjoy about a breakfast buffet or an all-you-can eat place is the fact that you can have the food items you want at the quantities you want. I prefer that to many of the menu restaurants, although so far my favorite breakfasts are at the Continental Bakery, Lindas, and Papa David's. The best breakfast buffet I have experienced in Pattaya is at the Marriott. I have never tried the breakfasts at other high class hotels, mainly because I don't see a need to spend and arm and a leg for breakfast. In my opinion, the best brunch is the Sunday Brunch at Casa Pascal. You do pay an arm and a leg for it there, but every once in a while I think it's well worth it. If you're looking for a brunch splurge, don't miss it. Quote
Guest taylorsquare Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 Hard to find a place that has real sausages instead of those ghastly little frankfurt things.! I like real english breakfast sausages, unfortanetely LEK has the ghastly frankfurts. Quote
Guest Astrrro Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 I like real english breakfast sausages, There's a place on Soi 5 in Jomtien, named Simple Simons or something like that that has thick sausages instead of little Thai wieners. Think it's all the coffee u can drink though not an all u can eat joint. Quote
Gaybutton Posted September 4, 2009 Author Posted September 4, 2009 Curiosity got the better of me. This morning a friend and I tried the LK Renaissance breakfast. Both of us were greatly pleased. We got there at 7:15am and at that hour we were the only ones there. There was no music or TV, thank God, but the waitresses went right over to the TV to turn it on as soon as we sat down. We asked them to leave it off, which they did until more customers started coming in. The attached selection sheet is a copy of what appears on your table. Again you simply check off what you want (they supply a pen in case you don't have one with you). Everything is served as a single, although if you order eggs you get two of them. But if you order toast, bacon, sausage, or whatever, you get one. If you want more than one, then instead of checking off the space just write in the number of how many you want. If you want two pieces of bacon, write in the number 2 and they'll bring you two. Again, if you want more than what is on your order, all you have to do is fill out another sheet. The toast, by the way, is good quality home made bread and is served with butter and strawberry jam. The waitresses all are very friendly and speak enough English so that there will be no problems. Everything is cooked just right. This is one of the few places where I've gotten eggs cooked properly. The food comes out nice and hot, about 5 minutes waiting time if you order pancakes or French Toast. The bacon is cooked crisp. The sausage is the British style sausage, not those crappy little hot dogs. The pancakes and French toast are good quality and cooked just right. The home fries are hot and crisp. Not a hint of grease anywhere. You do have to order a minimum of one drink. We each had a cup of coffee . . . 40 baht for the coffee, but it's fresh brewed, not instant. The restroom is located in the adjoining hotel. There is an access door between the restaurant and the hotel. The restrooms are absolutely spotless. Both of us were greatly pleased. The food and service couldn't have been better. From now on, when I go out to breakfast, this is where I'm going. And if you're anything like us and get there early, if you drive a car you shouldn't have any problems parking right outside the restaurant. Just remember that if you get there after 8:00am, then the TV is going to be on. I don't know about the music. We left before anyone turned on any music. But if you want a truly quiet breakfast, then get there before 8:00am. Quote
Guest thaiworthy Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 GB, what an excellent review. If I were in town, I'd visit this place, just based on what you said. It sounds wonderful. The concept is good. At last, something that works well in Thailand. Thanks for the thumbs up! Quote
Guest Astrrro Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 I thought the penne in oil and garlic was great! Spaghetti with meat sauce was certainly acceptable given the price. A good all you can eat deal for 129 baht if ordering the cheapest mandatory drink. Bobby, the owner, has owned Italian restaurants in New York so he knows what he's doing. Still a splurge for me at 129 baht since I generally eat at 30 baht food street stalls, but it won't break the bank. I'm by no means a foodie so YMMV (that's "your mileage may vary" for GB ). Quote
Gaybutton Posted October 2, 2009 Author Posted October 2, 2009 A good review of this restaurant appears in this week's PATTAYA MAIL: http://www.pattayamail.com/current/dining.shtml Quote
Gaybutton Posted October 12, 2009 Author Posted October 12, 2009 This morning a friend and I went for the breakfast. While it is still 99 baht, the breakfast is no longer all you can eat. Now it is set menus. The dinners are still all you can eat, but the breakfast policy has changed. Quote
