Question about Bank Deposits at night

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have a boyfriend who has Bangkok Bank. He has no money in the account. I want to give him cash to send to a friend I have in Pattaya who needs 1,000 baht as his bar was raided. The bank closes at 6:00 PM. He tells me that he cannot take the thai baht cash to the bank after a certain time and put in the outside deposit machines and then transfer the money to the boys account. I asked my receptionist the same question. He said the same thing that it was not possible.

Anyone done this? Are they both wrong? My bank account has 69 baht in it and therefore useless. :)

I hesitate to post this because it will not answer your question. It is also a bit assertive and hopefully not too judgmental. I do not know the circumstances of your association with this Thai lad, so please excuse me. With that said, here goes, with my apologies, if necessary.

GT, how are on earth do you get yourself into these things? Why do you have so many needy Thai boys tugging at your shirtsleeve? Do you ever just say "No?" I know you have a compassionate heart and that is why you are posting, but you cannot support the entire Kingdom. Whatever happened to the bf with the motorbike who turned it into a racing machine? After reading that story, and now this one, I cannot help but wonder if your patience and resources are just plain endless. You must be a saint with very deep pockets.

There are two words that can correctly address this issue, you simply say, "No have."

I must say I am sorry if I have offended you. This was not my intention. You lead a very robust and active life and I do care about the decisions you make. I should be so lucky to have experienced half the vibrance in your associations with Thai boys, but I could never rescue as many as you do, nor tolerate their misbehaving quite so easily.

Good luck with this one. I hope by the time you reach my age, you are more conscious of these deeds and know the difference between a foolish farang and a wise one.

well iIdont know what the problem is I went to my local shopping Mall to put 4000 so I can transfer it to a boy who has the card for it, to help pay his rent. at 18.45 yesterday, no problem. he got it 2 minutes after I put it in, I was on the phone as i put it in.

Get a Siam Comercial Bank account you can do it all on line, I am just getting one next week only savings account though, any time of the day or night pay all your bills and top up your phone and transfer money any where in the world.

Good grief! Why all the angst, thaiworthy!? It's only a 1000 baht. And, he didn't say that the person was "tugging at his shirtsleeve". His friend, his wish to help, his 1000 baht. And...only choosing between a "foolish farang and a wise one"?? How about....maybe a "caring" one.

Sounds possible GT I can't even transfer money online at Kasikorn from 10pm- 6am Thailand time.

No offense taken. It was 30 bucks. It was not a lot to me and I didn't mind help him. It is the end of the month and rent is due and tummies are hungry. That is about 4 trips to McDonald's in the states. I just didn't care to send to him. Perhaps that makes me foolish. I can live with that with no worries. But, it will help me to sleep knowing he had food.

I am also not so stupid to know for fact it went for what he said. Again, I can live with being someone laughed as long as I can sleep tonight. Which BTW, I will do with the BF all cuddled up beside me (for about 10 min till I fall asleep). :) Life is good. :)

Yeah, I tested this theory tonight at K Bank and it did not work for me. I'll go tomorrow and ask why.

At 11:40pm this evening I deposited cash into my own account at a Cash Deposit Machine. I've done this many times before, putting cash into my own account as well as others. The Cash Deposit Machines are available 24/7. The money goes into the recipient's account immediately and the funds are available immediately.

OK. I went to 5 Kasikorn banks including the one on Silom Road which is a large branch. Not one of them allowed you to make deposits. I have attached the screen shots for these. It says bank hours are from 6AM - 10PM. The smaller branches I think said earlier times. My bank is K bank.

Went to to 3 branches of Bangkok Bank and none of them took cash deposits either. The one on Silom looked like it might but all their machines had signs up that said they were out of service so we were unable to test this with Bangkok Bank.

So, I can say infinitively that every K bank around Sathorn in Bangkok does NOT allow for cash deposits at night.

Yet another item for my "I Don't Get It" list. I can't imagine why it works just fine in Pattaya at any hour of any day, but in Bangkok you can't do the same thing.

Welcome to Thailand.

OK, here's what I hope will be a full explanantion for you.

All Thailand atms work 24/7 normally. The same applies to cash deposit machines and passbook update machines. However, some machines are not accessible 24/7 as they are inside buildings that close - eg bank branches, shopping malls, etc.

All banks in Thailand are linked by an interbank computer transfer system that is accessible from atms. So using your atm card in one of your banks atms you can transfer up to 30,000baht a pop to any other account in any other thai bank. However, this service only operates between 6am and 9pm. (Not sure about bank holidays or public holidays) During the working hours, transfer is instantaneous.

All however is not lost. If you can find an accessible cash deposit machine of the bank you want to transfer money to, you can make a deposit 24/7 to your friends account simply by keying in his account number. No atm card is needed, no password is needed, all you can do is deposit money (usually only in multiple of 1000 or 500 baht)

Hope this explains things a bit.

I agree and what you wrote is correct if you are transferring money to a different bank. However, my experience is when you are transferring to a different account within the same bank, for example transferring from one Bangkok Bank account to another Bangkok Bank account, the service is available 24/7 and the funds are available instantly. I've done it at 3:00am and it worked just fine, and yes it does work during both bank and public holidays.

However, if for example you want to transfer from a Bangkok Bank account to a Siam Commercial Bank account, then you are correct about the 6:00am to 9:00pm availability. If you make the transfer at 9:00pm, it will go through. If you try it at 9:01, you'll find that you have to wait until 6:00am the next morning.

By the way, the same is true for online banking when it comes to making transfers. That's been my experience anyway.

Sorry if what I wrote was not clear. I did try to make it clear that the 6am to 9pm service was that accessed from atms using your atm card. I do not have experience of interbank transfers using the internet serices of banks, but I am sure what you say is correct as well.

This is not exactly the correct thread for this...but it is banking.

I recall a while back, someone was regretting the need to have to go to your bank branch to convert foreign deposits and transfer into your Baht account. Then GB said it was not much of an ordeal in reality.

Well, I just received an English-language notification from Bangkok Bank in the mail which is headed "Manage multiple currency deposit accounts online via Bualuang iBanking". It advises that if you have online banking with BB and a Baht account and a foreign currency account in any of 13 currencies, you are able to transfer from the foreign accounts to your Baht account(Maximum of Bht500,000/day) online, 24 hours a day(Tansfers requested between 9am and 4pm will be processed immediately...otherwise next morning) and at the published Baht buy rate.

I still don't think it's much of an ordeal, although my post had nothing to do with converting foreign currencies. When you receive money by direct deposit into one of Bangkok Bank's foreign branches, when it reaches your account the conversion has already been done unless you have opened a foreign currency account.

I really don't see the point in keeping your funds in foreign currency unless its value is rising against the exchange rate. It seems pointless to me to keep money in foreign currency if the exchange rate is holding steady or especially if your currency exchange value is dropping against the baht.

Foreign Currency Deposit (FCD) accounts can be expensive - if I recall correctly when a representative of Bangkok Bank was speaking to the Pattaya City Expats Club, there are fees for depositing funds, maintaining the account, and withdrawing funds. I don't recall the amounts, but they seemed rather high to me. Also, no interest paid on the account.

As I understand it, if you have money in a FCD, you can transfer any amount of it out of Thailand - if a Thai Baht account, there are restrictions on the amount that can be transferred outside Thailand. So, the only advantage I can see is if you wanted a large amount available quickly for some contingency or potential purchase, but still wanted to be able to transfer some or all of it out of Thailand.

This is true, especially if you want to make regular transfers to another account within Thailand. All the fees went up hugely a few years back.

I have had a US$ savings account for some years here and never been charged a maintenance fee. Now i keep the balance at $1,000 to avoid charges. I also receive some small interest occasionally. Why do I keep it? I don't really know, but when I bought a condo many moons ago, it was required.

One of the "features" of this new announcement is that if you set up a foreign currency account between now and the end of the year, you will not be charged maintenance fees or deposit fees. But the actual wording mentions "...when opening an account with foreign banknotes valued up to $5,000 or equivalent"

Much as the vagaries of the Thai banking system make interesting reading, it would be fair to say that no two banks, perhaps not even two branches of the same bank, follow the same rules. We have discovered this in the past with numerous posts.

But back to the original post which whilst not being crystal clear as to exactly what was happening, seemed to involve a farang trying to give 1000 baht to a third party, who would then pass it on to some barboy in Pattaya. The whole thing was grinding to a halt because of the impossibility of putting some cash into an account outside of bank hours as various machines wouldnt work.

I suppose the obvious solution is to get whose ever arse is tying to do this into the bank when it is open and do it over the cash desk with a teller.

Slightly less charitably, as the sum involved is so small, isnt there some way of doing this without involving the banks.

Even less charitably, and with even more assumptions on my part, but deducing that we are talking about barboys in pattaya who have been caught up in the raid/underage/peetest saga in the Plaza, it might be best to forget the whole thing. How about telling the barboy to borrow 100 baht and get a coach to BKK and get the 1000 baht plus fare direct from either you or the third party.

Not only is it fair, you're also absolutely right, including the part about different branches of the same bank. I'll bet I'm not the only one around here who has gotten completely different answers from branches of the same bank.

I had a check from a business in the US and went to deposit it into my SCB account on Beach Rd.and was told it could not be done. The bank manager was out and when I asked to talk to whomever was in charge, I was told no one was in charge. Can you believe it? Anyway I was going to Big C and saw the SCB just before there and went in to deposit it. The woman directed me to a desk and in 5 minutes my check was deposited. I was told it would take 45-60 days to clear, but that wasn't a problem. The next time I was in Beach Rd branch I saw the manager in her office and went in to talk to her. When I told her what had happened she asked who told me such a thing. I told her I didn't want to get anyone in trouble and that my intention of talking to her was so she would inform her staff of procedures. She picked up the phone. I could tell by her demeanor she was furious. A guy (apparently who was supposed to be in charge while she was out) came in and they talked and after that the guy led me to his desk and told me of promotions and practically kissed my ass. I declined the promotions and the kissing. He wasn't my type.

GB, you forgot to mention you also can get different replies from different people at the same branch. You can also get different answers from the same person at the same branch and the same day...but usually not at the same time.
